Yes and no...as many have said on here...its hard to find a path to a HC job as a DC. I don't think Jimbo has more than 5 in him at this stop...so as a DC, would that help you pull the trigger...I'm just speculating...but that would be a career move not a simple lateral for more money...

I think everyone in the world would bet that the ND job will be vacant before A&M goes looking for their next HC.

The thing I am thinking about is that the HC and DC alone are $10 million a year! Plus what good is it to be the HC in waiting as Jimbo signed a 10yr deal.

Derrik Allen's response to Kelly's statement:

What's crazy is that behind the scenes these guys are all (rightfully) pissed. We'll see how this all develops, but this is bullshit and there are some guys that think ND "knew" this was happening (which I really, really don't think is true but whatever).

Mike Elko is dead to me. I previously hoped that A&M would burn because of how they are going about this, and now even more. I hope he gets his ass embarrassed in the SEC. And becomes a part of the biggest disaster college football has seen.

Blame ND for not doing what it takes to be a top program in 2018.

Winning is not the main priority for them.

So that's it. Life is all about money...My next job will be because of big money increase. I guess I'm just moron. Loyalty...psssst that's for idiots like me.

He literally came here for money and to move up the ranks. If you dislike him for this move you should've disliked him for coming here. He left a coach he had been with for years to come to ND. He didn't do it because he liked our color scheme more than Wake Forest's.

Apparently the recruits found out on twitter.

What a joke by Elko and BK if Elko wasn't willing to let them know.

Why would Elko turn down $2.5m to stay at ND? He had no previous connection to the university. He took the job because ND was a big step up in prestige and pay from Wake Forest. aTm isn't more prestigious (though that gap has narrowed a lot more than any of us would like to admit), but they offered him a lot more money. Life-changing money. How could we expect him to turn that down?

aTm just did to ND what ND has been doing to other programs for the last 50-60 years. I'm not inclined to denounce Elko personally here. This is a turning point (buzz buzz!) for NDFB.

Alot more money and the ability to recruit 5 stars without leaving your state.

Maybe flying back and forth across the country recruiting for ND tired him out?

in any case... Jimmy Lake, step right up.

Yup, but again -- is ND a place where you want to offer OTJ training?

Promoting Lea to coordinator is a bit different from hiring a HC who hasn't coached at the top level in CFB.

He's been Elko's right hand for 4+ years, he knows the system, and he's seen how Elko runs the defense... give him a shot and see if the system remains effective. If not, reset next year and fork over the money to make a big splash.

If not for Kelly seeing what this guy could do and give him the opportunity he’s still coaching at Wake and not necessarily getting much attention IMO. He’s a sellout and we’ll see how he rates next year. He got offered some real talent and resources at ND with a “Nowhere to go but up” situation. Not sure his D is that much better than where we finished up the year last year. We still have all the other coaches and I’m in favor of giving the LB coach a crack at it unless someone great comes along. #31 in points allowed isn’t exactly something to crow about imo. Oh well take the money and run and don’t let the door hit you on the way out!

I'm fine with Lea, Brady Hoke, Bo Pelini, Schiano.....and I'll throw a curve ball and say Greg Madison return I'd take.

Brady Hoke - No. Was terrible at Oregon. Did nothing at Tennessee to warrant this kind of job.

Bo Pelini - Famous for not recruiting and for being heavily disliked by administrations he deals with.

Schiano - Just had a bunch of press for allegedly knowing about child molestation. I think he's untouchable.

I'm all in for Bo. Talk about bringing in a Attitude.

OSU just poached Alex Grinch from Washington St. So maybe something is going on at Ohio State.

Fairly or not, there's just no way a Catholic institution can hire Schiano.

Moving to a big time program from Wake Forest is not really comparable to going from ND to a lesser program. I don't blame a guy for chasing money but that's all this was. And it's not the same as bettering one's career as a whole.

1. ND not matching that offer is ridiculous
2. I wonder if Elko had other reasons for jumping ship

I find that last sentence curious... why would BK throw out that the new guy will be hired soon if he didnt have a very good idea of who it would be?

"We'll add" a new defensive coordinator seems to me to be ruling out the possibility of an inside hire. Sorry Elston.

SEC offenses are pretty blah - TAMU is the only one that deviates much from the company line.

Easier job and more money. No fault on Elko here.

I am still baffled at no buy-out clauses - I thought we were offering guaranteed money which should easily be reciprocated with a buy out clause.

So frustrating ND has upped the coach pay but just no where close to being competitive still. Think of all that Weis and Willingham buyout money that we wasted compared to paying this proven commodity.

I'm probably reading too much into it, but Kelly's Twitter response seemed pretty go-f----yourself, Mike, which could indicate either (a) he was blindsided as well or (b) he fought with the powers-that-be to keep him and Elko still left. Maybe both.

This is a money driven business. We can’t be pissed at Elko and immediately turn to who were going to poach from where. I liked the guy, but I think Lea has ‘it’. He shines in interviews and knows how this defense runs. Hope he gets the spot, he knows how these players were intended to be used.
