In general, I really do think it was the layoff and conditioning that is affecting these guys. Reason I say that is because there were just too many players that seemed to be struggling, that usually don't, for it to be anything else. Lacey was pretty poor in gap control. Jayson A. wasn't getting much penetration. White was quite bad. Hayes looked slow and out of control, at times. So, I wouldn't take away too much from that except for a few things.
1. I was keyed in on White and Bauer a lot of the afternoon. It's a small sample size but it was pretty clear to me that Bauer is ascending and at the very least, White, has plateaued. I'd like to see Bauer earn the start and only work White in if Bauer isn't consistent with his assignments and keys.
2. On Buck, I'll probably re-watch some of the game to get a better idea as I was really focused on the MLB's. My initial reaction was Simon flashed early but then seemed to disappear later. And Liufau seemed to play a little hesitant. I think he's still a little light for Buck on early down work. I think Kiser has to be worked into the mix with at least a 50% of the snaps providing he's practicing during the week.
3. Daelin Hayes needs to concede some snaps. His effort is there but he's just slow and not very violent with his hands. Nobody is going to confuse Ade with Jadaveon Clowney but he fires off the ball and is violent with his hands. OL feel him. Daelin is 270 lbs. but doesn't play like it. So, now he's a 270 edge rusher who isn't quick like his 240-250 counterparts but isn't playing with the requisite punch/power that you'd expect from a 270 DE. Through 3 games he has no sacks or TFL. Last year through 3 he had 3 TFL and 1 sack. I was worried about his increasing weight over the last 2 years and I think now it's finally time to realize he shouldn't be playing at this weight.
