Those things are directly correlated, but there are much less charming coaches selling a worse school than ND who consistently out recruited Kelly, so who knows?
We are officially surfing the ‘who knows?’ wave,… we are back in 1983

Actually think Rees with a competent QB would be a very good OC. He just doesn’t know wtf to do when he can’t successfully throw it 40+ times a game.

We have a couple of savages at running back. An all timer at tight end. I like Styles and Tobias blew to top off the defense twice. This shit shouldn’t be this hard. What a feeble performance. And as frustrating as the tackling is at times, (third and long) the defense has played pretty well. I hate that I look forward to this all year.
It’s like gearing up for thanksgiving and mom pulls a tofurkey out of the oven bc dads cholesterol is too high. Buzzkill.

I honestly think I would have.
I made a call in the second quarter that we just needed to fully commit to running the ball with Estime (and Diggs). Very next play Rees calls that cute Lenzy thing. He just wasted too much time before going back to what works.
He’s another one that needs to move out of the way for the younger players. Lenzy should’ve been playing CB all along.

Kelly couldn't get us over the hump. Fickell would have been Kelly 2.0. Even if he flames out, gambling on the young ace recruiter was the right call.
Respectfully disagree. Especially when paired with a young and promoted from within OC in Rees. Freeman is lost on the Offensive side of the ball and Rees sucks and too green. This train wreck was something I saw coming- wish Swarbrick let Freeman pick his own OC at least in this hot mess.

Doesn't matter how long you have to throw if no one is open. Stanford was pretty excellent in coverage all night.
What will it take for you to blame Tommy for the offensive struggles? Not since KMoose defending Joe Schmidt for the entire ‘15 season has someone supported a beleaguered coach/player as hard as you. Gotta hand it to you, you’re a loyal guy. Probably a great dad and husband.

Some of you all need a Snickers.
Yeah, turns out Pyne isn't the second coming of Joe Montana, and you can't build an entire offense around a tight end. Turns out it's harder for your defense when half the starting 11 is hurt. And it turns out Stanford actually has some good football players.
We've a lot of work to do, for sure, and I'm done with guys like Lenzy and Bertrand. Put the young kids on the field. But the whole "Fire Freeman, all is lost" shit is a lot. He will figure it out.

Brian Kelly year 10 or Brian Kelly year 1.
This is good perspective. The problem is that MF inherited a better situation than BK. That said, BK had some bad losses those first two seasons (Tulsa, Navy, USF) and he had some other inexplicable losses before 2017. The offense needs to find an identity that works. Tommy took this job knowing full well that he was going to have to roll w/ a first time starter at QB this season. That puts the onus on him as the play caller. In the first 2 games, the OL was shit so it was more than Tommy.

One thing MF needs to ask is “is Tommy maximizing the talent he has at his disposal?” Specifically, the skill position players. If he doesn’t like the WR or RB corps, then scheme to what they can do. He has zero problem scheming to Mayer. Sure Mayer is a phenom but ND hasn’t had Mayer-like talent at all offensive positions since the Holtz era.

Having a legit QB one over 6’2 would solve all our problems and there isn’t one on the current roster time to put your big boy pants on and go out and get the best QB transfer
I'm guessing you're talking about batted passes, some people have been talking about that tonight. If so, that one's a myth. Short QBs get their passes batted no more frequently than tall ones. Now, whether they see the field worse than a tall QB is a different story.

Yeah prioritizing a winning program is bullshit

High academic standards sure win A LOT of bragging rights over other fans with us in the real world am I right?!? Seriously ND football is a team I’m a fan of and I just want to see them win. I’m glad the kids aren’t shitbags but the “morals” (lol) that this program insists on having don’t win us games soooooooooooooo….yeah I’d be ok with running this program with an SEC school if it didn’t mean being a laughingstock like we are right now or like the laughingstock we always are when we play in a big postseason game.

Tommy also seems like an OC who's brilliant when he's landing his jabs, but has no fucking clue what to do when the opposing DC takes away his Plan A. That's the only way I can explain the Marshall and Stanford losses alongside the flashes of brilliance between.

You should give a new coach 3 years. Get all his guys in there, get his staff in there, and see what's up.

I didn't see much that was bad head coaching... I saw a bad OC left over from the last regime.
A bad OC that won a lot of these games with a different HC. Weird how that works.

Here’s where I am at with Notre Dame football….

Wondering If South Carolina has ever played Oregon State, and seriously considering googling it…

If he doesn’t force Angeli to start, that’ll be a red flag.

And no, I’m not saying Angeli will be the savior.
He was the guy Tommy absolutely HAD to have in the 2022 class. It's win-win. If he plays well, they have something to build on heading into next season. If he stinks, then that's absolutely the final nail in Rees' coffin.

Charm only gets you so far.
MFMF needs to win.

Otherwise Swarbrick sold out the program to keep one recruiting class happy.

And let's be 100% honest while for a normal person a ND degree means more on a resume.
For a contributor on a football team it doesn't matter if they went to Harvard, ND, or Arkansas.
Doors will be opened for them that a normal person doesn't even knows exists.

Bama 3rd stringers will never have to look hard for a job in Bama.

My only real takeaway today:

Tennessee: Let’s unleash pyrotechnics, create the atmosphere of a heavy metal concert, and set off a seismograph today

Notre Dame: Let’s wave glowsticks before kickoff today

Rees is what he is. He's like the weather. People like you been complaining about him since 2011.
The issue is that a team with our aspirations has no business having a QB as limited as Pyne (or Rees). But for many reasons - including Rees' recruiting - that seems to be what we've got. And so here we are.
