sister in law works full time and has one kiddo and she feels the opposite peer pressure like she is some sort of lesser mom because she drops her kid at daycare for practically 10 hours a day and the kid is bottle fed and is always getting sick from catching everything from other kids.

I've got news for ya, my wife breastfed all of our kids till they were 1 or a little older, and they still were constantly getting sick. None of my kids were even in a day care or preschool! They're 4-7 now and it's gotten much better, they're rarely sick now, but it seems like the first few years one of them was always sick at one point or another. So, she shouldn't feel bad about bottlefeeding, there's no guarantees the kid won't get sick anyway.

The first year of daycare was a nightmare. My kid was sick like every two weeks.

haha yeah can vouch the same here but this kid (my nephew) is constantly sick and all the family always blame it on the daycare and it makes his mom very guilty. She'd love to stay home and quit work but they rely on her salary to pay the mortgage and health insurance.

There might be layoffs here and/or my job might move to Burbank, so I need options. Still in very early stages but there's a very solid opportunity in MN that would be tough to pass up.

I see. Message me the company if you feel comfortable. MN has great schools, has a city life, traffic is awful (far worse than Milwaukee and Columbus, 2 other large cities I've lived in). If you like the northwoods, MN can be a great place to buy a cabin on a lake for cheap too.

single income family. Fortunate enough to make it work. Honestly, it's harder mentally on my wife than the wallet. She loves being able to have the time to be there for the kids. But, she also feels like she is somehow "less than" full time working mothers, especially when they make snarky comments to her. Lot's of pressure on women (as well as men) to be able to do it all.

Similar situation but my wife works two days a week. I hear the comments from her friends at times and I just tell her to shake it off. It's incredible - the snarky "money" or "work" comments almost always come from a woman standing in $300 shoes, draped in designer clothing, with a $20k ring resting nicely on a manicured hand that is gripping the strap of a Louis Vuitton bag. Thankfully, the comments exit the mind of my wife before her friend can even pull out of our driveway in her luxury SUV.

Jokes aside, I understand some women must work to keep their families financially afloat but there are plenty who convince themselves their decision to work is a necessity rather than a means to maintain a certain lifestyle.

It's worked out well for us, though. She earns a bit of money, they pay a huge portion of our health insurance benefits despite her working part time, she spends five days a week with our son, and our mothers are thrilled to watch him whenever we need a sitter.

It's a Catch-22. If you've got a degree and opt to prioritize your family, you're a traitor to your sex. If you work outside the home and pay for some sort of childcare, you're selfish and ruining your children's upbringing. A just society would offer much more meaningful part time work, so those women who want or need to work can do so without completely out-sourcing the child-rearing.

I hope to get there at some point, but my family couldn't make that work right now. We are a 1.5 income family, which keeps us afloat and keeps the credit score good.

My wife is home with our son half the week, which is nice. He's at daycare on campus where I work the other half of the week, and I usually try to stop in once a day on my way to lunch, so I don't get that guilt that I'm just dropping my kid off and letting strangers do the work, nor does my wife.

Once we have our second, childcare will get expensive even if they are both just part-time. Gonna have to make some moves professionally at that point, or figure out how to pay may student loans quick enough for my wife to be able to stay home full-time.

No judgment here, Lion. My kids are 10, 8, 6 and 4, and we were just able to do this because I made partner on January 1. My older two kids both started in daycare at 3 months old. The younger two had the benefit of an in-home nanny, but even that arrangement went south after a few years. You do what you have to to make ends meet.

Can confirm. My older two were constantly sick before starting kindergarten. We probably averaged one ear infection a quarter. But now they're never sick. Going through daycare gives you an iron-clad immune system.

That's not true. I lived on 23k when I was in the cities and did fine. It's got the highest average income to cost of living ratio in America.
