6th year would be nice but odds are he isn't healthy next year either.

Exactly!

From my perspective, every scholarship counts for a growing great class of sixteen. I am not sure I want to spend even one on a guy that probably doesn't have starter level talent, and hasn't played a complete year of college football. He seems like a great guy, but the decision here seems easy.

I am ok with giving him one more year. We will be young on the backside after this year. All of our game experience is leaving (most likely). It will be nice to have a veteran with game experience on the field. Especially if we have a spot available. I would give it to him over some of our 5th year options next year.

When we have 85 scholarships to start the season...at some point...ever...then I might agree with you. Until that time, you're right, the decision here seems easy.

Why would anyone not jump on having him on board next year...? I'm all for it assuming it's too late to get him up to speed for the home stretch this year.

BK loves his veterans. If there is a spot open, he tends to want to fill it with veterans. Have we not seen this with several position battles? The underclassmen have to be special to play over veterans. I don't think we have those kids in the backfield yet.

id say try get him back next year and have a go at training camp, if he does not make it stick him on a medical scholly ala Deeb and Heuerman this year

I disagree. We are going to have the room to take him anyways . We always are under 85 scholarships. What's the harm in taking a veteran who has playing experience, if not just for depth purposes. Depth can get thin real quick and having a guy with experience could be really beneficial.

If safety wasn't our position with the least depth it's be different but we really need experienced bodies there for 2016

I agree with Bogs. I definitely wouldn't go into the signing date holding a spot for Sebastian. I would take commitments assuming he will not return. If a spot opens up because we don't get up to 85 players (Due to transfers, medicals or we don't sign as many kids as we anticipated) then I wouldn't be opposed to bringing him back. But this kid cannot stay healthy.

If we are in the hunt for the playoff this year and BK thinks he can help the team, I would play him in a heartbeat.

This is the way to go if ND can legally. With Sebastian's understanding. If the conversation can go like. You don't have a great health track record. First sign of problems, for your long term well being, we are going to pull the plug.

Again I don't know whether or how this can be done legally.

Nobody knows that yet! Like the old philosopher said, "Just because you throw the same rock in the air 9999 times and it returns to your hand every time, doesn't mean you can assume it will the 10,000th!"

Granted it has never been close to a problem before. But this year came a lot closer than ever! If things had been just a little different (B+, signee making it past admission, a freshman not being homesick, or an appeal reversal) we may have been in a bind.

Recruiting is becoming its own lean mean animal :
  • More organized, and unified attack by the staff;
  • Additional success to point out to recruits;
  • Marketing, especially in three words - Showtime, Showtime, Showtime;
  • More rational approach to rating recruits on the board, (less personal preference);
  • Staff casting a wider net;
  • Earlier connections, and better long-term relationships built (à, la Harry Hiestand);
  • CJ Prosise, Will Fuller, DeShone Kizer, Jaylon Smith, Jerry Tillery, KeiVarae Russel - these are guys whose stories capture recruits imaginations, and recruits want to emulate;
  • And ND is starting to look like a perennial ten-win team.

Finally, with recruiting over the last three or four seasons, the tendency has been that our young recruits, even the ones that take a first year to orient, (White, Williams, etc.) are going to play at a higher level than those they replace. AND, I have it in my gut that there is at least one (more) offensive player that will convert to defense to see the field. Think 'Farley-esque', or 'Onwualu-like', which isn't a bad thing. Everyone know how Mathias can be counted for, for the big play, and look at how highly (close behind Jaylon) James is rated at linebacker!

I think all of this mechanism has to be exhausted before we automatically offer an invite to the party, for someone we don't know can dance!

That's all well and good. But even this year we were over 85 on Signing Day and under 85 on Opening Day. There's always attrition. Given that and our lack of depth next year at safety, why not offer Avery a chance to come back? We could use him. And he's probably not making the NFL next year at this point. What's the harm?

BK just said they're going to preserve his year unless the absolutely need him. Huge news for next year.

I'd say it's mildly larger than average news. Sebastian wasn't slated to be a starter this year and we haven't fielded world beaters. I guess he may be able to take Schumate's spot if necessary but if I remember correctly, most weren't impressed with his speed so he's definitely a "near the LOS" type player.

I think ND has to do some work to prove he couldn't have played this year in order to get a 6th year. You can't hold a guy out that is able to play just to preserve a year. BK's comments about holding him out unless they need him concern me in this regard.

I want Avery back, especially since he's at a position in need, but how does he get an extra year and Grace does not?

Would love to see him come back and be a great special teams player which he has always been and provide some safety depth. Nothing but positives in bringing him back

Grace was hurt in the 6th game of the 2013 season so that season doesn't count. He only missed one year (2014) due to injury and you need to miss two in order to be eligible for a 6th year.

I think Case Keenum got a 6th year after playing 4 games of a season. Given that Grace didn't play in 2011, and was out for all of '14 and half of '13, he's really only had 2 1/2 years of playing time. Seems like a good reason to give someone a 6th year if you ask me.

Keenum was hurt in the 3rd game of the season. If he finishes that game and gets hurt the next week, he doesn't get a 6th year as the rule is 3 games. Rules are rules. As much as I'd like to have Grace back, he doesn't qualify under the current 6th year rules.

My hopes are that Sebastian gives ND "intelligent solid leadership" on the back end of the defense which we didn't have all this year. Assumptions are based upon him being a starter at a major program. If young guns don't make big football/IQ jumps, I'd not be opposed to seeing him start. ... in fact, that would be a blessing.
