Siap. A 3 year deal according to twitter posts I'm seeing.

Bilal is the softest player relative to talent of all time. Watching him lollygag around on defense, I'd be surprised if elko can do anything with him but I hope he turns into a player.

You did see Studstill and Nick Coleman play this year right?

Also saw on twitter. Don't remember who but I follow the usual suspects. But I heard elko can choose his own staff as well

That appears to be the standard if you want to get a top notch coordinator. LSU just gave new OC Matt Canada a three year deal.

Yup. It works out well for both sides. How Aranda was so easily kept at LSU this year.

Less of a deal, and he can easily leave if Kelly gets fired. Longer deal, and the school might get stuck eating a reasonably large chunk of buyout money. 3-year deal everyone wins in this situation.

Good get by Jack and BK.

Withholding full-throated WAHOOO until I see the composition of the staff.

I read up on Elko's 4-2-5 on 247 and it sounds pretty nasty. The linebackers line up on the line of scrimmage with lots of gap overloads and Mke/Sam twists. There's a rover position that I'm sure Tranquil could thrive in. Pressure is dialed up all over making it impossible for the O to know where it's coming from. Very aggressive. Has flexibility to apply the 4-3 when needed. This is the type of D we need that will allow our athletes make plays. The Mime - Nyles- is the lynchpin of the defense and 247 says expect him to blitz a lot and have a BIG year.

Hoping they keep all defensive staff, but move Elston, maybe to ST's. He stays on as RC, maybe he gets a designation like AHC or something. Elko brings in Clark Lea as LB's coach. This would be my ideal.

Too much turnover and I worry we lose the defensive recruits. The recruits love Tood Lyght. And Ewell seems tied to Gilmore. I wouldn't mess with that.

Plus, I think Lyght did a good job once BVG was gone and Gilmore has quite the track record, last year not included.

I agree about everyone except Gilmore. He has to go

I was under the impression that he was bringing DL coach Dave Cohen with him. I think they have history together. Elston would remain LB coach. Our current LB's love Elston and he did a good job with them.

I would like to see 2 holdovers though. I hope there is a spot for Elston and Lyght on his staff.

What exactly is gignores track record? Didn't he come from unc where they give up 40 on the reg? And don't tell me it's because some 3 star once developed into a nfl player, that happens everywhere under everyone's watch from time to time. Sorry if I'm coming off sparky but Ivery never heard good things about gilmore.

Fox Sport's take on new coaches....
Said this about his move to WKU...

Grade: C+

Sanford wanted out of Notre Dame and made an excellent pitch to WKU, which is a spot where he *should* have immediate success. The offensive transition should be seamless, but is Sanford ready to helm a program with expectations?

C+.... Wanted out?? Can anyone elaborate???

He seems to be most likely, Cohen that is. Didn't say the highest probability, with Lea, said what I was hoping for.

Seems like a decent hire, on board.

Agreed. I had never heard of him until the past day or 2, but after reading some, I'm encouraged. It seems BK likes to hire people he has worked with to some degree, do he and Elko have any connection, ever?

Elko's Defense against us last year held us to 282 total yards, 98 of which came on a single play (Josh Adam's huge TD run). They sacked us 3 times and held us to 111 yards passing.

If not for a goal line stand that was quickly followed by Adams big run and a pick six by Trumbetti, we are looking at a VERY close game. At the time of the game, we were in the #4 spot in the CFP rankings while Wake Forest was 3-6.

I don't know if any of this is true...but he'd be a dumb ass to stay.

1) He is ready for a small HC gig.
2) His story was hot...he took a backup who wasn't sure he wanted to be a football player anymore and turned him into an NFL prospect...the story was starting to frey around the edges in 16, as DK has some warts, and it is only going to get worse before it gets better, as DK will struggle mightily, and publicly for the next two years if he has to start for an NFL team.

The DK story was still beneficial. Iron was hot...he struck.

Can someone make an argument For Gilmore's track record? I wouldn't bat an eye if he wasn't extended and Elko brought someone new. But maybe I'm underselling gilmore.

So with the defensive roster that we will have for the 2017 season and the first season under DC Mike Elko and his 4-2-5 scheme, what would the starting defense look like?

WDE: Daelin Hayes
3 Tech: Jerry Tillery??
NG: Daniel Cage
SDE: Jay Hayes/Jon Bonner

Linebackers: Nyles Morgan and one of Coney/Bilal/Martini

CB: Julian Love
FS: Devin Studstill
SS: Jalen Elliot
CB: Shaun Crawford
Rover: Drue Tranquill

Evan Sharpley had an excellent article last night that did a good job breaking down how Elko's defense works. He said don't be surprised if we see pro typical cornerbacks playing safety since coverage is at a premium in the 4-2-5. Does this mean we could see a guy like Nick Watkins or someone else get moved over? Also, he said this defense benefits hybrid guys lie Tranquill, Morgan, and Perry because they will be playing closer to the LOS instead of in coverage every play.

He has had success coaching some individual players to some career years such as Kareem Martin (21.5 TFL and 11.5 sacks) as North Carolina. Coached two first round draft selections out of Illinois. One of them Whitney Mercilus, lead the nation in sacks with 16. Also coached All-American Terrill Byrd at Cincy.

I am not saying we should give him another shot but he hasn't had anyone except Sheldon Day for one year that has shown to get pressure on a QB consistently. Romeo Okwara I feel improved tremendously under one year with him. Hoping maybe the young freshman D.Hayes, J. Okwara, and Kareem could show flashes next year if Gilmore is given another chance. If not, it looks like he has had some extended time on Special Teams in his tenure.
