To be honest it kind of does matter. If we don't pass them this week and they both get rolling we're stuck behind them until they lose. The further we get into the season the more locked in the top few teams become in everyone's minds. those 2-3 spots could be the difference between being a team that's a lock to make the playoffs to a team that's on the bubble or that needs help.

My point was keep winning... worry about polls once we do.

Am I the only one that wasn't disappointed with our o line at all? Maybe it was just because I was expecting the worst, but they performed better than anticipated. You're never going to stop a line as strong as Michigan's but I felt that our tackles in particular did a solid job funneling the rush outside, giving Wimbush a chance to climb up in the pocket.

This unit just lost 2 of the best lineman in the country. It's going to take some time for them to gel, and that was the best defense they will face all season.

I'm very bullish on our line going forward.

Also Alohi Gilman is a revelation. When is the last time we have safety play that good??

Zibby maybe ??

So great to beat Michigan!

However they are terrible and feel we get our ass handed to us with Wimbush at qb against an elite team.

Said it last year, but the sooner Wimbush is moved to slot wr and start Book we will be unstoppable

Go Irish!!!!

The tron frequently flashed:

“MICHIGAN WANTS YOU TO BE QUIET.”

Great strategy to get the crowd going.

I wouldn’t say it was loud from start to finish, but at its peak, it was definitely the loudest it’s been in years.

Tbh, that kick off return kept Michigan in the game and also ND’s conservative play calling after a sizeable lead.

Our offense managed the second half, whereas we came out ready to kill them to start the game.

Yes, Michigan has a tough defense, but they were inferior as a team.

The score doesn’t reflect it, but we did what we could to keep them in the game and still beat them.

On to the next!

One thing I heard from people at the game was that they played a Holtz video about the stadium being “too loud” back in the day and that sent everyone into an absolute frenzy. By all accounts, the “green out” worked and the stadium was rocking.

I disagree with this. I do think that BW still needs improvement but his arm down the field was good last night. I wish he was better at the screen game. His running ability helped the overall offense last night. But he does need to try and get more North and South. I give Brandon a "B" for his performance last night. And his toughness to stay in the pocket and take some shots.

The place was so loud after that. It was great. Of course it went to a quarter of that volume immediately after the play ended, but it was great for a few seconds. Wish it could be sustained. It was rocking

I’m extremely disappointed not a single member has mentioned how well Daelin Hayes played last night. IMO he was the best DE on ND last night. That’s the Hayes I envisioned cling out of high school.

All 4 DE’s played good for ND last night.

Great point. Proving that stats can be deceiving, Hayes only recorded one tackle but had his best game in an ND uniform. Much as I dislike Flutie, he was giving Daelin plenty of love.

Yes. This made the place go wild. And honestly the crowd had kinda hit a bit of a lul right around then. Both offense had went blah and it was looking "over" with a ton of football left to be played. Ive been going to games regularly for 25 years and it was def a top 5 atmosphere.

Can anyone tell me if Koon has came around and ate his crow yet? Patterson ain't shit.

Am I wrong or does the thought of a Stanford ground and pound offense give you the worries?

Wimbush nearly had 3 picks yesterday. Ground-and-pound is the way forward so long as he is the QB.

EDIT: I may have misunderstood. I don't think our defense will have trouble against a ground-and-pound offense, either, unless they have a super-elite O-line. Nobody we play the rest of the regular season schedule has such an O-line.

BK coaches a team that beat a top 15 team in the first week of season. How many coaches can claim that? Not many. Awesome game by all. There are very few negatives, if any, from this game. We played a great defense last night and dominated a former 5 star QB.

This is not what anybody thought was going to happen.

Wimbush did exactly what he does best. Took vertical shots and body blows with his legs. Guys went up and fought for contested balls.

Safety play makes a ton of difference. Gilman is aggressive and violent. Kid is all over the place.

OL I’ll reserve judgement. Hainsey didn’t even get hands on Winovich a couple of times. His balance looked off. Tough matchup for us for sure. But plenty of time to improve.

Definitely got more conservative in the second half on O, I’m assuming that was because of the way we were playing defensively. I like the way we stuck with the run and our backs will improve. Again, that’s a tough front 7.

The back end of the D allowed the line to get some great pressure without help. To be honest, I thought McCaffrey looked better and more confident in his short time than 5 star Shea.

A lot of good to build on. We have a fast, aggressive team here. Player development has been exceptional the past couple of years. Our D line can come in waves. Kareem and Hayes are men! Tillery is coming into his own. Looking forward to a great season! Go Irish!

Of note, as I re-watch the game. What a bogus call on the Tranquill PI at approx. 5 min in the 4th. Completely bailed out that pathetic offense.

They didn’t score an offensive TD until 2 min in the 4th, lol. Shea Patterson is the man, said nobody. Well, if they did, they were stupid.

Daelin Hayes had one of those games where his game stats did not reflect the impact he had on the game last night. He had a tremendous impact that helped all dlinemen and LB's. Tillery, Kareem, Coney, etc

Wimbush running the ball after passing the ball around a bit, was very effective as well. If wimbush can establish a threat early in games with his passing, those running lanes should be there all year long. They key is making his passing a threat the defense has to honor, if Wimbush can establish that, the offense has a good shot. It worked for most of the game yesterday, until they went vanilla in the 2nd half.

Only reason it was close is due to ST play.

I think BW throwing early in the game caught Brown off guard...especially from deep in ND territory.

Yea...if we are honest BW got Lucky some...but I think he knows by now the receivers and situations where odds are in his favor....so is it pure luck, or more like counting cards luck. IF he can keep getting confidence, the throws will come out on time more often, which is the bigger issue I see with him right now.

I really can't tell what is there at RB. The cut and pop Armstrong showed on his first TD...that's plenty adequate. I guess all I can say is ...Lots of glimpses of parts and pieces there.

Defense is very good.

It is fun to pound on Patterson as overrated because it makes Michigan fans suffer...but he can be good enough to win the BIG. He won't see another defense like that...and his oline will get better. He was made to look pedestrian...but he can play.

Posted elsewhere, but, reps to whoever can post a photo of Tommy, Deshone, and Brandon singing the Alma Mater together... They looked so dang happy.

Reminded me of Anikan, Old Ben, and Yoda at the end of ROTJ.

There has been some griping about our OLine play. Since I didn't get that impression from anything other than Winovich playing like a man with his hair on fire, I decided to take a "slow-and-pause" look at the first quarter. Anyone else who would like to do similar things would be very welcome.

I don't want to "make a career' out of this so what follows will just be a play-by-play evaluation as to whether a lineman had a "plus" or a minus. If a player didn't have much to do on the play, I can't penalize him for that, and he gets a plus.

First series

Play one --- everyone did their job.
Play two --- Winovich beat Eichenberg and caused some trouble; otherwise OK.
Play three --- Winovich unblocked but by design. All OK. (pass complete)
Play four --- Winovich and Gary "slow-beat" tackles but BW steps up to clean spot.
Play five --- Hainsey beautifully runs Gary way out of play, and all others good.
Play six --- Winovich unblocked by design and BW correctly reads.
Play seven --- Outstanding run blocking everywhere; Kraemer pancakes. (TD)

Second series

Play eight --- TV cut to tornado watch --- missed it.
Play nine --- SWEEP RIGHT (shouldn't do this vs Michigan.) Receivers blow their assignments and Mustipher misses block. Kraemer OK but in impossible clogged situation.
Play ten --- all pass protection positive.
Play eleven --- all blocking good (BW reads the unblocked end correctly)
Play twelve --- everyone did their job.
Play thirteen --- Both tackles got speed-rushed wide, but interior smothered theirs and BW made fast effective "inside" scramble.
Play fourteen --- blocked the waddin' out of everyone (Finke score.)

Third series

Play fifteen --- SWEEP LEFT (don't do this vs UofM) --- TE misses block and Eichenberg too. Hainsey whiffs on back side and Winovich catches play.
Play sixteen --- everybody good but BW blows pass.
Play seventeen --- wide speed rushes "beat" Eichenberg and Hainsey but inner three stuff everyone including two blitzers. BW steps up but blows pass.

End of quarter.

My opinions:
Eichenberg --- positive 12 out of 17. Four of five errors were on speed rushes (one run block). Three of four speed rushes were negated by the inner three stuffing their players and cleaning a pocket. The run blocking bust was a sweep.
Bars --- no busts.
Mustipher --- one "bust" but a hard sweep pull ask.
Kraemer --- no busts.
Hainsey --- positive 13 out of 17. All busts were by wide speed (mainly Winovich --- Gary didn't do much this quarter; it was this guy and the linebacker.) 3 of busts were made good by the inner guys cleaning pockets for step ups.

Overall assessment of first quarter: Three inner guys played like AAs. (sometimes plays get stopped by "the other guys" being too many or too good.) Our tackles had fits with Winovich --- HE definitely was AA. Gary was "some" trouble but not as much.

If we play like this all season, we're trophy winners again.

Calls to replace Wimbush with Book are absolutely ridiculous. There is no way in hell Book takes that draw 18 yards for a 1st down after the sack. There would have been at least 1-2 more sacks with Book. That play where Wimbush spun free and got that first down to Claypool in the 3rd just flat out could not have happened with Book. That's the best defense we will play all season. Maybe we didn't hit a home run on offense yesterday, but we hit a standup double with a baseball doughnut over the bat. Can't wait to see what we're doing to defenses come October-November

Especially since they had not thrown a flag for PI a couple times before for the ball being uncatchable.
