Vaccums

I'm looking to buy a vaccum. Have hardwood throughout the house, but large area rugs in every room. Have a small dog, Chipper, who sheds mildly but nothing crazy. Of all things, buying a vaccum is the household item I dread the most. They're wildly priced and seem like they never get cheaper over time like most items do as the market saturates with more options.

Anyone have a brand/model of vaccum for under $200 that they bought new and were very happy with? Thanks.

We have the typical yellow Dyson and it has worked amazing for years now... super happy with it. Pretty sure they're still more than 200 though.

I've always preferred having a vacuum that I can slam some nose beers with.

I have an old victorian home that has solid hardwood floors throughout the home and only have carpet on the steps and in the 3rd floor....2 dogs w/ very little shedding...anyways i am cheap when it comes to vacuums and what i have spent in the past 10 years on vacuums i could have had a good one that would have lasted and would have been cheaper....it seems outragous to spend more than that; but the hardwood shows every little bit of dust....don't go cheap

Yes they do and I can't agree more. I swear I sweep every 2 days.

I can't believe this is an actual thread on a ND message board most occupied my dudes.
Are you asking so you know what to buy your boyfriend or what to ask for from him?

We have the Dyson V6 Absolute, which comes with two attachments...one for hardwood and one for carpet. Best vacuum I have ever owned. Pricey though.

Can't believe I'm entertaining this thread, BUT:

Bought a vacuum from Costco for $100 about 5 years ago. Have two dogs that shed mercilessly, and a wife that is messy. Thing still runs like a top. I wouldn't spend more than that unless you run a cleaning service or live in a mansion, but I guess if you lived in a mansion, the cleaning service would bring their own Dyson.

I thought the same thing until I used a Dyson. Your carpets aren't clean until you use a Dyson on them. No joke, worth every damn penny.

Shark Rotator Lift Away on sale at Costco. More durable than the Dyson and lighter. Dyson attachments break more easily. Both good, but Shark is better and cheaper.

If you really want the vacuum for pet hair, I suggest taking a strong look at the Dyson Animal. If this is not an issue, go with the Shark.

In one thread I sing the praises of a $400k car and in the next I scoff at those who pay the extra for a Dyson. Had two Dyson's and shipped them off with the Ex. Never had a problem with either in 4-5 years. Bought a new one for myself and it broke within a year. While I was having it fixed, I bought the vacuum below, the Shark NV22. When I got the Dyson back, I sold it on CL and have had the Shark for 7 years now and it picks up everything the Dyson did. If you don't want to drop unneeded coin, the Shark is a quality option.

Also picked up a Shark Cordless for $150.

Buy your boyfriend a Dyson. Nuf said. I've got a standard for whole house, and a small cordless for a room or two. Both do well on hardwoods and tile. If you're only going to do a room or two at a time, the cordless is awesome to grab and go. Also great for little messes with the small attachments.

A 45 year old woman who knows a thing or two about sucking is nothing to scoff at, gb.

I assume we're talking about shopvacs. Rigid makes a good one.

Get a cheap piece of garbage to last you a few months, and then go to Home Depot, Lowes or Walmart on Black Friday and get a Dyson for <$100.

I found a new $350 Dyson on EBay for $225. My wife thought I was nuts for spending $225 for a vacuum, but it's the best we've ever had. We have hardwood and carpet. Works well on both.

Besides, Dyson is made in England and that poor countries economy needs a boost right now. Do your part Koon.

Wife just bought a Shark and says it works great. Ill never touch it so can not give you any feed back. I wanted the robotic set it and forget it deals. Dark hardwood through out the house we just built. The wife picked it and I think its hilarious :)

Dumbest thread ever, but what the hell...I'm in.

We junked our Dysons. They're awful after a year or two. Cleaning the canisters is a pain in the ass too, especially if you do it as often as you're supposed to. We switched to a Miele Upright vaccum. Have had it for three years and haven't had a single problem with it and I like the bags much better. It's an extra cost, but it's so much easier to not worry about cleaning the canister and all the parts. You can also buy add-ons that are specific to cleaning furniture (good for homes with pets), among other things.

What Dyson did you buy? Because honestly... Everyone I know owns one and they are the best. It's not even close. Did you buy a cheap model or something?

Rule of thumb with any purchase.... Never buy the base model of anything.
