I mean, I kinda hate the passing offense, too, and my fat ass is on the couch.

I definitely think we’ll miss his leadership next year but at the same time we’ll have the depth to sustain his loss, that’s if Austin does come back. Having your top 4 wr’s being Lenzy Keys Austin and JJ with solid depth with Wilkins, Watts and Brunelle is pretty good still.

If he's never liked Long's O, and splits mid season, not sure his leadership is really something we'll miss. Von could be back, right? And Keys, Wilkins, Lenzy, and Austin will all be Juniors. It's even more reason IMO to get one (or more) of them (Lenzy/Keys/Wilkins) solidly in the mix going forward.

In his defense though, I'm not overly impressed with Long's passing game either.

So next year the two deep rotation could consist of JJ, Von, Keys, Lenzy, Wilkins, and perhaps Austin in some form or another. Give me Lenzy/Keys at slot, JJ/Wilkins at one outside position, and Austin/Von at the other. I'd be very happy with that.

Sounds like Lenzy just passed up Young, which is the basis of the transfer. So that's two starters to replace, one of which is Finke. Plus Kevin Austin and Jordan Johnson should be available next year. Not as bad as it seems.

Now if Kmet goes early, that would be a blow.

There's a lot of raw talent here. Tight end will be fine, especially if Kmet returns in 2020, and I'm really excited to see what Braden Lenzy brings to the table in the latter half of this season.

It'll be interesting to see who emerges on the outside, as NO ONE has provided any sort of production there besides Claypool. Hopefully one of the current sophomores makes that leap. Javon McKinley is intriguing, too, but he has been completely invisible against P5 competition this year.

I just don't get it. If you want to get to the NFL but can't get playing time at a school like ND, its not going to work out very well for you anyway. Work hard in practice, get better, make the most of your opportunities. Maybe its more of not trusting Book is a guy that can consistently get him the ball. Or Long's offense sucks. Whatever it is the timing is terrible.

The only way this guy is getting to the NFL is if he buys a ticket to a game.

Crazy inflated perception of his skill clearly

IMO, Kmet will likely rise on the draft boards if he continues to be a key target. Really hope he returns. He's only played 4 games and is our 2nd leading receiver....

Timing is driven by the redshirt rule. Unintended consequences. Guys quitting teams midseason couldn't possibly be what they had in mind when they made this rule.

Funny thing is he was touted as a recruit for his blocking which was exceptional for a wide out.Is the thing he doesn't like about our offense too much blocking?

Tough situation. I do think the offense needs to rotate more. I could understand that frustration. I also think this is what happens when you have a competitive roster because younger players might pass you up. It wouldn't surprise me if Lenzy and Keys have shown, when healthy, they deserve more reps. Don't like the timing of it. Also, don't like blaming Long, that seems weak.

I hope it means he heard Austin is going to be activated against Michigan.

Agree on the red shirt rules.... I really like the 4 game rule, but I think they need to reign in the transfers a bit. I'm fairly liberal on the issue, I just think there should be limited windows. I'd let kids go where ever they want after 2 years (not before), and after 4 years (if they have a RS) or graduation (regardless if it's after true junior or senior year). Commit to a team, OK, you're locked for 2 years. Stay at the two year point, you're locked in for another 2 or until graduation.

I'd prefer kids be able to move up to bigger schools if they have legit talent, and move down to smaller schools for playing time. I just don't want pure chaos. I think it's great we have 2 Bama QBs (original) now in the top 10, 2 Clemson QBs, as well as 3 UGA QBs (two in the top 10) playing on good teams. If transfers didn't happen, only 3 of 7 would be playing... That's just a waste of the other 4.

Agree the transfer rule is the problem not the redshirt rule. Anyone (with the right legal advice) can transfer and play immediately the next year. This is free agency. I hate it. There should be more parameters and limitations as you suggest.

Wild west type stuff. Just need a few hard and fast limitations.

The only exception I might give to limitations I mentioned would be if a HC leaves. I know a kid is supposed to commit to a "school" but it's just not reality. And I'm really tired of all the sick grandmothers that end up with a kid transferring to a school that's still hundreds of miles from their grandmother...

It is kind of funny that this was apparently brought up post-USC. Well, hold on to the damn ball and you got yourself a TD. That's just on him.

One wonders if that’s the last straw: Lenzy getting the start at WR and Keys getting the KR duties now that he is back.

I doubt it's accurate.

If it is though, it's absolutely weak. If he hated the offense, he had 2 1/2 years to make the decision to walk.

I'd say it's far more likely that he saw the younger guys were garnering more reps and his role was being diminished. Younger guys with higher ceilings than him. He knew that he was running out of time and playing a limited role and wasting a year of eligibility does him no good, only to see him likely playing an even smaller role next year, possibly not starting.

Seems more like he has less an issue with the offense's structure, and more with his role within it being smaller than he probably anticipated.

I hate the timing of it, but I think that's what is the case and I can't necessarily blame him for thinking that way. Also don't blame Long for wanting to utilize Lenzy and/or Keys more. If they are showing more promise, you have to try and get your playmakers in position to make plays.

Something smells here. I know the transfer rules have changed things, but this is extremely fishy.

Well, there have only been 67 receptions by receivers through 6 games. That’s only 6.5 per game to not-Claypool. It’s not a lot to go around if you’re in a positional rotation.

He might want to check out how the transfer is working out for Stephenson and Holmes. He will fizzle somewhere where they don’t put 30,000 people in the stands. At least he will be getting his degree just not sure how transfers do trying to use the ND network when it comes time to
Get a job. Sadly ND transfers move and fall off the face of the earth. Brandon who?

On the other hand, there's Jalen Guyton, who had a solid career at North Texas and is now making money on an NFL practice squad. Young should go that route and transfer to a school that will give him the production to attract NFL attention.

Holmes is at Penn State.
Also weren’t both of those guys kicked out? Stepherson certainly was.
I agree most outbound transfers don’t really wind up in a better place. Especially when it’s b/c a guy got passed on the depth chart. I did see Micah Dew Treadway is starting at (undefeated) Minnesota though. So good for him.
