There would still have to be a driver in the cab. No? If so, truck drivers would be grateful for this. If not, one of America's biggest jobs is effed.

For now. It's pretty obvious this is a first step in getting rid of them entirely.

Not unless everybody else is in one, as well.

We put our lives in the hands of computers every day in some way, shape or form, so it's less about trusting the computer, and more about trusting other drivers to interact with my driving-computer appropriately.

Statistically at this point an autonomous car is safer than a driven car even with other humans interacting with it.

As a consumer, I'm all for autonomous vehicles. They are going to be safer, easier, more economical and will likely bump up the concept of cheap ride sharing in the US by a fair margin. As a human being who doesn't want to be owned by someone like Zuckerberg, I have concerns. But that's about socioeconomics not the tech. I think they're pretty obviously the future.

Can you imagine Truck Drivers losing their jobs?

Trump would have what he needed to become King of The United States of Trump.

That's a good point, I suppose a driver would still need to sit in the chair (at least with early technology), load material, bang hookers at truck stops, etc. but it certainly would be the first step in total replacement. It would also dramatically effect their pay I imagine.

Just got inspired to write a movie script:

The Last Trucker

In the year 2029, the big rigs of old have been replaced by the sleek, sharp, clean trucks of the new world. These new trucks drive themselves, and an operator in the cab only serves to track navigation and oversee battery recharging when the truck stops itself at one of the countless charging stations that now litter the country.

The operators are woefully underqualified, lulled into a sense of security by the trucks that never fail to drive themselves perfectly... until one day, the last holdout of a bygone generation will be needed.

A collective computer update failure forces one man, who chain-smokes Marlboro Reds and manages to find the one truckstop hooker left in every town, to rise up and teach the miserable lot of "truck cab overseers," so they might activate the dusty manual controls and navigate treacherous mountain roads. He has to teach them more than just the rudimentary skills they know.

He must teach them to:

HAUL FOR THEIR LIVES.

Throw in an arm-wrestling contest subplot for good measure

Absolutely.

And if Swayze was still around, I'd throw him in as an obscure tie-in to Black Dog. Probably have hIm chilling in some backwoods truckstop that no one knows about during a post-credits scene, where we learn that the truckers of old are still numerous, just hidden and plotting a rise against the machines.

Have him rise from the dead via magic.

I wonder if the automated trucks will drive 55 in the left lane. Would be nice to program that out.

Or drive next to eachother in an attempt to pass despite both trucks going roughly the same speed.

That always kills me driving through the hills in Kentucky.

There's always the one trucker that gets into the fast lane at the bottom of the mountain, so he can "pass" the drivers in slower trucks.

Unless there's some etiquette or purpose I'm not aware of, it chaps my ass.

This movie is grounded until Sam Elliot and a cgi version of Jerry Reid are written into the script.

I'd love to do a cameo as one of the 10 passengers in Jughead's chartreuse mikerbus.

One would think the first phase will be the trucks making the run from Denver to Chicago, and then basically all Great Plains/Midwest runs.

Then there'll be a decade or so of huge hubs for "last mile" drivers outside cities that're built on freeway exists that will dwarf railcar stations.

My family's company hires truckers, albeit for dump trucks. I can't see them being automated anytime soon, and even then it's maybe just for interstate paving.

In talking to truckers about this automation threat, they say it's actually a good time to get into the industry, even without a CDL, because of all of the light runs that Amazon is doing. One can bet the drone deliver R&D is full speed ahead though.

I'm sorry, I thought you said free Tesla. What did you really say?

We've lent Elon some money to run his business on a few occasions starting in '13. He gave us a lil extra back for the trouble.

When I started this thread. Tesla was at $230. It traded around $200 until the holidays and has doubled off it's lows then.

I don't give people specific financial advice but I personally believe Tesla will be at $1000 by 2020. Tesla is a can't lose. The automotive industry is in the autonomous revolution and EVERYTHING is cheap. Tesla, Google/Waymo, Intel/Mobileye, NXP Semiconductors (and Qualcomm if they acquire NXP).

I hate to sound obvious but Alphabet, Amazon, Tesla and Intel will all lead to a happy retirement.

They will never be at $1000. They would split the stock before then. I get what you're saying, but just a note.

Legitimately curious why you think 1) they will get there and 2) why by 2020? Or are you just driving home your confidence in the near-term upside in the stock?

Tesla is going to have mainstream vehicles in the Camry/Accord/ size and price category and a smaller CUV (the Model Y) in 2019 that will be in the $40k base category.

Add to that a truck & Semi lines and whatever IP control they have over the autonomous vehicle revolution and it's a no brainer to me.

2020 was used cuz it's a few years off not because it's an election year or any other factor.

A guesstimate of new offerings in Tesla's future line up:
