Watched The Legend of Tarzan (2016) and it was better than I was expecting. Not the general origin story, but Tarzan having adapted to modern society back in England, goes on a journey back to the Congo. Generally well acted, and Margot Robbie is gorgeous as Jane.

I watched "Mystic River." I had seen it once a while back and my opinion still holds. It's a terrific film that gets thrown off the rails at the end. The speech that the wife of Sean Penn's character gives at the end is so bizarre, basically absolving him of any guilt he should feel over the terrible mistake he made because his heart was in the right place. The movie ends with it seeming like everyone will live happily ever after, except Celeste, the wife of Tim Robbins' character. It was such a tone deaf head scratcher of an ending that didn't jibe with the rest of the movie to that point.

The film is supposed to be tragic. If it ended with justice or puppy dogs and ice cream then would it still be a tragedy?

Watched Southpaw the other day and enjoyed it immensely. Not your typical rags to riches boxing movie. But rather a fall from grace with redemption. For you western fans. I also watched Forsaken and enjoyed it.

Watched "Passengers" last night. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence are trapped on a failing space station as it travels to a new world... but they're awake too early during the 120-year journey, and have no idea what to do to fix the problems, and cant get to the crew to wake any of them up.

First third of the movie was really good, second third didn't live up to the first as the problem/solution kind of happened too fast/easy IMO, and the very end could have been brilliant, but kind of sucked, instead.

I was entertained, and might watch it again in the future if only for the visuals and funny moments, but I won't go searching for it to watch.

Kind of agree. The beginning wasn't bad, but there was a lot of leeway on how they managed to get things done. The bartender was the best part, yet why was he the only robot of that type on the ship?

I'd imagine because it was the only service that wasn't fully-automated or on-demand.

Now, as to IF the alcohol couldn't somehow be fully automated or on-demand while simultaneously preventing abuse, like a limit on the access band or whatever, that's another argument.

I'd also imagine it would be something to do with the fact that they were only supposed to be awake on the ship for the last month (or four?) of the trip, so they didn't really have a need for more AI robots, as people wouldn't have been frequenting the service like Pratt's character was.

I also agree on the "leeway" thing, re: getting things accomplished.

Even early on, when Pratt was hacking everything so he wouldn't go crazy, I was kind of left like, "why isn't everything made hack-proof like the door to the crew pods?"

Just saw Hacksaw Ridge. Very well done. The story itself is incredible. Not enough words to describe the heroics of Desmond Doss. Very few men like that ever walk the earth.

I just watched it a couple weeks ago with my wife. Very good movie and Doss was a baller. Deserved that CMH a few times over.

Watched Bridge Of Spies this past weekend. I really liked it. Hanks is hard to beat.

For fun, I watched The Rutles last night for the first time in more than 10 years. Monty Python/SNL mockumentary spoof of the Beatles from about 1977. My wife hated it, but I've always thought it was a cute movie.

Just saw it. Co-sign.

The rare sequel that surpasses the first. I think a lot had to do with better jokes from Rocket, and a good development of Drax's dry humor.

Also, the story was deeper, and way more brutal and emotional, without ever losing that specific Guardians feel that kept it light at the right times.

Could not disagree more. It was funny and the music was good but the rest was just mediocre. The entire movie was an extended attempt at character development. I didn't feel any "threat" to the Galaxy until the very end and splitting the Guardians up so much was weird.

I can go into more detail later but I was really disappointed.

I thought this was one of the more effective aspects of the movie, at least for my tastes. It was nice to see each character get their shine individually rather than mostly just Pratt, and I thought the point was kind of to show "this is what happens when the Guardians are apart. They still have individual weaknesses and issues, and sometimes they must overcome these issues on their own." I liked it because usually when movies try to do that, things feel disjointed. I didn't get that from this movie. It felt like it was all appropriate but still consistent with the overall issue, which was "importance of family."

And the individual issues were reconciled in the last 30 minutes and the plot resolution, where they all came together and did their parts.

I also think the movie kind of foreshadowed and poked fun at the idea of "Guardians of the Galaxy" and a lack of "Galaxy in Danger," as the characters kept talking about "guarding the galaxy" right out in the open, even though they were really just running from Rocket's contrived issue.

Also, I got a few good laughs from the first film, but I belly-laughed a couple of times during the new one, and even had tears of laughter at one point.

"Deja Vu." It was okay. Denzel Washington is great and the time warp car chase was cool. Entertaining, but nothing special.

Four months, but that's a decent amount of time when you're awake.

Watched Traitor with Don Cheadle. Pretty good terrorist thriller type movie.

Agree.... Saw it last night with the family. There were multiple moments that were both hilarious and very sad. My kid took one moment particularly bad and was really crying. He loved the movie and was totally into it throughout.

I found myself getting emotional about characters I didnt like before and I liked how the story played out.

"Tears of the Sun." The director of Training Day and Bruce Willis taking themselves very seriously with a "Black Hawk Down" type of story. Very grim, brutal, and melodramatic. Not particularly compelling. We've seen the same story done many times before and done much better. But, hey, Monica Bellucci with increasingly more buttons coming unbuttoned as the movie goes on, so that's a plus.

Agreed. I liked it, but it wasn't one of the best in the genre.

"Cat People." A moody film from back when RKO got into making low budget horror flicks to compete with the studios that were pumping out vampire and "Frankenstein" knock offs. Very well made, terrific lighting, suggestive rather than in your face scares. I like how movies from that era could be low budget but still look great. Something about black and white.

Just watched Split.

Awesome acting from McAvoy. The part where the chaos is triggered and the hoard each come for the light was just an amazing display of his talent. Switching gears like that, so seamlessly, was almost unbelievable. I found myself wondering how many takes it took to get that scene perfect like it was.

Also, didn't "appreciate" the twist in real time, but it was obvious that I needed to Google something as soon as the credits rolled. Now I gotta go check out more material.

I finally saw "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" for the 1st time. So many of those horror movies from the 70s and 80s don't hold up but this one deserves it's status as a classic. Very creepy and graphic, but it doesn't rely solely on brutality and gore to keep your attention.

Alien: Covenant - tonight at 7:30 if anyone cares to join me. I've been waiting since Prometheus for the rest of the story on the alien evolution.

I really can't wait to see what else Ridley does with the series.

Prometheus didn't get the credit it deserved, IMO. I thought it was an awesome way to build the idea.

Does it follow that "Alien: Covenant" will undoubtedly lead directly into the beginning of "Alien," or are there pieces that they can still fit in?

I don't think they'll regressively build the storyl. I think now that it's begun, they'll move forward in a mostly linear fashion with some time gaps to leave it open for imagination.

I suppose they could further branch out and explore the universe where the "Alien" we've come to know isn't found, rather a host of other mysterious creatures lurk in the shadows. I'd enjoy that as well but they'd need a storyline to tie it together.

And I agree about Prometheus, people were down on it but I really enjoyed it.

With Pirates 5 coming out this weekend, my wife and I will be re-watching the series this week. I can't figure out the critic (and audience) hate for this franchise. No, it's not Citizen Kane, but it's fun as hell and nowhere near the offensive badness of Transformers.
