they arn't your friends then

my wife got us tickets for an Octoberfest which she thought i would love...i said the games at 330pm better find a friend to take...

My fiance likes to test me during football season... she'll think of stuff to do right in the middle of Saturday afternoon, and ask me if we can do it, knowing all the while that I will have a panic attack if I miss an ND game. Then she assures me that she's kidding, and asks if we can do it on Sunday afternoon instead.

That's when I say, "but the Bengals are on," and she for real gets mad at me.

F/+ picks for Week 6 aren't out yet. Should be very soon, though. Most of the quantitative models love Stanford, so they'll likely predict an Irish loss. I think the betting line (Stanford -1) is probably more accurate. Feeling quietly confident about this game.

yeah, why is that? im completely in the same boat...in 2012 i thought we were going to lose at several times but had 0 confidence in the team...we have soo many new and young players and all of a sudden i feel not happy w/ a win but a beat down on some of our previous games....guessing ND is finally turning the corner to when i remember as a kid we were going to win each game

I haven't watched Stanford at all this year, but I remember reading that they didn't look that good against USC and their offense is average at best.

I am too. So far the eyeball test is all I am basing that on, but the trees have not looked good this year.

Isn't it nice? Kelly slowly but surely helping us get over Battered Fan Syndrome. Praying Swarbrick manages to keep him at ND until he retires.

Before the season started, I figured Stanford was our most likely loss on the schedule. We looked so weak up middle-- Jones unproven at NT (with a true freshman backing him up), undersized Joe Schmidt at MLB (with another true freshman backing him up), no leadership at Safety, etc.

But heading into Week 6, Jones has been solid (and Cage a revelation), Schmidt is playing at a high level, and Redfield + Shumate are lighting people up. Not to mention that Morgan should be able to spell Schmidt (keeping him fresh) since Stanford isn't going to try to spread us out. I'm confident BvG can stop Stanford's rush, and with Hogan's penchant for turn-overs and our DBs more aggressive and opportunistic than ever, I don't see the Cardinal hanging many points on us.

So the real question is who do you like better in a low-scoring defensive slug-fest: Golson or Hogan? I'm taking Golson every day of the week. ND wins 20-10.

I'm really hoping the running game can get going this weekend. It would make Golson's job so much easier

Would be nice, but I'm not betting on it happening against Stanford's front-7. I think the best we can hope for is what we saw against Syracuse-- a steady dose of screens to open up enough room for a few chain-moving runs up the middle.

I'm betting this game marks the beginning of regression to our schools' respective traditions. Stanford 10 ND 31.

My wife, who is past her due date, is scheduled for an induction tomorrow evening. Assuming she deliver sometime between Friday morning and Friday evening, we are going to be in the hospital until Sunday morning.

I've packed my ND shirt, an ND shirt for my son after his arrival. We'll be prepared but I pray that ND makes it easy on me and wins this game convincingly. I don't want to stress out in front of my son already. He needs to see his father in a good light.

We had our son (firstborn) Friday, September 2, 2011. The first game I got to watch with him was the USF game. Talk about a long, extended, stressed out game. I hope the outcome of your son's first game is better!

My son had the decency to be born early in the week (last year, just turned 1), so we were all able to watch the game from the comfort of our own home:

They moved the ball at will on usc they just forgot how to score once they got into red zone and usc territory...on phone and was several beers in switching back and fourth between games but they had the ball it seemed every time i flipped back....you would have to look at the box score as i am on phone and can't link

Stanford outgained USC 413 to 291 yards but couldn't overcome its own mistakes. The Cardinal committed two turnovers, eight penalties for 68 yards and Jordan Williamson missed two field goals.

Congrats man! My son is 6. Having a son is the best. Good luck on a healthy delivery.

This is about all we need to know about Stanford. This is going to be a battle from the first whistle. I think if we play a clean game (no turnovers and minimal penalties) we win by 7. If we have no drops and no busted assignments on defense we win by 14. And if the defense shows up and we have extraordinary tackling we win by 20. A lot of "Ifs".

Bolded equals damn near impossible. I would imagine that every game each team has at least one missed assignment. Even the most perfect game has flaws in it.

Yeah Kelly has mentioned twice that defense is missing assignments (has made it sound like it's often too). We've been superior athletically through 4 games to mask it.

Defense is gonna have to be better on their assignments, but the key for me is offense putting up points to keep the tree from playing their game.

I really feel like this game is going to come down to how ND plays on defense and not Stanford. We know what to expect and some of our guys have experienced that. Stanford has not played against this defense but the ones who have played us before remember what a top tier ND defense feels like. I think we have an upper hand going in. BK knows what to expect from their defense and that is a tough as "wall"! Flying around and knocking the shit out of you. He will be prepared. Shaw on the other hand, obviously solid coach, but can he prepare properly? If things start to get away from him offensively, will he be able to recover against our new scheme? No teling how long BVG will hold looks back till needed.

ND plays solid defense, we win by 4. We give up 2 big plays, we lose by 7.
