Max's biggest accomplishment is that he's in a battle for biggest bust (most overrated recruit) of the Kelly era, with Ishaq Williams, and maybe Gunner Kiel and Aaron Lynch, if you look at just what they did while at ND.

Its funny to consider that our football team, last year, would've been better off, having recruited 2 3 star S's, instead of Max during the 2013 cycle.

Good for him to get his degree, but he provided very little for the football program.

What this football team needs, is substantially less, Max Redfields of the world.

Was he a bust? I would say so but athletically gifted he was a freak. If you look back who really did succeed and improve their game in a BVG lead defense? Maybe Farley and Sheldon Day? Jaylon was to much of a freak to fail in any defense but BVG didn't make anyone better and no one really upped their game in his defense. he wasn't the 5* everyone thought he was going to be. I would have loved to see a Max Redfield with a less course load playing in Mike Elko's defense. I understand why people are hard on Max but I wouldn't put him in the same class as Lynch who was a boss when he played just immaturity, Gunner Kiel I wouldn't call him a bust because he didn't play and had personal issues and Ishaq, yes he is a bust.

ND needs to recruit five star players who are freak athletes and have a bit of a edge to them, especially on defense because it's just what we have to do in order to be one of the top teams year in and year out. ND just needs to do a better job managing them and putting them in better situations to succeed. But Max was clearly immature and made some dumb ass decisions like most college kids but I think his teammates generally liked him and he got along with them so if you wanna call him a bust I can't really argue in terms of off the field but on the field he didn't live up to his 5* billing for sure, but I don't think like many he was but in the best situation to succeed which is on him and the coaching staff.

I know I'm probably alone here and no one will agree with me but that's just my thoughts. I love all of you and Max

Yea, pretty big bust, he was a 5 star S, and #41st rated player in the country (per composite), who will end his career with, only two seasons of average productivity. He had 143 tkls, 2 INT's, 2.5 TFL's. In 3 seasons.

For comparison sake, Harrison Smith had 180 tackles, 3.5 TFL's, and 7 INT's in his last two years. For his career he had 307 tkls. Composite has him at #229.

In all honesty, its more about the time he missed because he's a knucklehead, than his god given talent. But why do I care about his god given talent. For this conversation, I care about what he produced for ND, and what he did, wasn't very much. Lastly, if we had even a half way decent S behind him, he wouldn't have had those numbers, because he'd be on the bench. He just really isn't a very good football player. Had moments, but moments don't win games.

I can't really disagree with what you said. My point was he wasn't put in the best situation to succeed like many on this defense over the last two years and he clearly didn't put himself in a position to succeed as well. Was he a good football player? No, did he flash and make some plays where some guys can't? Yes, he is clearly disappointing but again a lot of it was on him and some of it was on other things as well. Just saying I would love to see him in Elkos defense with a less course load so he could actually focus on football. That's IF Max wanted to focus on football which was clearly a question over the three and a half years he was here.

UPDATE: Redfield speaks publicly for first time about arrest
By Shaun Gallagher | Posted: Tue 5:55 PM, Mar 21, 2017 | Updated: Tue 6:28 PM, Mar 21, 2017

...

In an official statement, Defense Attorney Randy Fisher says Redfield will serve one year probation and is required to submit a standard substance abuse evaluation. He already checked himself into a rehab program in his home state, California, back in January.

...

"Mr. Redfield will continue to volunteer his time regularly to charitable organizations and mentor middle and high school students on the importance of higher education and living a responsible lifestyle," Fisher said.

"The two classes I'm taking right now will finish my Bachelor's degree and will give me the opportunity to be a graduate transfer," Redfield said. "But if Notre Dame doesn't honor that, honor my degree, I can't be a graduate transfer so I can't even compete for scholarship programs this next season. It's a sticky situation and I'm waiting on Notre Dame to see what they do."

...

ND obviously can't comment publicly on the academic progress because of federal law. Redfield apparently has credits earned elsewhere that he is trying to transfer to his ND transcript which would qualify him to graduate on his timetable if accepted.

I'm curious why if Redfield academically eligible, and claims to be in the best shape of his career he would not fight to play for ND. Does he feel he was thrown under the bus by the Adminstration and/Kelly for an offense he thinks he isn't "much of a substance abuse problem" but "more of a decision making deficiency"? He could have been expelled.

I though he was supposed to be a successful student yet did ND Graduate school not stamp their imprimatur on a position of definite need? Is it character and not academics ... or both?

Redfield hasn't been shy about his criticisms of the coaching staff, and how he thought it was unfair that they didn't want him taking such a heavy course load while also honoring his football commitments.

If this were a student that had proven they could handle it, like a Steve Elmer, then I could see why the staff discouraging extra academic effort would be a legitimate gripe. But I get the feeling that the staff KNEW that Redfield couldn't handle football, a ridiculous course load, AND his social life, and were trying to get him to ease on his academics as a result to reign in the balance.

Obviously, Redfield was his own downfall, and is paying the price for multiple bone-headed transgressions. Based on his comments and his reluctance to take responsibility for his actions (even when he is "taking responsibility"), he probably feels as if he was unfairly targeted in his punishment, even though the other guys were first-time offenders.

I bet he 100% feels he was thrown under the bus, despite his public admissions of guilt/responsibility, and has no desire to fight for a spot back on the roster or in the school. If I'm reading his character right based on his passive-aggressive quotes towards the coaches and his general attitude, I bet he'd rather go get "revenge" by playing well for someone else.

I also doubt Kelly would have him back, for various reasons in addition to the simple fact that Redfield got his "three strikes."

Probably best for all involved that he not return to Notre Dame's football program. But if Redfield is really that close to his degree and has transferable credits, ND should probably take the high road here, let him graduate and move on to play somewhere else next year.

could not agree more. Imagine a few years down the road, marijuana legalized, ESPN, recalling a mean spirited ND not letting a "good" student only a few credit hours short of a degree graduate because of weed.

Yea...I mean if what he is transferring in are gen eds, or on the fringe of his core degree...who cares. I can see a department head having a tough time if he tried to transfer a core degree course in, and maybe force him to change his major...but I don't think Max Graduating from ND is a bridge too far...and is indeed the best thing for all...because the last impact we need is for his conduct to hit ND on the Grad rate numbers...wouldn't that just be the cherry.

I transferred to ND (many on the board know this) and as a transfer student you literally have to move heaven and earth to get classes to transfer. The transfer department literally reviews course descriptions and syllabi to make sure a class to be transferred is a close substitute for one at ND. It's a hellish process - but it's designed to keep students from transferring in with 1) backgrounds that won't allow them to succeed and 2) without the ability to graduate in 4 years total.

And this is for 1st year classes, not for 300 and 400 level electives which do not often have proxies at other schools. I don't see why he should be able to transfer those credits.

SEC football factories would let that happen. Most self-respecting universities wouldn't let that happen. And in this case, I all but guarantee that the department head of his major will make that call.

For the record this is a pretty standard process...

For the record, it's still a bitch.

Good to know though. My point still stands that he's going to be at the mercy of a department head who probably gives zero shits about foozball.

Though perhaps he knows Max as a football (or foozball?) player who cares about school and is inclined to be sympathetic. At this point it's not about getting him eligible to play for Notre Dame, but rather to get a kid over the last hump to graduate. Who knows.

I think there is a serious disconnect in that kid's thought-process somewhere.

He reminds me of Kanye West, in that he's obviously intelligent and talented, but the outlet is often inappropriate, ill-conceived, or just kind of crazy. It's like he's aware of what he should filter... but he doesn't filter it.

The difference being, of course, that Kanye has HAD success. Max is still working on it.

Article is a couple weeks old by now, but a few interesting tidbits:

“I couldn’t be more excited,” Redfield said. “It’s an incredible feeling to be somewhere where I feel comfortable, where I can trust the coaches I’m playing for. This is an environment I’m comfortable in.”

He then plans to seek readmission to Notre Dame so that he can receive his degree.

Trust the coaches???

I guess all the offenses committed weren't his fault. I wonder which coach forced the pot and gun on him.

Hopefully it's one of the coaches no longer around.

I don't fault Max for failing to live up to his 5 star recruiting level. Kids don't set their own recruiting level, scouts do, and they're often wrong. I do fault him for his numerous legal mistakes and rule breaking during his time at ND. Blaming coaches for his problems and the media for "distorting his image" is hogwash. He needs to accept his mistakes and learn from them, assigning blame shows a lack of maturity and the reason he probably hurt his chances at the Draft. I'd wish him luck this week...but it sounds like IUP is playing my old hometown Ashland this week...can't really root for him Saturday  I wish him well the rest of the season though.
