The US men's soccer team visited an orphanage in Brazil yesterday. "It's heartbreaking to see their sad little faces with no hope," said Jose, age 6

Sorry, I just had to post that here too, for those who didn't read it...

Alright for the next month all my soccer posts will be in this thread for the most part, then back to everything soccer post world cup.

I am curious to see what you guys think. Say the impossible happens, and the USA wins the World Cup, what does that do for soccer in America? How do things change?

I think the MLS is growing regardless... don't know if it impacts that much... but it will most likely spike the amount of top flight athletes in this country that look at soccer... right now, playing soccer is not really an option for most of our best athletes...

If the US wins, the Europeans will call it a fluke, South Americans will still be their usually cocky selves and Brazil specifically will implode when the lose the Cup.

Most of the US will celebrate for the month of July, and then it will be forgotten when football season starts, because there are still to many people who simply don't care about soccer in America.

Now that is a fascinating question. I've always been a firm believer that USA will never be good at soccer. Its just not their thing. American Football is what they do, thats where the athletes go, then theres basketball, then baseball...then probably croquet or racquetball...then bowling and then soccer.
But for real, they've tried the whole 'bring soccer to the US' with Pele and then a massive $250 million dollar contract with Beckham, some movies...etc and its never worked. I don't know why, I personally love soccer. The rest of my family, not so much, they get bored with it. But if I didn't do what I do...I would definitely play football for ND then I would probably start my soccer career, large in part because the injury factor in football is so high.
Many people from other nations accuse the USA of being lazy and thats why soccer is not at an elite level. I have agreed in the past, but that just don't make sense.
Athletes, in any sport, fight tooth and nail to be the best because thats what it takes to be a champion and to make the good money. So, it seems like theres just no interest in the sport and I can't say for sure why exactly.

Neymar ties it. Didn't actually get a lot of the shot but it went in low past the outstretched goalie.

Marcelo better watch his back if brazil doesn't win. He might go out Escobar style like in the 94 World Cup.

Isn't that sad that people take soccer so seriously over there? They bleed it. If that was the case here, Tommy Rees would have been taken out a LOOOONG time ago.

Brasil is not Colombia in the 90s. Don't believe everything you see on TV. I went there for a month last year, and know a few girls that actually have been living there by themselves for 2 years now. People are very nice over there.

Crap so I missed the opening ceremonies? Thought BST mean Brazil Standard Time.

Colombia in the 90s? Are you aware of what you referring to? Do you know the whole back story to Andres Escobar and the circumstances surrounding his death?

I had a college roommate from a wealthy Colombian family and he was kidnapped about 10 times growing up.

Freaking out when he said that one day, he explained, "I actually kind of liked it. They would always let me watch whatever I wanted on TV, stay up as late as I wanted, and I got to eat pretty much all the junk food I wanted." Crazy ass Colombians......

Yes. What is your point?

Mine was that just because something like this happened in one South American country, it doesn't mean it would happen in another. Which is what some posters were inferring.

As you know, the crime rate in Mayberry, NC is the same as Detroit, MI.

There is a very large community of Colombians in the South Shore of Montreal. They basically all have been kidnapped at one point. Some stories are worst than others. A friend of mine got raped and pregnant from it. She is strong.

Yeah, Colombia has quite the history. Its an incredible country and people.

Point was that just because Andres was shot after score an auto goal doesn't mean that Colombians killed players that screwed up. It was after Pablo Escobar was taken down and now the streets had no organization and gangs did whatever they wanted without having to answer to Pablo any more. So a bar fight broke out and some angry drunk fans shot Escobar.
Basically I'm agreeing with you, it was one isolated incident.
I very much dislike it when people judge a whole country based on misinformation.
