If Elko is the new highest paid assistant in the country, I dont blame ND for balking.

I really liked the guy... but lets be real here. He isnt the best coordinator in the country.

Ok, but even so. HAVE A DAMN BUYOUT!

In the words of Eric Cartman: “I want to at least look pretty before the next time you fuck me.”

FWIW, Elko's defenses have routinely played progressively better from year 1 to year 2 to year 3.

I looked at Wake's past 3 years when he was hired and yeah, totally.

We were about to go HAM.

I think $2.5 million a year is what Sumlin signed for not too many years ago. Crazy.

Screw Mike Elko. You couldn't give it 2 years? It's not like the market will disappear.

I find that last sentence curious... why would BK throw out that the new guy will be hired soon if he didnt have a very good idea of who it would be?

Probably the first time A&M asked permission to speak to Elko.

I'm just not at all enthused if Mike Elston becomes the DC. Maybe he'll be great but he just doesn't get me excited at all.

Plus his name is Mike so F him too.

The bottom line is that the only way ND is going to be competitive to the degree fans want is to do what A&M is doing right now.

A&M fucked up with Sumlin, and rather than accepting it and hiring an "up and comer" they went out and spent insane amounts of money on a HC with a title and then EVEN MORE MONEY to hand pick a DC.

If ND wants to win championships, that's what they have to do. If they don't, then fine but then stop kidding us that you still take football seriously... then we can all stop showing up and watching, and over the next couple decade we can watch ND's academic reputation likewise disappear as people lose interest in a small, Midwest parochial school.

Probably not quite as bad as squandering the 2012 momentum, but this feels horrible.

Would be so interesting to see who is calling IN to ND about the position. Wonder how different this list looks than last year's list.

They have Crossroads to pay for too - kind of funky how they segregate the AD budget from so much else when it is a total driver of overall university support.

They're apparently unwilling to spend enough to keep the football program competitive, and they're also unwilling to actually be a Catholic university. So what are we trying to be now? A Midwestern Ivy?

Let's just go ahead and sell out everything that makes ND distinctive. What could possibly go wrong?

Too bad Jim Leonard is an alum of Wisconsin or I'd call that gritty bastard.

BK passed on Elston last year... so clearly BK agrees with you to a certain extent.

Why do that when they can dangle the carrot in front of us idiots for 50 cents on the $1.

welp...not shocked. Looks like the Aggies are serious about being more than middlin in the SEC. Never thought the issue there was necessarily coaches, but can't hurt to get the best. I'm guessing he was offered the assistant HC and DC jobs with the idea he'd be coach in waiting like Jimbo was at FSU...who knows though.

What a joke that BK came out and made the statement he did just to lose him. And a bigger joke that ND didn't but a huge buyout in the contract they gave him.

We are absolutely screwed now. With that being said, it's completely unreasonable to expect us to pay $2mil for a coordinator. That's absurdly above market value for even the best.

A new bar was set when Aranda signed for $2.5M.

Our best hope now may be to simply promote Lea since he's so familiar with Elko's system, and hope he turns out to be a diamond in the rough.

ND is milking it's brand over the regular season through a ridiculous schedule to maximize weekly rake. That strategy runs contrary to actually winning let alone making the playoffs.

Pay Brey instead.

I don't want to pretend that keeping Lea will save the day, because we just got straight gutted.

But I really hope he doesn't take Lea too. Although the damage has already been done.

Mike Elko is dead to me. I previously hoped that A&M would burn because of how they are going about this, and now even more. I hope he gets his ass embarrassed in the SEC. And becomes a part of the biggest disaster college football has seen.

And if your Notre Dame you can't get into an arms race like it's the USA vs USSR 60's-80's.

You offer Elko $2.5 mil....Vlearly A&M has deep pockets and will offer $3 mil....Notre Dame can't play that game...Elko is being a job whore
