Why the hell would we not have hired Fleck this year then? The answer is either (a) he is not a viable option or (b) they didn't want to eat an extra $5 million of the buyout.

Because they didn't. If Orgeron gets canned and you came to LSU, would you be happy to have Aranda? Or would you say, i don't care what your prior success is, i want to bring in my guys...? Probably not. You would probably see that as a more enticing reason to go to that school because you would have one hell of a football coach commanding one side of the ball. Elko can fit that bill.

I guess to put it in simple terms:

2016: We are 4-8 but $5 million is too much to give up considering the coaching market.
2017: We are 8-4 so $5 million is way too much to give up considering fans aren't that pissed at us.

You need to start posting IMO, because I do not think that was the reason Kelly was brought back. Its your opinions and sources that say that which doesn't have a link or any backing...

If Kelly wins 9 games next year hes back IMO, and I don't think the buyout will save him if he only wins 7 or less.....

Are "de-escalators" a thing? Pardon me if that's far from the proper term. What I mean: Do coaching contracts have clauses or language in them that reduce buyouts per certain conditions, such as winning less than 18 games over the last two years?

Yes, and offset language. With very well might be what's getting ironed out right now. In pretty much every negotiation both sides want security, but neither side wants to give security. When you get out-leverage you end up with Weis and Kelly deals, when you miscalculate you end up with Nick Saban leaving your program for the Miami Dolphins and then coming back to your divisional rival and owning you.

But that's why ADs get paid the big bucks to handle these situations correctly.

Loy on 247 saying that he got a text that ND is strongly considering promoting Elston to DC. He said he doesn't necessarily buy it, but it's from one of his sources.

If they promote Elston I will lose it. This staff needs as much shake up as possible, and so far the only shake up has been that we lost arguably our best coach (Sanford), and our worst coach (Booker).

Promoting within just keeps more of the 4-8 staff. We need some change. Not a complete wipe out, but holy Christ I will lose it if Elston is our DC when we have a guy in the fold who produces top 20 defenses with top 90 talent.

The only way I can see that happening is if something fell through with Elko.If Kelly voluntarily pulled back at the 11th hour to hire Elston though, I will totally lose my shit.

Either scenario points to the fact that Kelly should've been fired though.

I would be highly disappointed as well, but lets not forget we wiped out BVG, and as much as u say u are returning core of a 4-8 coaching staff, u are only returning core of a staff that went 10-3 two years ago and was a couple plays away from making the playoff..

I do agree with GK in the fact that "If the plan is to give Kelly one more year to make or break it" then I wouldn't want the university to tie themselves to a guy for four years guranteed

If BK promotes Elston when Elko is an option, he's literally a moron who sounds good in front of a camera. There's a lot of circumstantial evidence already showing he's a moron, but this would be the final straw for me. I don't think he's this dumb, btw, but holy hell nothing would surprise me.

Longo still has a job, right?

I believe your final straw was long ago. Forget your password for a few days.

New update from your boy on 247.

As of 2:51pm CST...

Loy got a text from a source he considers very reliable, and is 90% sure Elko is getting the job, but they are essentially dotting the Is, crossing the Ts, and making sure that is in order rather than rushing to make it public.

and then this leaked info will sit as ND pursues a 2 month background check

...no source, just going by past history (even though that is not a guarantee of future performance tm)

I heard from a source that BK sneezed and Elko didn't say God bless you. It'll be Elston then.

Notre Dame Mike Elko Mike Elston defensive coordinator

per 3pm report Elko is still in negotiations...per 1 source its his to lose

Elston had a great interview and presentation along w/ players support

Should never have come to this...should have been dealt with. Looks ridiculous, and now you got players invested a certain way...captains at that. Makes it real awkward when the players have to welcome Elko.

You either gut up and give the Job to Elston, or you say no, and THEN go outside. This was done ass-backward...WTF???

These two posts from about 3 hours apart shows exactly what kind of a douche Loy is. "A source says they are strongly considering Elston" then a couple hours later "a source says 90% sure its Elko". Is his source a magic 8-ball or a ouija board?

No...not really. Just venting.

You think so? I think ND should try to hire the best candidate. If there are a couple of guys they like better than Elston, he can wait. He know and the players know he score since they all went through recruiting.

And saying a coach is popular and has player support him is not the the same as saying the players are committed to playing to Elston and will be really devastated if it doesnt happen.

He's reporting what his sources tell him. You realize there can be more than one source, right? So if one of his sources says something, and it contradicts with another, you want him to ignore it? That's the dumbest.
