If we have a single DL with 10+ sacks after the showing last year, BVG should pay Notre Dame $2M in damages.

ND would've made way more than that if they had a real DC in 2015 assuming a more competent D would've propelled them into the playoffs.

And last year doesn't completely fall apart if we had even an average defense in place to start the season.

DL Daelin Hayes, Notre Dame: A sophomore, Hayes was a spring game star for the Irish. Notre Dame had one of the worst pass rushing units last season with just 14 sacks, and a lack of domination in the trenches was a big reason for the 4-8 record. There's a lot to prove for this defensive front, meaning Hayes has an opportunity to steal the spotlight this fall as a disruptive edge rusher.

Will never be big enough to play DE, or so I read someplace long ago.

Baller. That one play where he weaves through traffic from one side of the line and makes the tackle at the line of scrimmage on the other side was a work of art.

Very impressed by his play today. Literally all over the place and disruptive all game. Loved seeing him hurdle a couple of players to apply pressure in the backfield. He is fun to watch and is athletic as hell.

He is the kind of edge rusher, under coverage drop guy with legit size ND has missed for far too long. I mean he is a crazy athlete and if he's a legit 250+ lbs as the roster shows, my goodness. His athleticism lets ND bring pressure from anywhere. With his tools this defense can be very dynamic and versatile from coverage and pressure standpoints.

Haven't seen anything but he was back on the field after that play. And he seemed in good spirits in the locker room. So I don't think it was too serious.

Yep. My initial reaction was, "Oh shit, that's a shoulder." But then I was thinking maybe he just got the wind knocked out of him. The fact that he was back out there afterwards is good and likelihood is that he was kept out beyond that because game was in hand and the 2s and 3s were getting some burn.

Yep, I quietly freaked out while watching the game.

Not sure if true, but I heard after the game that a Michigan State player eye gouged him after he jumped on the football and that was the injury.

Looking at the replay again, it does look possible from the one angle that he got poked. The MSU lineman that was going for the ball did have his hand up around/under the facemask of Hayes for a brief second. Don't think it was intentional, but I'm guessing that was indeed the injury.

Really tough to tell from the replay angles but the "live" shot looks like the OLs hand goes up to the face mask slightly and Hayes reacts instantly by putting his head onto the ground. It's weird that the ref didn't see the act since he was literally standing right over him. Tough telling either way. I thought he landed on top of the ball and got the wind knocked out of him, IMO.

Actually the problem was he got hit a little lower than the stomach...if you know what I mean. He is fine and has been practicing all week.

So Piombino got it right back in post 1904 ... "he just got 'the wind' knocked out of him"

He going to be an SDE his senior year?

I think Kareem's got that covered. Though it would be nice if Okwara continued to develop and earned more snaps. Maybe then Okwara and Hayes could line up at end together in certain situations. (Maybe they have already, I'm not sure about that?) Julian seems to create more chaos per snap than the other DE's, at least to my eye.

One thing I'm concerned with re: Okwara is that he's apparently now 230. I don't get this. Okwara's biggest issue was a lack of size in terms of weight, yet over the offseason he LOST 10 pounds, not gained.

DROPs can be in the 230 range, but generally those are guys like Vic Beasley, who are only about 6'2. Julian is almost 6'5. It'd be great if he could pack on some muscle. I'm not for him gaining weight for the sake of gaining weight, but 230 for a 6'5 end is really slight.

This should be Hayes year to make a big leap. Should be stronger, smarter, faster with second year in this defense.

I'm going to assume the staff knows what they're doing with his weight, based on how closely they monitor and track progress during winter conditioning.

Perhaps they want him to be a pure edge specialist for now, meaning he stays lean and attacks the edge all game long on every third down, and they feel he won't have the necessary explosiveness if he puts on more weight.
