Or you could have invited them to observe your white privilege and poured beer on their heads

Or just drank a beer with them and talked like ....normal people w/o an identity...

When people know each other's story, I find they are less presumptive about the other simply based upon pre-conceived notions.

Thats the part of white privilege that is hard to digest...it presumes a whole lot about a whole lot of people...

Not sure that works very well no matter your race...it may serve some for some period, but thats not helping the big picture....IMHO.

I think it's very ironic that the same people who get angry about white people portraying Asians and other ethnicities in movies are the same people who are up in arms about those who complain about a black Santa. Santa = Saint Nicholas = real white person.

I personally could care less who puts on a Santa costume (or who portrays Genghis Khan or whatever). I just hate hypocrites.

How come every time us Chinese put up a wall, stupid Mongorians have to come and knock it down?

Ironic, huh?

I love conversations about things like political correctness.

My prediction is most people will soon reject science in totality.

I've kind of kept up with the human genome project and a couple of other megalithic studies of our species.
1) we are all black underneath. All of our ancestors came out of Africa, it is just a matter of when. Unlike the Huns' beliefs (Arian Germans, who aren't, and Victorian English mistakenly thinking they are ancient, and Anglo-Saxon,) 'white' is a relatively recent mutation, 20,000 to 50,000 years ago. Another fairly recent mutation allowed for lighter pigment among Asians.
2) To keep seeing the world with marshmallow glasses, all so inclined will have to reject science and history, because;
3) Science shows there is miniscule differences genetically between any two humans, no matter how different they look, and any time you subjugate any population by looks, economics, etc., and put them in a position of deprivation, at the same time reserving privilege for other, different groups, you negatively affect the social behavioral norms of that population.
4) So talking about inconsistencies, and minor flaws in social conventions, without doing anything about it is soothing behavior of the spiritually week, and character deficient.

Now this, and right after I accepted my white privilege.

How do you even thing these things?

Further, someone should have been shot for allowing John Wayne to portray Genghis Khan.

I cannot even imagine wasting time ascribing 'a look' (discredited term : phenotype) to anyone in any 'role.' Except when someone who has no reason playing anything outside of a narrow range of roles because of their limited acting ability, makes it a shit-show!

"Santa = Saint Nicholas = real white person." Asia minor isn't noted for having a lot of 'real white people.' When I was faced with not even being able to talk intelligently because of my preconceptions, I changed my preconceptions.

And for other posters -

As far as the professor of the Wisconsin class, which I would love to audit, why is a picture of him at all relevant? The only person I could see being interested in that was an overbearing person with feelings of inferiority, who use obsolete, uninformed, and erroneous beliefs coupled with feelings of superiority to belittle others.

(Okay to be tiny, if everyone else is made smaller, so to speak.)

Did anyone actually read any information about the course? Because it wouldn't matter who the professor was. I would like to audit the course, personally.

Saint Nicholas wasn't white. He was from the Greek conquered area of Asia minor (Turkey). He was most definitely of middle eastern descent and depicted as quite dark in complexion.

Oh... and, uh.... Hi Fellers.

Always a fun conversation this time of the year. Plays to the other conversation of the "over-secularization" of Christmas and Santa Claus/Saint Nicholas.

Note: I knew it was immature (bad taste?) to throw the picture of the professor up, but was hoping to read some good banter. Through the banter, there are usually good viewpoints/info i've never considered or didn't know.

Also, I read the course description and it does seem pretty interesting. There are some major concerns about the actual classroom time which can either help the course become highly educational or counterproductive/unproductive. I would assume that more of these courses will be popping up.

Lol I won't disagree with wooly if this was important enough to come out of hibernation. I apologize for saying he was white. I still think it's ironic though. My church is St. Nicholas and all our icons depict him as white so I think that's where I got that from.

His family was a Greek family in Turkey, so he might have been a little more white than Middle Eastern, but not much. To be fair, I can understand GK's main point about whitewashing being a problem to some, but if you blackwash it would be allowed.

More hot takes:
  • St. Nicholas was a f*cking boss. Way cooler than the fat elf in crushed red velvet that Coke uses to sell diabeetus.
  • It wasn't that long ago that Gaels and Latins weren't considered "white" either:

Why does the USA TODAY say that the Turkish attacker said 'God is Great'

The attacker shouted "Allahu Akbar," Arabic for "God is great."....but not God is great

Did you guys see the "Dear White Men" video that @MTVNews tweeted?

I can't embed from my phone, but it's a real treat. It's suggested New Year's resolutions for white men.

Could you imagine if there was a "Dear Black Men" video?

The same reason that they only mention the race of a criminal if the criminal is white. They want to associate this with "religion" generally, including with Christianity, rather than with Islam.

Could you imagine if this was 20 years ago, and MTV was still relevant?
