Unless the balloon was filled with pepper spray, residue spray on a balloon isn't going to cause that kind of reaction.

Maybe not. But the crowd had just been sprayed quite a bit. She very likely had been sprayed shortly before the exchange.

I agree in concept, but China isn't our country. The NBA is an American institution. We are guests when we go to other countries and we are going there to spread the image of the NBA. It's completely different than responding to domestic issues. Not playing in China doesn't do anything to respond to their human rights issues, nor does it effect the NBA. Domestic issues have direct implications on their brand within the US. I don't mean this as an endorsement of their decision (although I do agree with it), rather I'm just pointing out that the two situations are apples and oranges in my opinion.

"We" as a nation are not sending the NBA to China, the NBA is going on its own in the hopes of making money. If the NBA doesn't feel they could make money doing what is effectively marketing their product they would not go to China.

Question, did you feel the same about international sports boycott of South African?

The Royal "we", dude. I'm not saying you packed up Kevin Durant's draws and flew him personally to China.

Not sure if this should go here, or the ESPN thread, but anyway, ESPN is now trumpeting HALF of a quote from Michael Jordan about recent events.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Why would you Tweet this quote & cut it off before he condemned cowardly police shootings too? <a href="https://t.co/VAUEVDhfHe">https://t.co/VAUEVDhfHe</a></p>— Clay Travis (@ClayTravis) <a href="https://twitter.com/ClayTravis/status/757608851982192640">July 25, 2016</a></blockquote>

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">King of a big deal that Jordan condemned police shootings & police being shot in the same quote. Yet <a href="https://twitter.com/espn">@ESPN</a> only publicizes one. Why?</p>— Clay Travis (@ClayTravis) <a href="https://twitter.com/ClayTravis/status/757609605044301824">July 25, 2016</a></blockquote>

I see both sides in his quote on ESPN. His statement was incredible, and displays the mindset we should all strive for IMO.

It wasn't that his original quote wasn't complete, it was that "The Undefeated" only used half of the quote, in order to skew Jordan's words.

I get it, and I'm not surprised... My Yep was to Jordan's overall stance on things...

The Undefeated article had the full quote now, maybe they changed it.
I believe the actual article at The Undefeated was correct from the beginning. The thing that was incomplete was @TheUndefeated's Tweet.

Ok. I understand now. Was puzzled at first, because MJ's stance read in my mind as "every single one of us needs to get our shit together," and that is awesome IMO.

Unless I totally missed something he didn't even say anything radical or worth quoting, though he did fail to take the dumb, Chris Rock-like stance that, "White People have no clue because they're never harmed by police"... its that what everyone is in arms about???

At a local level, I think something like this could be a good thing. It allows people to see the good side of each other, while addressing some of the needs of others. It's completely voluntary, and it brings different people together. On a large scale, it would be a GIANT conduit for abuse.

It can change local perceptions of each other. Change enough local perceptions and the national perception is logically bound to follow. People would have to treat it like Craigslist, though. It could be used for a lot of bad juju.

Not if it's race-based. When it's framed as white people as the givers and black people as the receivers, it's explicitly racist. The noble goals you're describing would also allow for successful black people to help out poor white people, white people helping white people, and black people helping black people. As it's structured, this is built around guilt, not generosity.

The fact that she explicitly says it's for guilt and to "make up for last week's microaggressions" is my problem. That assigns a monetary value to being offended by something that isn't offensive.

What wiz said. You can't call something "Reparations" and think that it will bring anyone together.
