He might want to check out how the transfer is working out for Stephenson and Holmes. He will fizzle somewhere where they don’t put 30,000 people in the stands. At least he will be getting his degree just not sure how transfers do trying to use the ND network when it comes time to
Get a job. Sadly ND transfers move and fall off the face of the earth. Brandon who?

No need to go at Brandon like that, man.

My apologies and wish BW stayed. Didn’t think he got a fair shot. Coach decided to abandon a true duke threat QB. I would give BW a job just for his beat down if USC in 2017. I was thinking of the R who sent to Purdue for 5 minutes.

It is kind of funny that this was apparently brought up post-USC. Well, hold on to the damn ball and you got yourself a TD. That's just on him.

I think he got the "Kelly treatment" after he dropped the ball on what was a clear TD and then had a pass go "clank" shortly after in a critical situation. I think he didn't appreciate the learning opportunity.

Holmes is at Penn State.
Also weren’t both of those guys kicked out? Stepherson certainly was.
I agree most outbound transfers don’t really wind up in a better place. Especially when it’s b/c a guy got passed on the depth chart. I did see Micah Dew Treadway is starting at (undefeated) Minnesota though. So good for him.
Holmes is a walk on and now playing safety I believe (did I just make that up?). Well, I wouldn't say "playing"...

Now that Long is leaving and there seems to have been an issue with Long and the players, is there any chance he returns? I couldn't remember if he settled on a new school, or was just entering the portal. Also, did he leave school, and therefore would not have the academic standing to come back?

I don't think Young has landed anywhere yet (or maybe even left ND if he's graduating this semester). But I suspect, like 26 there said, his quitting the team mid-season wouldn't be easily forgiven, even if Long was as big a dick as people say.

Could be wrong but if this were Michael Floyd and not Michael Young I bet some folks would be singing a different tune.

Not a chance. I didn't like all of my coaches but you suck it up for your boys and persevere together.

He quit. During prep for a rivalry game nonetheless.

Do we even have confirmation that Chip the was the reason he left? Or is this just hypothetical talk? Very well could have been very different reasons...home sick, course work, depth chart, etc

Astute observations. Have to wonder if this didn't contribute to the loss as a distraction.

Assuming the coaches wanted him back, I could see this being one of those things put up to a locker room vote.

At the time, Prister made it sound like Lenzy passed him on the depth chart. But a recent Indy Star article suggested that Chip Long wouldn’t play guys that ran out of bounds/didn’t initiate contact. You’ve got to think that didn’t play well with a guy like Michael Young who just lost half a season to injury.

Yeah, it was basically Chip Long // his overall role in the offense // the offense in general being a flaming pile of dog crap.

In Young's defense, if Long was coming back next year ND might have a Stanford-esque situation on their hands with a mass exodus of players eligible for transfer. But quitting on the eve of Michigan when playing in the game wouldn't have affected his eligibility is a little tough to get past. Hope he succeeds at his next destination, he's a talented player.

I wonder how teammates view these sort of things. In my mind, he did for self and bailed on his team, but then again, in the race for NFL possibility, I wonder how strong the mutual understanding is between players when athletes make moves for their career.

From my very limited knowledge on this subject, it seems like most of the transfers stay friends with the rest of the team after they transfer. Although none did it mid-season like Young. But he also had to be able to sit to keep his redshirt and from what we have been told he was not going to be granted that opportunity.

So did he chose to take the $50K in education and not fulfill his responsibility as he was able to play but chose not to?

circa re-posted a 6 year post about how another student athlete handled being passed on the depth chart, losing his starter's job ... and did it with class.

Rees: I'm A Notre Dame Guy
By Angelo Di Carlo | Posted: Sun 10:28 PM, Jan 13, 2013 | Updated: Tue 2:26 PM, Jan 15, 2013

Tommy Rees says he's staying at Notre Dame.

The starter to close out 2010 and 2011, Rees became the backup quarterback to rookie Everett Golson in 2012. And even if he remains a backup next year, Rees has no intentions of leaving.

"I came to Notre Dame--committed here for four years to graduate," Rees told me moments after the Irish lost to Alabama in the national title game. "Whatever my role is on this team next year, I'm happy with it. Obviously, as a competitor you want to be the guy on the field. But quarterback is such a competitive position."

"I'm going to keep getting better, keep competing but I'm a Notre Dame guy."

Rees did not play in the season opener against Navy due to a suspension from a May arrest. He came in for the final two minutes of the Purdue game in week two to help the Irish engineer a game winning field goal. In week four, Rees replaced a struggling Golson midway through the 2nd quarter and led the Irish to victory--scoring the game's only touchdown.

Rees started the following week against Miami after Golson was late to a team meeting but Golson replaced Rees after just three plays and Everett remained in the game the rest of the way.

Rees was again called upon in the thriller against Stanford when Golson was knocked out of the game due to a concussion. Rees threw the go ahead touchdown in the OT win. Rees then started a week later against BYU with Golson still out because of the concussion. Tommy led ND to victory in the game.

When Golson struggled against Pittsburgh, Rees again came in the game to replace him--but Rees struggled as well. Golson returned and never lost the job again the rest of the season.

Rees easily could have caused issues within the locker room at times during the season--but never did. In fact--after Notre Dame's loss to Alabama in the national title game--no one was a bigger supporter of Golson than Rees.

"I thought Everett played a great game," Rees said. "Given the circumstances of getting down early--he fought for four quarters. He showed character and grit out there, taking hits and finding a way to move the ball. That's definitely a positive moving forward for him and for this team. I'm excited for the future."

don't understand your question and if your recent post is saying he quit bc he was passed on the depth chart, that is not what I heard so I'm not going to assume that is why he transferred

My understanding - reported somewhere that I can't recall - was that he stopped playing when he did in order to preserve a year of eligibility and grad transfer with two years remaining to play. Though apparently the Michigan game would have been his fourth game, so not sure why he did it before that game and not after.
Regardless, Michael Young played two and a half years for our football team, through various injuries, and will graduate this month from the University of Notre Dame. I'm not going to begrudge the guy his scholarship.

Thanks. I think it’s easy to underestimate the mutual understanding that college athletes have on the business aspects of collegiate sports. We can criticize his decision and stress the importance of a ND degree and brotherhood, but at the end of the day, they are still young people chasing a dream. I imagine it’s difficult to navigate the pressures and ambitions of wanting to make it to the next level. Anyway, no reason for us to be upset about anyone trying to figure out this life thing, right?
