This is a transition year. We were hoping to win 10+ games again to build momentum toward a more talented roster ASAP, but it looks like 6-8 wins is more likely now. We'll see how much the winning this year matters to his recruits.

100% not true.

As a gym teacher, maybe. This meme that scout team players for Bama, Georgia and OSU are set for life due to millions in under the table booster bucks is pure fucking cope.

What is wrong with being a Phys Ed teacher?

Trying to keep a level head here - it’s unlikely we have QB play this bad again under Rees / Freeman. Pyne is the back up QB for a reason and Buchner is incredibly raw. Think it’s fair to think about how much a Coan-level transfer and + Kevin Austin returning solves things. We are potentially 6-0 in that case.

Freeman / Rees not taking a transfer WR is inexcusable really.
Funny thing is Coan and Austin both could be on this team. And yeah we'd probably be 5-1, anyway.

But, no, we bet too much on Buchner and a bunch of iffy WRs. Our run/play-action offense can work but it leaves too little margin for error without an absolutely lights-out defense which we don't quite have. When you're used to winning, you can talk yourself into a lot of things. But winning is still hard.

Better upgrade the talent. Its tough to gameplan when your QB and WR's are terrible.
It won't matter who the play caller is if you don't get better players.
It’s interesting to see the newest defense for Tommy’s performance form in real time.

If Fickell was the only guy Jack was talking to, then that's a problem in itself. USC pulled in prime rib pussy in Lincoln Riley and we are talking to Backyard Burgers?

As the Great Humongous said, 'What a puny plan'.
If you want to personally tell off the players who wanted Freeman, then be realistic about what the alternative was. Saban and Meyer were never options.
Eh. The BOT and administration still wanting to hang in from#20-25 academically and ND not getting progressive and dynamic will keep the program down until it changes it's course.
WTF does that mean?

I’m absolutely not going to hate on that and appreciate the tradition and significance.

But I’ll be damned if that isn’t a weird phenomenon.

Give me a break. They did that with Holtz. That's not why the team loses, lol.

What's sad is I can't really see ND competing with the big boys...like Ever. This isn't the 80s with 2 football games on every Sat and one of them is ND. Especially with playoffs...I mean in what world will ND beat the likes of OSU, Bama, UGA (in consecutive weeks to win a Natty). Christ they haven't beat three teams like that since 95, let alone in an expanded playoff...They aren't built for this...maybe in the 1920s they were...but I'm convinced most of us will die without seeing ND win another title.
It's an absolute certainty. 90 percent of this very board falls in line with the rigorous academic standard excuse as to why we can't get over the hump. Toss in NIL and a very Conservative BOT. What elite coach wants to fuck themself over. No one.
Meanwhile ND still hauls in 2nd most money per year behind Texas. We aren't a "Football Factory" I think we are. Just a half assed one..make the changes. There's a reason BK stepped down. This program can't get over the hump to be elite. We are at best 5-10 at our ceiling. Until the BOT, Administration,. alumni,.fans change their lime of thinking this is it. ND stopped caring about winning just before the turn of the century and the line of thinking is the same. The results of this program will be the same. That's what it is

There is no way in my book that Freeman comes out of this 3-3 start as a good head coach. If your assistants are crapping the bed that badly, step up and lead as the HEAD coach or else your job is on the line.

I've been worried about it from the start, grew more concerned after the Ok State bowl loss, and was convinced after the 0-2 start this year. Freeman is not the guy. I had my doubts to begin with, and really was pulling for him, but I am sorry, this dude is in over his head.

As bad as this team is, just wait till Mayer, Patterson and Foskey (although I didn't hear his name once tonight) start sitting out games.

Yup. I don't think Austin helps us in this game anyway if he comes back though. Stanford was in tight coverage all game, same as Ok State in the 2nd half of that Fiesta. We already saw Lenzy and Austin disappear when that happened. Maybe he helps against Marshall, but the OL was a mess in that game still so who knows.

I hope he means ND needs to be a modern football program with an eye toward the future rather than the past.

I never said your post discussed Rees. But MF is inexperienced as a HC and Luke Fickell is experienced. If the idea was to desperately keep Rees then pairing him with an experienced HC Fickell would have made more sense than this disaster as it’s clear inexperienced Freeman is the proverbial Blind leading the Blind w Rees.
Not sure why you're quoting my posts then. Swarbrick's decision to unilaterally retain Rees was obviously a mistake. I think Freeman was the right call even as a gamble. You would be loudly complaining about the same shit had we hired Fickell instead.

Did they also do it with Faust, Devine, Ara, etc?

Idk how many of these kids are practicing Catholics, but even for those that are, that’s a pretty big gameday shift from what they’ve been accustomed to, if they were returning players.

Not blaming the losses on that at all, but we absolutely have come out flat every single home game and that’s one difference in this year’s gameday prep.

I’d be fine with a transition year if we were actually developing Buchner. Without him getting reps just feels like a lost season.
That's what sucks about playing without him this year. How nice would it be to go into next year knowing more about him? Instead, we got a mediocre placeholder QB in the huddle.

I'm not talking about booster bucks at all.

You think theres someone who went to Bama as a student who's now a manager at some company that sees a former player come across his desk that's not hiring that former player?

You think you personally would have got the same chance at ESPN Golic JR got?
Do you honestly believe he didn't get that chance only because of his old man AND because he's a former player?

Herbstreit walked right into ESPN

Chiney Ogwumike and all her opportunities since playing at Stanford and while playing in the WNBA.

It's a 100% true that former college athletes get opportunities that you and I wouldn't get.

Yeah, I dunno if Austin is a difference maker or not for our team this year. But Pyne, as well as he played against UNC and BYU, is pretty limited as a QB. Not his fault, he just is. And the better-coached defenses will take advantage of that and take away Mayer and then we have to execute in the running game perfectly or else. You can't consistently win like that.

My post said nothing about Rees. But there's no evidence that waiting for Fickell instead of promoting Freeman would have worked out better for us. It would have been more of the same, and you would not be satisfied with continuing to average 9.5 wins per season while getting intermittently smoked by the Big 3.
Respectfully, the evidence is Fickell doesn’t lose games like this.

while Rees deserves all the criticism he gets, WTF is up w/ this OL? That OL that everyone was raving about got the entire game started off on a shitty note. Sure ND ran it well against a shitty Cal team in the 2nd half. They ran it well against one of the worst D in FBS when they faced UNC. They ran it well vs another bad run defense in BYU. So the assumption was that they could walk their fat asses out there tonight against another one of the worst run D in the nation and dominate. They aren’t that good. At best, they’re average. When you can’t dominate a shit D like Stanford, you don’t get to talk shit…so STFU.

It is rather frustrating. This is the one position group that ND should always be able to rely on.

Yup. Carr and extra receivers can't get here soon enough. I really thought after the last few weeks we'd dominate in the trenches, especially with Stanford missing some personnel. Their OL really had no business getting away with holds and beating us while missing half their guys.
