He was in on at least a couple of defensive possessions. The first one I remember seeing him on, he dropped back.

I was in the south end zone and I remember watching him rush the QB on the series where we almost had a safety. He got double teamed and still moved both of them backwards and then broke off the block. I was impressed.

Was away. Now returned.

Yeah. Saw him out there a number of times. Didn't make any big plays but didn't look like a liability, either.

I agree with this, part of the reason I wanna see a 3-4 alignment more. NG would be tough but Cage, Taylor, and Mokwuah should suffice. Hayes, Coney, Morgan, Bilal would be a pretty sick LB corps.

I too woul like this with Martini also in the mix but if something happened to Cage, I'd be pretty nervous unless Ewell came in ready to play at NG as a True Freshman (doubtful)

That's a nice blend athleticism, speed and power

Martini would def be in the mix and probably split reps with Bilal and or Coney.

But that starting 4 LB's would probably be the best group I have ever seen at Notre Dame and I've been a fan since 1993.

Come to think of it I've been a fan since 1993, the last great year for Holtz. Maybe I have cursed the school...

NG is the keystone of that alignment. Having guys that would be average probably would not bode well. And ND hasn't had a ton of luck recruiting stud NG type guys in the past.

The discussion about the importance of having a dominant NT has been talked about in another thread. To summaries, it is just not true. You can have a serviceable NT and still have a salty defense.

And we can sit back and watch our secondary subsequently go from terrible to good.

Yes. NT has to be able to occupy C and G. If not, your ILBs get rocked and they run all up in your grill.

Why couldn't you get a way with a few good NT? Why does it have to be a dominant all American?

I think NT is very important for the 3-4 and if you look at the 2017 schedule we have to be able to stop the run. Our first for games are going to be a slugfest. I do include BC they get up to play us.

So a combination of Cage, Pete M and Elijah Taylor won't cut it at NT next year to run a 3-4 I'm understanding from you and everyone else. We need better NT like Nix correct? I'm asking because that's what you all seem to be saying.

I, too, was being pessimistic. I hear you though. With the D roster we have at LB and DB, lets roll a 3-4 base??? I think it's a viable option. You don't need Haloti Ngata or Suh or Wilfork. I miss Diaco and his D.

I agree with most of what you said. I wouldn't say I miss Diaco and defense completely though.

Diaco is destroying my alma mater, not like it's hard to do, but we did beat Notre Dame in SouthBend on senior day! Thank you Coach Weis!

Yeah, it wasn't so much Diaco as it was Kap, Tuitt, Nix, Teo etc etc etc. just a good 34 DC would make it all happen and happen well. Respect, dude.

Some of you are closer to the team than I.

We clearly have an issue putting edge pressure on QB. Why is this guy not playing very much? Why can't he come in for the "NASCAR" package ala Kolin Hill 2014.

Oh Kolin Hill how he probably wishes he went to Colorado with his brother.

6 college football players who will benefit from a new coordinator

Mike Elko, DC, Notre Dame – DE Daelin Hayes

Notre Dame was a mess last season defensively and one of the areas that was most glaring in its dysfunction was the pass rush. The 2016 Fighting Irish defense delivered 14 sacks and LB Nyles Morgan led the meager charge with four. Mike Elko arrives after helping his Wake Forest defense post 41 sacks last season, 10.5 of which came from defensive lineman Duke Ejiofor.

Hayes is the best pass-rusher on the Notre Dame roster and he showcased that in the spring game with 3 sacks and 7 tackles. Elko is a master at attacking protections and putting his defenders in a position to get to the quarterback and Hayes is coming of age at exactly the right time. Physically Hayes and Ejiofor have a lot of similarities so don't be surprised when they have similar production next fall.
