We have shared accounts and she checks for fraud like every 2 days. Is that that weird?

I dunno, maybe I'm atypical. We have separate cards and accounts with one joint account we started after we married that we both contribute to.

But I don't even want to know how much spends on shoes and yoga classes and avocado toast. And vice versa, I don't want her invested in how much I spend at happy hour or golfing.

Joint accounts or she's listed as secondary on everything we have. It's worked for us and helps us keep an accurate account of how much we're spending.

One bank account and one credit card here. We pretty much know where each other is spending money.

We cash out allowances each payday no questions asked... aside from that she's well aware of my extramarital affairs I have with Carne Asada and Al Pastor and deals as best she can...

I'm laughing at Koon being afraid to spend $58. lol

I have a 12' X 12' Coleman fold out canopy. I have no need for another one. However, Costco had an 12' X 12' ND logo canopy for $149 I couldn't resist. I thought about what the wife would say, then I bought it. lol

My wife is kind of like this... I'm def like you and the unbolded. I don't know why but she asks me if she can buy just about anything. I'm of the school that if it's needed and we have the funds, get it. If we WANT it and we have the funds, usually get that too. I buy stuff all the time without asking. Electric football stuff, video games, movies, clothes, books... she'll be in need of new shoes and come to me like she needs to beg or validate the purchase or something, it's the strangest thing. I honestly don't recall ever telling her no on any purchase but then again she isn't really a shopper or expensive girl at all so maybe it's just not in her DNA to buy stuff.

Thought we better move this discussion from the Talking Heads to here.

My wife is a lot like that. She decide to quit working a couple of years ago. If we're out shopping, she'll ask if it's okay to buy something. I never tell her no. We have separate accounts (her decision when we got married). My is actually a joint account, but she won't go near it for some reason. Now that she's not working she does complain some times about not having any money. I told her I would put our tax refund in her account, so she got $1,600. A few weeks back she says something about not having any money. I asked her what happened to the $1,600 and she said she didn't know. She said she rarely goes anywhere and never buys anything, but she's pretty sure she never had $1,600 in her account.

I pulled up her account on the iPad and handed it to her. Of course the $1,600 deposit was there along with every purchase she made and about $100 in ATM fees. I guess I'll have to deposit some more money to keep her quiet! lol

Actually, my wife is the same. She works 2x/week and I almost always give the greenlight unless I notice we are developing bad habits. Then we make a concerted effort together to not spend unnecessarily for 1-3 months.

She operates better knowing there won't be an issue when she pulls the trigger. I prefer that over impulsive shopping and asking forgiveness later. I try to do the same for her.

Wife and I have joint everything. She spends $175 on stupid fucking haircuts, I spend on tools. Works out fine.

HA! I told the story a while back of a bunch of female students raging in the halls over their boyfriend's video games costing 60 bucks and such and how they must all put their foots down then immediately jumping right to, "Girl where'd you get your hair done?" ... "It only cost 350 dollars including the nails". Those types never cease to amaze me.

I cut my own hair and my wife and daughters get maybe two haircuts a year each at your basic 25 dollar a pop spots... bless up.

Been cutting my own hair since college. I've probably paid for only one or two haircuts for myself in the past 30 years. My wife's had her hair cut only a couple of times since we met. The rest of the time she trims it herself. The idea of a $300 haircut is ridiculous.

Ha! I was at my parents getting ready to attend my cousin's wedding and my trusty clippers finally died after years of service. I had accidentally left my wallet in my car back in Sacramento, so my Mom gave me $40 (!) for a haircut. I came back with a new set of clippers and $5 change.

She asked me what the hell I was doing and I told her I thought it was more responsible to buy my next 200 haircuts for the same price. I looked good at the wedding.

Not exactly on topic, but since this is the only "wives" thread we have, I'll share it here.

After 12 years at Honeywell, I finally convinced my wife to quit her job on Holy Thursday. Our household income dropped by about 50%, but life has never been better.

Highly recommended. If you can make it work on one income, you should try it.

They pay well, but once you get close to the top of the org chart, work/life balance goes to hell. Might be different as an engineer though. My wife was in HR. She was having to travel, sometimes internationally, at least one week out of every month in her last role. Was just too much time away from the kids. The extra money wasn't worth it.

4, and I'm trying to talk her into 5 and 6 now.

I think you're looking for the Wives and the Genius Things They Say/Do thread. It's not very big, so it may be hard to find.

In all seriousness, gratz to your family!

All about balance and quality of life. We have five. The wife stayed home with them in their early years to ensure they got the proper attention and direction. Now that all but one (#5 is trying) has given us grandkids, I can tell you, it was worth it and our quality of life never changed.

Now back to the topic at hand. We're redoing our back patio (pavilion cover and pergola). Still working on it, but the wife insists on moving the patio table and chairs back onto the patio along with some planters. I have to move the stuff off to get back to work on it. "I just wanted to see what everything was going to look like." Okay dear, but once is enough until I finish.

Single income family here too (wife at home). I would never want anyone but my wife raising my kids. We moved out from the city to a small town for the less expensive cost of living and we love it. 2 kiddo's now and hoping to have 2 more down the line.

single income family. Fortunate enough to make it work. Honestly, it's harder mentally on my wife than the wallet. She loves being able to have the time to be there for the kids. But, she also feels like she is somehow "less than" full time working mothers, especially when they make snarky comments to her. Lot's of pressure on women (as well as men) to be able to do it all.

sister in law works full time and has one kiddo and she feels the opposite peer pressure like she is some sort of lesser mom because she drops her kid at daycare for practically 10 hours a day and the kid is bottle fed and is always getting sick from catching everything from other kids.

Congrats. Now that our kids are older and getting on with their own lives, we look back on the decision to be a single income family and always come back to "we would do it again."

I hope to get there at some point, but my family couldn't make that work right now. We are a 1.5 income family, which keeps us afloat and keeps the credit score good.

My wife is home with our son half the week, which is nice. He's at daycare on campus where I work the other half of the week, and I usually try to stop in once a day on my way to lunch, so I don't get that guilt that I'm just dropping my kid off and letting strangers do the work, nor does my wife.

Once we have our second, childcare will get expensive even if they are both just part-time. Gonna have to make some moves professionally at that point, or figure out how to pay may student loans quick enough for my wife to be able to stay home full-time.

No doubt, no doubt.

Thankfully, my wife was a zookeeper so when she stopped working we only lost about 25% of our income. She's been home since we came to Connecticut and it's fantastic for everybody.
