I suspect Kelly will move Jeff Quinn into OC slot. I hope that's not the case. He needs an outside hire IMO. Sterling Gilbert maybe?

Whoever gets hired as the OC is a bit irrelevant since its been reported that Kelly is calling the plays. And Kelly has a habit of hiring coaches who has experience coaching with Kelly; so, Quinn has a very strong chance of getting a promotion

I didn't know there was a connection to Cohen. I know he was well respected as the Hofstra head coach here before they shut down the program. I'm pretty excited about this hire and think it's the right one. I think he's going to be able to squeeze a lot out of some of the current players. I like that reports are he's not overly scheme heavy but puts his athletes in spots to make plays.

So with the defensive roster that we will have for the 2017 season and the first season under DC Mike Elko and his 4-2-5 scheme, what would the starting defense look like?

WDE: Daelin Hayes
3 Tech: Jerry Tillery??
NG: Daniel Cage
SDE: Jay Hayes/Jon Bonner

Linebackers: Nyles Morgan and one of Coney/Bilal/Martini

CB: Julian Love
FS: Devin Studstill
SS: Jalen Elliot
CB: Shaun Crawford
Rover: Drue Tranquill

Evan Sharpley had an excellent article last night that did a good job breaking down how Elko's defense works. He said don't be surprised if we see pro typical cornerbacks playing safety since coverage is at a premium in the 4-2-5. Does this mean we could see a guy like Nick Watkins or someone else get moved over? Also, he said this defense benefits hybrid guys lie Tranquill, Morgan, and Perry because they will be playing closer to the LOS instead of in coverage every play.

Perhaps it's better suited in a "Bold Prediction" thread later on, but I'm calling my shot: Isaiah Robertson is gonna be the truth from day one, acting as the true coverage safety that we hoped for in Studstill as a FS. Studstill will slide over to SS, and Elliot will be the third man in to keep them both fresh.

From Wiltfong,

He expects Elston to move to the d-line (good move) and Elko will bring Clark Lea with him to coach linebackers. Also, he wouldn't be surprised if Brian Polian comes back to coach special teams.

Gilmore gone or moved to ST role?

This is what I dont understand. Why would you move someone to a position that he doesnt know about nor had experience with as a player or coach? Someone said Elston to DL yet he is a LB coach. Why would you not take the money you are paying Gilmore and get a ST coach from a school that has great ST year in year out? What about that ST coach from VT? VT always has great ST and have for the last decade.

I mean, why keep someone around if they arent an expert there? BK should be much more worried about his career and less about taking care of friends.

EDIT: Elston started as a DL coach at ND, including coaching our BEST defensive line in '12.

Gilmore has twice acted as special teams coordinator for places he's coached.
More changes for the Notre Dame coaching staff

Paul longo is EXPECTED to move into a different role
Elston to DLINE
Clark Lea -LB coach

and WON'T be surprised if Brian Polian is named SP coach
This could be great. If you need to use the Universities money to fund your buddy, get him in an analyst role or something away from the players. He cannot be our S/C coach anymore.

I would be happy with most any of the SECs S&C coaches. Always a physical conference.

We'd have to sell the golden dome. We don't need THE best S/C, we just can't have one of the worst. I'll take a ~ top 15 S/C and we'll be fine.

Some coaches are just great teachers. And they understand football, so they can quickly pick up the nuances of different specialties and pass that knowledge on to kids. Lou Holtz ran a completely different offense, from Tony Rice to Rick Mirer. Just because a mechanic specializes in BMWs doesn't mean that he couldn't quickly become a fine mechanic on another manufacturer's product(s).

Who are you referring to? Hard to tell since you didn't use the quote function on this site.

I was referring to you, ya dingleberry fairy.

Irishcop, I'm just giving you a hard time brother.

I get you. Im just saying, if you were a very struggling school with nationwide eyes on you because you havent met expectations, why would you promote a middle school math teacher to be the new HS chemistry teacher just because he gets along good with students and is pretty smart? Or would you get a HS Chemistry teacher who had a lot of experience and a proven track record of success?

Assuming sufficient funds to do so of course.

Wait, wasn't everyone calling for Elston's head last time he was DLine coach? Am I missing something?

I thought so, but apparently time heals all and we're now giving him credit again for having a DLine full of NFL talent in 2012.

If Im Gilmore, Im pissed ten ways til tuesday. Guy gets canned for a dude who already failed and was the reason you were brought in. All because hes buddies with the HC?

That's not what I said. The more appropriate analogy to what I said is that you would promote the middle school History teacher who has an already proven track record of raising students' averages, no matter the subject. If your job is on the line, better to go with a known winner that you already have a positive working relationship with, than to bring in someone who might be a prima donna and disrupt the entire staff.

I am pretty positive Elston is being kept because he is one of the best recruiting coordinators in the country and the players LOVE him.. I don't think he is only being kept because he is "buddies" with the HC.. He is valuable to this team
