In that sudden death match, say USA and Germany make it out of their pool, they literally play one game until there's 10 goals? That's not split up at all over a number of games? CRAZY.

And the winner of that takes on other pool-winners? In another round robin type deal or how is the final team determined?

GITF is out of date on this. They had lots of people complaining about matches taking too long and how the quality of play decreased over the really long 6-8 hour matches as people got super tired, so now after a match hits 4 hours they take a break and come back the next day.

Still first to 10 wins though.

I can't believe you don't participate in the next 5 if you don't finish in top two of your bracket. Scheesh. Assuming the world cup is held annually, one or two major injuries and your country has to sit on it for the next half of a decade? Seems harsh. But maybe that fuels the excitement too.

Last question, how are the 'pools' selected? Completely random? Or do they go into the 'pooling' with a ranking, and higher ranked teams have a better shot at being placed with poor teams?

For every defender you fake out like this you earn extra time on clock improving your chances for winning so that is why the clock runs forward and not backward like US sports.

There are 4 groups of 7 pools (selected randomly) that take turns drawing the sticks. Its a big show they put on that happened today where each country sends a rep to draw their stick (England sent Princess Kate).

At the ref's discretion though, which is what makes matches so controversial.

I noticed it on my way out, but I was only able to see like 30 seconds worth and I had no idea what was going on.

The woman drawing didn't help my concentration either.

Yep this is Cristiano Ronaldo, the guy that plays for Portugal. He once racked up an extra hour on the clock for the number of jukes he completed. INSANE.

Ishh. Tough group for the US. Germany is an absolute power house. Portugal is in the same category. African teams are always very talented, but can't score. Nothing is impossible, but it's going to be hard for the US to get out this group. Another spectacular group of death.

Would anyone be interested in a pool where we select teams based on a ranking (we can agree what ranking we will use) and you do a snake pool to select teams. You get points based on seed and how far they get. So for example:

1. Brazil
2. Spain
3. Germany
4. Argentina

Person who drafts first could pick Spain and get 2 points x Round reached.

Ideally this would be an 8 person pool with 4 teams each.

Playing Germany is a cool storyline with our German coach. Not saying I'm glad we drew Germany, not by a long shot, but it's kind of interesting.

I might be... though the draw should be closer to the actual games...

I am pretty happy with Italy's draw...They could have been worse off. and If they win group D they should get a pretty weak match up from group C.

I feel awful for the US. that SUCKS so much donkey dik..... Absolutely horrible group for them. I don't think many people realize how important Bradley's play in the middle is to that team. If he has a good tournament, and can distribute the ball and try to control the middle they have a chance to get through. If the US comes out and plays this long ball crap they do, then they are done. You cant play that way against these Euro teams.

True, Bradley is critical.

We are also going to need top-notch finishing from Altidore and others. Blowing good chances always seems to kill us in big international competitions. A coldly, ruthlessly efficient finisher is something we've lacked for ... ever, maybe. Dempsey is closest, but he's not really the number 9 I'm talking about.

Testify. And while we're talking midfielders can we please keep Jermaine Jones off the field? We don't need sloppy and erratic play in the midfield.

I would much rather Mixx Diskerud over Jermaine Jones... which is unfortunate because I think Jones is one of our most talented players.

Another positive is we have a ton of German-based players right now.
