This has got to be about the money. Wonder if it was Jack or BK that wouldnt consider the increase. I can see Jack putting it on BK and BK balking...

Well T&M threw a boat at LSU's coordinator and he stayed. Im sure they threw the same boat at Elko and he bit.

ND and BK are a bunch of friggin idiots. Im sure neither would match their absurd offer

Way to go guys

BK has his flaws, but I’m not sure how you fault him here...

If true, I wonder how close to A&M's offer, we were willing to go?

What are you supposed to do? I suppose you could make the argument that we can pay whatever it takes, but it feels wrong to be paying so much. How many scholarships would Weis' contract have bought us?

Feels wrong? It doesn't feel wrong to have incredibly high academic standards and other challenges unique to all things ND. We should pay more than all the easier football factories because of those challenges. We have the money, and should never lose a bidding war for a quality coach that fits in.

Why would BK balk? It's not his money. If anything, it's in his interest to drive up the coaching market in general.

Without football, ND is a school that literally NO ONE gives a shit about. How the administration doesn't see that and pay their meal ticket accordingly is beyond me.

It is increasingly clear that some programs are willing to "play for keeps" and go all in... and Notre Dame is not.

LSU has zero money... in fact, they have crushing debt right now... and they swung $2.5mil/year and $10 million for a coordinator to prevent this from happening.

ND has a gigantic endowment and isn't willing to dip into the billions they have to prevent the same thing from happening... and moreover, Swarbrick is too dumb to write a contract that has a large enough reciprocal buyout that it makes it prohibitive for someone to leave.

It's been pretty clear for a long time that ND isn't really interested in doing what it takes to win.

This response is not hype enough. Turn up.

Well the reason I ask is, if we came even remotely close, then I'll lose just as much respect for Elko as I do for Swarbrick. This is a classless move on his part, completely F'ing our program if the money was even close. Not sure what that looks like so hard for me to say.

Something absolutely needs to be done about salary caps. It completely destroys the parity in the sport when you have a group of cultish oil billionaires who will throw any amount of money necessary to hire the best coaches.

ISD confirmed with an ND source that this is happening. So it's confirmed from both sides now. SIAP.

ND just lost Dave Ballou from SC program too. I want to cry. But will probably just scream into a pillow.

This gets back to the perennial debate over whether ND can maintain its values while remaining competitive in the current environment. If Swabrick and the BoT had an opportunity to match aTm's offer and opted not to, then this is the most obvious sign that no, we cannot have our cake and eat it too. We either have to dramatically increase investment (which the BoT isn't willing to do) or try to convince other like-minded programs to split off and form a "League for Kids Who Read Good and Want to Do Other Stuff Good Too".

Who the F trades in a coordinator job at ND to go do the same at the4th or 5th best school in the SEC West?????

Someone who's interested in doubling his salary.

Guys, I like Elko and all that but relax. Who knows how teams were going to adjust to his defense next year with a full year of film to look at. Not saying it doesn't suck to lose him but it's not the end of the world. You can't just pay people way above market just because some desperate team is willing to.

Kind of shows Mike Elko's character, that it's all about the money for him. He had a 3 year contract and he broke it. As mentioned in the other thread Aranda said thank you, but no thanks.

I think Lea will do a fine job as a defensive coordinator.

He's literally leaving for the money. These kids continue to get worked over time and time again. Kids recruited for a certain system and style of play and now they are screwed. College football is a joke.

When Kelly said Elko would be our DC in 2018, I didn't think he meant only for 3 days of 2018.

This isnt about academics or integrity... this is about compensation.

ND makes a crap load of money... they even do dumb sh*t like move games to Yankee stadium for no other reason than seemingly to make even more money. There is nothing in ND's supposed values which prevents them from using more of the massive amount of money the football program generates to help the on field product.

Can't imagine Lea is going anywhere since he was at the basketball game last night.

What a crock of sh!t. Hopefully the class can stay together.
