Yeah that's interesting. As you acknowledge, it's an issue that has received some publicity:

'Ole Miss' Debates Campus Traditions With Confederate Roots : NPR
University of Mississippi initiative to stop using Ole Miss nickname because of past racist connotations draws student and alumni complaints.

but it hasn't generated the heat that "Redskins" has.

I suppose that stands to reason though. The people who are opposed to "Redskins" think it is a slur. No one is saying that "Ole Miss" is a slur ... just that it it is insensitive because it brings to mind a racist past. Even looking at both issues from the standpoint of those most likely to be offended, the injury is far less direct.

Do you think that would be the case if people understood what that term represents? I feel they get the pass since people in, say, Seattle have no clue Ole Miss was a nickname used by slaves versus the very obvious Redskins name.

Yeah, I think that's definitely a factor. But I think just as important is that "Ole Miss" doesn't disparage anyone directly; at most it merely recalls the antebellum South. Obviously those memories are painful for a lot of people, but if we were going to expunge the term on that basis, we'd have to get rid of a lot of other stuff.

I thought they just didn't want an ugly president.

Ole Miss bothers me a lot. The fact that only around one half of their African American athletes graduate, coupled with the pre game parties in The Grove give me flashes of the opening plantation party in Gone with the Wind.

As a supporter of RG3 for a number of reasons, I'm simply disappointed the way his career is heading. I like his confidence, but he is simply not a drop back, pocket passer and it shows each and every snap. I think this is made evident by the fact that the same offense is run by him, Cousins, and McCoy and, to be honest, the latter two are making RG3 look like a fool when it comes to understanding the playbook, identifying reads, and working through progressions. Time for the 'Skins to once again start looking for yet another "franchise" QB.

This is a classic case of square peg, round hole. RGIII never had to develop his QB skills. He carried Baylor simply on his athletic ability and his ability to improvise. Contrary to what some analysts reported, RGIII was never a serious consideration. The Colts were always going to pick Luck.

I saw a comment on twitter that the redskins are the Kardashians of the NFL. I laughed at first but the more i think about it is very true.

They drafted a bad choice in RGIII. They fired a coach that had the team in somewhat of an up swing. To hiring a terrible head coach in Gruden. He might be a good coordinator however he is a Terrible head coach.

They have turned this team into even more of a drama team then the cowboys. It really is laughable.

Just saw this on Yahoo

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/poll--9-in-10-native-americans-do-not-oppose--redskins--name-133502582.html

Washington's NFL team name has been the source of controversy for decades, a controversy that's ramped up in recent years as groups on multiple fronts have protested the use of the name 'Redskins.' A new Washington Post poll has brought the question surging back to the fore with a definitive finding: 9 of 10 Native Americans do not have a problem with the name.

I see Nike is blackmailing the redskins. They are pulling their apparel for Nike’s website. Last time I checked blackmail was illegal. But this soft ass country we live in they’ll change the name of the team. And I’ll never watch another NFL game and of hope that Nike takes a large hit. I have never in my life seen the amount of sissy bitches.

They are quite literally making a business decision. They see the way the winds are going and it does not make sense for them to continue to sell that merch. Isn't the trope that liberals are a bunch of sissy's because they want these types of changes, but people claiming they wont watch the NFL because of a name charge are the true fans/tough guys?

Change the name!!

Indians owned slaves, Indians invaded and stole land.

Change the name to the DC Dinosaurs.... because it’s their native land.

Tough guys taking their ball a going home is one of the great ironies of the internet.

They should change the name to ‘Child Laborers’,... just to be sure Nike is comfortable with it.

If I was a pro team with a mascot in question, I'd be racing to land the name All Blacks. Coolest team on the planet.

That’s off the top of my head so I’m sure I’m leaving some out, but all those names have to go based on today’s cancel culture.
