Some decently factual ones:

You have to be kidding me. This is guidance for FACULTY at a public university.

What are some commonly used pronouns?

She, her, hers and he, him, his are the most commonly used pronouns. ---Some people call these "female/feminine" and "male/masculine" pronouns, but many avoid these labels because, for example, not everyone who uses he feels like a "male" or "masculine."

There are also lots of gender-neutral pronouns in use. Here are a few you might hear:
-They, them, theirs (Xena ate their food because they were hungry.) This is is a pretty common gender-neutral pronoun. It can in fact be used in the singular.
-Ze, hir (Xena ate hir food because ze was hungry.)
Ze is pronounced like "zee" can also be spelled zie or xe, and replaces she/he/they.
Hir is pronounced like "here" and replaces her/hers/him/his/they/theirs.

Just my name please! (Xena ate Xena's food because Xena was hungry) Some people prefer not to use pronouns at all, using their name as a pronoun instead.

Never, ever refer to a person as “it” or “he-she” (unless they specifically ask you to.) These are offensive slurs used against trans and gender non-conforming individuals.

All these University Presidents are afraid to grow a spine after what happened in Missouri. Fear of losing their jobs to a mindless hate mob.

I don't see anything particularly wrong with this. All staff and faculty members on a campus are trained to immediately call police if there is ANY potential gun threat.

She's acting a bit butt hurt perhaps (what is wrong with ROTC practicing on campus?), but she should not have been scolded for calling in the potential threat, no matter how minor.

She should be scolded.

A.) I live in Grand Forks(see Location), girlfriend goes to school at the University. They received an email recently telling them to not be alarmed, that the ROTC was going to be doing some stuff in that part of campus.

B.) As a one-time ROTC cadet(wasn't my cup of tea), the "guns" they use in those things are clearly toys, orange tip and all that. I suppose it is possible that the army guys at UND use different ones than the Air Force guys up there(we worked with the UND guys regularly, ours had orange tips).

C.) This dumb waste of space said even though she is now aware that they are doing drills on campus, she will continue to call 9-1-1 every time she sees it happening. There is no reasoning with that sort of person. She deserves all the dumb press she gets. I have very little tolerance for that brand of stupidity.

As an aside to my experience in ROTC, a semester or two after I withdrew from the program, we got a day off school at NDSU because of a bomb threat. Turns out, either the army or the air force kids left out a fake bomb from when they were doing their drills in their building that also hosts some gym classes and someone called it in.

Laws Concerning Carrying Concealed Firearms on Campus in Texas (from armedcampuses.org/texas)
#1 NOTE – NEW LAW TAKES EFFECT IN 2016/2017 AS NOTED BELOW
Effective Dates: August 1, 2016 for all state 4-year colleges and universities; August 1, 2017 for all state 2-year and junior colleges.
The new Texas law will permit individuals who have obtained a concealed handgun license (CHL) to carry their loaded, concealed weapon in college and university buildings. Each college and university may determine certain sensitive areas and buildings* where concealed weapons will continue to be prohibited. Each college and university must publically display campus policies on the official school website, as well as widely publicizing it among correspondence with the institution’s faculty, staff, and students.

University of Texas at Austin to allow students to carry handguns on campus
Students at the University of Texas at Austin will soon be allowed to carry handguns on campus.

University of Texas President Gregory Fenves approved Wednesday the guidelines for gun owners in light of a recently passed state law allowing guns on campuses.
"I have thoroughly reviewed the policy recommendations of the Campus Carry Working Group and decided to adopt them," Fences said. "Under the law, I cannot adopt a policy that has the general effect of excluding licensed concealed handguns from campus."
In 2015, the Republican-led Texas Legislature voted to allow guns within buildings on public college campuses throughout the state.

For New UT-Dallas President, Campus Carry Debate is Personal He was engineering dean at Virginia Tech nine years ago.

The article made it sound like the emails only came out after the incident but considering you and your girlfriend are right in the midst of it all, I will err on the side of you as opposed to a second rate news website, and I definitely agree that if she knows the guns are not real or that it is simply ROTC drilling and she still calls it in she is being dumb, hence my butthurt comment.

It was simply that the article (the way I read it) made it sound as if there was no warning that people might be walking through campus with fake guns, and seeing as she saw the two students through her office window (making it hard to decipher the realness of the situation), I found her calling it in completely understandable and undeserving of scolding.

I see stories like this, and I can't help but kinda generalize it with the mutitude of ridiculousness on campuses. ...are we doing ourselves any good by allowing Public institutions to form these little societies on campus who turn inward to create unrealistic "Utopias" of their campuses instead of spending time in their fields, being better at what we pay them for. Does this kind of shit benefit the students...really?

I've known my share of professors...and most were busy as hell. My chemistry, biology, physics profs were all engaged in building science on wheels vans when they weren't directly engaged in teaching.

computer profs were helping develop shit for DoD or hospitals.

I mean the History and poly sci Profs were writing books, and consulting with DC on real issues...not localized made up shit.

...they were all dedicated professors...engaged in things on campus they thought mattered, but were far more focused on things that impacted their ability to do their damned job to the best of their ability, or to help others with outreach.

I mean WTF do these people do with themselves where they have time to mess with an issue like this...yea great fine, she is such an introvert she doesn't understand ROTC, and called attention to weapon...ok, now go DO SOMETHING OF MERIT for God's sake! Harping on the ROTC because YOU don't think it is necessary is simply wasting everyone's time, and is it improving your education product? Why do people even put up with this?

I understand her calling the first time, but from here on out she will continue to call? She's more than butt hurt. She's outraged that the university didn't immediately disband the ROTC program.

New Orleans student gov. leader says 'right-handed people' need to check their privilege

Lastly, Miner calls on right-handed people to check their privilege, observing that “I didn't realize for a while that nearly everything is structured for convenient use by right[-]handed people, from school supplies to the structure of houses,” and that left-handers often have to deal with discomfort as a result.

“Don't try to silence a left-handed person who complains about scissors hurting their hand or how uncomfortable school desks are to sit in, or the struggle of having dirty hands from writing in pencil,” he advises righties, adding that they should also support increasing the number of left-handed desks in classrooms.

It's funny that the University of North Dakota made its way into this thread and it has nothing to do with the fact that they're the Fighting Sioux.

ETA: Wait, I Googled it. They're the Fighting Hawks now!? Of course they are.

That's a bad thing?

Of course it is.

Oh while that has been brought up, I got some fun stuff to talk about there.

So for years and years they battle to keep this name. Fine by me. I don't care what a school uses as a name. But its decided that they will change the name....and it comes down to Fighting Hawks, Roughriders, or Nodaks. The other two are much more unique obviously, and can be tied into North Dakotan heritage and all that jazz. NOBODY was on team Fighting Hawks, until this gets circulated as the logo they will use.

greenhawk.jpg

Suddenly, these clowns decide that this is the only way to keep their "heritage of honoring the Sioux!" Anyone with a brain knew that there was no way that they could use that logo but of course, it was too late....the damage was done. And now they have the most generic nickname ever...and no logo for the time being. They don't even announce the name at hockey games, just call them "North Dakota" because they didn't like having 11,000 booing everytime they said it.

And of course, the absolute irony of all of this is that no one (of any Native-American ancestry) would want to be called 'Sioux!' Nor would that honor the 'Peoples of the Seven Council Fires.' That of course being that the term is an insult from another peoples, meaning snake tongue, implying that the Lakota are all liars. Exactly : Nadouessioux - 'snake' or 'enemy'.

So in effect this is like whites trying to have a conversation about how they have rhythm.

Kind of like this scene immortalized in celluloid :

Czerwiec went so far as to leave an angry voicemail with the university ROTC office in the minutes following her call to 911 and subsequent phone call with a UND police officer.

"There is no reason in this day and age that you need to do these exercises in the middle of the quad," she said in part of the voicemail recording. "Do them somewhere else. I shouldn't have to work in a terrorized environment."

She said she regrets using profanity in the heat of the moment.

"But I do stand by the things I said in that message, which was that they had scared me unnecessarily and I didn't think it was a good idea for them to be doing the drills on campus while classes were going on," she said. "That I thought that was creating unnecessary stress and fear."

I guess the ROTC is creating a terrorizing environment...good God. I love stupid people because they make me feel better about myself.
