Their all-star QB threw for something like 92 yards - that should tell you something about our decisions to A) keep it on the ground early and B) Kizer's ability to chuck it around the yard effectively to get us back in it.

321 yards through the air + 60 yards rushing, in that slop, with at least 5 HUGE drops by WRs.... not sure what more we could have asked of him. Cut those drops in half and he very possibly eclipses 400 yards and goes down in ND lore.

Would have been nicer if their team had fallen on their face

This took me by surprise - I was listening to Taylor Zarzour and Greg McElroy's show this morning on Sirius XM College Sports. McElroy said if ND and Clemson played again on a neutral field, he would pick ND by a touchdown. Pretty big vote of confidence. He also picked ND to win this weekend but Temple to cover (with the line at Temple -11).

Needed some time to digest this loss. It still stings. A lot of my thoughts have been discussed, but here they are anyways:

-You can't spot a good team 14 points to start a game. See Oklahoma 2013. The defense looked completely out of sync to start the game. Very strange considering they had started every previous game forcing a 3-and-Out.

-When Clemson stacks the box and ND's OL can't get a push, it's time start throwing to get them to back off. Look at CJ's splits in the first half. It's beyond horrific. Yet series after series they insisted on forcing the run. All it did was put Kizer in a tough spot...

-Kizer played about as good you could've hoped given the circumstances. His WRs let him down often. The drops were killer. Corey Robinson needs to be benched until he starts showing more consistency and dependability. Idk what happened, but he was clutch at times last year, and now it's damn near pointless to have him in the game.

-ND had SIX fumbles (lost three) and an interception. Clemson had one, I think, and recovered it. They did have one interception. (Per OFD podcast...I didn't track these stats). It's not bad luck, it's lack of focus.

-Fumble aside, I'm so glad they finally made the switch on kickoff returns. I've been saying Amir needs to be taken out of that role for two seasons now. It finally happened. I'm looking forward to what Sanders brings. That fumble was brutal, but overall, this is a great move.

-Defense could've been better, but they could've been worse as well. Tackling, especially in the backfield or along the LOS needs to improve. Clemson had four scoring drives and two of those were a direct result of a short field by the hands of ND's special teams (poor punt, fumbled kickoff). Once they settled in after the first half of the first quarter, they played well enough to win. They got stops when they needed to down the stretch. The offense just struggled mightily until the fourth. That's unfortunate.

-The 2-point conversion(s). Conversion #1: The chart says go for it in the fourth. But it was literally 40 seconds into the quarter. A little common sense needs to be applied here. It was wrong to go for it, imo. BUT it's moot because the play worked, Robinson just didn't execute it (see earlier rant). Conversion #2: At first I questioned the play call. But after re-watching it, the OL just got blown up too quickly. Elmer and Martin are extremely underwhelming when up against decent competition. The hole was there, Kizer went for it, but it closed too quickly. End of game.

Look, shit happens. This loss was a joint effort (coaches and players)....and they still almost won. What I'm most pissed about is that it took Clemson playing basically a flawless game and ND playing their worst game of the season for this outcome to happen...and it did. That's tough to swallow. I loved the fight in our guys. But there are no moral victories for me.

This team needs to regroup and make a statement over the next two games. (Is it unsettling to anyone else that this is similar to last year in that there was a gigantic let down in the season's top game with Navy to follow? I hope they change the script this year.)

LOL. A lot different then when I went to college. A few years back, I moved a former girlfriend's daughter into college here in Cali. My exact quote was this is not college this is Club Med. Pilates studios with yogurt bars, etc. I wonder how any student ever studies with all of the fun activities they have access to at the schools.

This is how college football dies, with a Twitter video to a player's only putt-putt course.

Yeah, it's not good. They may as well have a player's only dorm attached to it, and perhaps a player's only bar for the 21 year olds. Maybe a player's only Sorority/brothel so the guys can bust a nut from time to time.

Took my turn watching the replay on ESPNU, because I love pain.

Man did this team respond in the fourth quarter. Man was Kizer poised in the pocket. Man did he use his mobility nearly flawlessly when it mattered most.

Other thoughts:

1. If Kizer is experienced enough to hit check-downs, rather than playing like a freshman riding the comeback and making a few mistakes, ND wins the game. This year, I think he'll know how/when to find those check-downs. I think the job is his.

2. My god, why didn't we hit Chris Brown on more crossing routes over the course of his career, or last season at the very least? I know Clemson is essentially in a prevent shell the whole fourth, but Chris torched them by crossing underneath, and nearly housed two separate crossing patterns in shit conditions. I'd love to see BK and co. implement some west coast and/or air-raid principles to help utilize the middle of the field better. I think the staff did Breezy an injustice by not taking advantage of Fuller over top and letting Chris fly around underneath.

3. If Kizer starts, and we get the more-experienced "4th Quarter Against Clemson" version of DeShone on a consistent basis, ND will be in the playoffs.

4. If we get "4th Quarter Against Clemson" version of Joe Schmidt all of last season, rather than just flashes, our defense might have been greatly improved simply on that merit. He was crashing through holes and causing general chaos, really making things happen with the old "Help Is On the Way" mantra. Kept that defense in-line and got them off the field when it was most needed, simply by being physical and letting the rest of the D collapse once he put himself in place.

5. Both two-point conversions were the right calls, which is comforting to see after having some distance from the game and watching it without the attached emotion. You have to go for 2 on the first one to make it a two-score game. Even if you don't get it, you have plenty of time to adjust your strategy to account for three possessions rather than two. You know where you stand. The second one was the right call in terms of the play, I think. Clemson just did their job very well. I'd imagine BK has put that same play away for our greatest need in the future, except maybe with a pass option attached.
