New S&P+ is out, and NC State has some surprisingly questionable defensive numbers...

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | 2017 NCAA FOOTBALL S&P+ RATINGS
FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | 2017 NCAA S&P+ RATINGS, DEFENSE

The Wolfpack checks in at 53rd with a run defense rank of 33rd and pass defense rank of 74th.

For contrast, here are the other notable opponents ND has played (rush // pass):
Georgia -- 1st // 3rd
Michigan State -- 5th // 13th
USC -- 39th // 31st
Boston College -- 94th // 17th

On paper, NC State is probably close to a healthier USC against the run but is by far the worst Power 5 pass defense Wimbush will have faced. Too bad it's going to be cold/rainy. Also makes you really wonder if the narrative about NC State's defense is a little bit misleading? Their offense is rated much more favorably than their defense... in fact, it'll be overall the best ND has faced so far (USC and Georgia both compare favorably in some categories).

Best updated stat? ND has the #1 most efficient rushing offense in the country. Passing offense sadly checks in at #63... still very much so a work in progress.

Yup. Very similar to a few points I made about NCSt. I think we roll.

I don't think it will be rainy come game time per current forecast. Looks like stuff will clear out early. But who knows what Mother Nature will do. I hope it dries out so we can run down their throats.

This game last year embodied the problems with old CBK, I hope and believe new CBK has done some self scouting or taken a personal inventory, and has realized it can be fun winning by beating teams into submission and not just slinging it all over the field. I think he realized he was being a little hard of head and this game is one he wants badly and I would not want to be in a NC State jersey come Saturday.

Jones had a couple of nice runs against USC, but does anyone else think that Macintosh should be the #3 back?

No after seeing jones healthy I can understand why he is number 2. He blocks really well. Thing that scares me against nc state is in the last 4 games teams have no sacks against them

I dont, and it doesn’t have anything to do with him personally. He’s gonna be a great player for us. But Jones is the more physical back and physical backs need reps. It’s difficult to bring a downfield runner off the bench and expect him to dominate at the line of scrimmage if he isn’t mentally prepared to do so. Whether Jones or Macintosh, the third back is going to be situational. Use Jones as the third back in games where you think the reps will prepare him in that game for getting the physical yard. Get Macintosh the reps when we are in a shoot out atmosphere where we need to roll out slasher after slasher.

In other words... an embarrassment of riches.

Seriously why is everyone so high on these guys? They've beaten mediocre teams by moderate margins. We win and win big.

No. Macintosh has played well but not sure what he does that Dexter Williams doesn't do better. Tony Jones blocks well and catches well and can reliably plow a couple yards against a stacked box, none of which is Macintosh's strength. Healthy, Dex and Tony are RB2 and 2A, and Deon is 4.

Because NC State has a history of playing upset specials and ND has a history of dropping games to inferior opponents.
