Already my favorite (the day he signed). But yes, this guy is going to be very popular if his talk and his walk materialize this year. Kid has confidence, but also gets it (at least it appears he does). Huge expectations for him. I also think Nico surprises a ton of people in the next couple of years. Might only be a ST's stud, but think his attitude and work ethic will also make a lot of fans happy.

I would not be worried about his weight, he has a very good frame to add muscle and his game's strong suit is when the ball is in the air and you have to catch the ball and be a playmaker just like Eifert, who came to ND at 215 lbs and was never a very physical guy.

It's weird because Luatua seems like he'll be the best blocking TE, Jones will probably be the best pass catcher... so the only way Smythe plays seems to be if he's so well-rounded that it's more valuable than a single superior trait.

Or, in a run heavy offense, we go 2 TE quite often similar to 2012.

I do believe he'll have offensive snaps against Texas but I highly doubt he's starting in all capacities for the first few weeks. Though I believe he is getting much stronger, I don't believe he'll provide the same stability that Durham Smythe will have as the in-line TE. Ex. Luatua last year, much more of a blockers body type, had trouble in the blocking game throughout the year. Its much more than what weight they are at and how strong they are. Technique and assignments is a big part of blocking.

I think we will eventually (maybe not even until much later) see heavy zone read with two tight end sets. Once we are heavily using that style, it will be Luatua/Alize, until then we will see more of Smythe/Luatua rotating in single TE sets (with two TE sets sprinkled in).

With MZ running the show, I think we see him earlier than most people think. I think he plays a little against TX, a little more vs UVA, a little less via GT, a bunch against UMASS. If he's producing, I think he's starting by then. I think he's polished enough catching the ball that he a) can devote most of his energy to learning the blocking schemes, and b) will be used a lot in 2 TE sets or as another WR. IMO if he's one of the best 11, he'll find the field.

I'll agree with the premise that we will probably go more 2 TE sets this year but I'll disagree quite a bit that it will be Luatua and Alize towards the end of the year. Though Luatua would seem to be the best blocking TE based on body type, he was very inconsistent last year and even fairly poor at times.

Right now the TE depth chart is Smythe, Smythe, and Smythe with Alize working onto the field in certain packages. Could this change, of course and I expect it to but not to where Smythe isn't even playing. Mind you this was our coaches words at the end of spring.

I didn't mean my comment to mean this year, hence the "eventually (maybe not even until much later)" note. I just mean that the progression will probably be:

Smythe>>>>Smythe/Luatua>>>>Smythe/Luatua>>>>Smythe/Luatua/Alize>>>Luatua/Alize

I see. I think Smythe's career at ND will be overshadowed by Alize's but still successful as I think he's good enough to get on the field. Especially with Zaire as QB and a more run focused scheme, hopefully.

I'll bet Smythe starts most of the year if not all of it. I HOPE that Coach goes [as he usually likes to do] with regular "elephant receiver sets" [i.e. putting height all over the place] and Alize is that guy who comes in as the match-up nightmare.

I can confirm with my own eyes that my post about Alize Jones last week was correct. Yeesh. That kid has been bulking up big time from high school. Looks like a college upperclassman

That means that literally all sites that went to view II commented on Alize and how jacked he looks. I find that awesome. They are there for something completely different but he looks that great physically they all notice it. My hype machine is ready to go.

Koon is just drooling and ND fans will go crazy over shirtless guys making one hand catches. But it's the offseason so let's roll

Wish Alize would make a video of him pushing a blocking sled for a change instead of one handed catches all the time ;)

On a serious note, the video was kind of grainy, so I couldn't recognize everyone. I could tell ESB (he looked like he had Velcro hands, just casually picking the ball out of the air, btw), who else is in that video?

Jalen Guyton was in at the end. CJ Sanders was at the beginning.
