Very happy that some think that of Joe but I highly doubt he is drafted that high. He just doesn't match up with what LB's are usually drafted in the 2nd and 3rd rds. If he does, I will be nothing other than super happy for him but also very surprised.

Agree with this.

Max Bullough from Michigan State didn't even get drafted, and he impressed me more than Schmidt (not a slight at Schmidt). It baffles me that anybody would think that Schmidt has the chance to go as high in the draft as Manti did.

Bullough not getting drafted was shocking to say the least, as he was projected in the 4th or 5th round. Though he did get in trouble and missed the Rose Bowl, which hurt his stock considerably, especially since his backup thrived in that game. Joe has shown to be a great leader, keeps his nose clean and can learn a defense quickly and effectively. I don't think there's any chance he's a 2nd or 3rd rounder, he's just not athletic enough to warrant that. I could see him somewhere in the 5th to 7th round, if he has a healthy and productive season.

A 6th or 7th round flier perhaps (and then only to the Vikings lol) perhaps, but we'll see. I do think there's a good chance that he makes a hell of a coach one day.

He's had a broken thumb since fall camp. He played with it on Saturday...he'll be fine.

Ah, didn't realize he had played with it (was at a wedding without a TV) so thought he might have re-injured it. Thanks for clarifying.

He played a hell of a game after getting some crap (deservedly so) on here. Hope the 2014 Schmidt is here for the rest of the season.

He's playing really, really bad tonight. Which can be said for about a dozen players but he's the weakest link on the defense.

If we lose, I think the defense is one of the last units we should place blame on. The offense has put them in shitty situations the whole night.

Three out of four Clemson big plays were Joe Schmidt failures.

he's not fast enough for big time football. there was reason he was only offered by middling programs.

To be honest, he hasn't been great but neither has anyone else. That said, we're talking about a walk-on who is undoubtedly giving all he has--if better athletes can't beat him for a spot, that's on them.

This is exactly where I'm at. I freaking love Joe Schmidt, but I also wonder why -- on a bad leg -- he's our only option at MIKE. Are there really no other players that are ready to play?

I don't like being overly critical of players, period. But man... he did not grade out well tonight or probably any of the recent games. I think he was significantly faster last year.

I agree on this one. Exactly how bad is his backup if Joe is this bad.

He's a good guy that has greatly over acheived but hehas no business starting on a team with this much talent.

He's just a step slow on every play the opposition makes.

He played okay in the second half, but some of those okay plays were getting in the way and waiting on help. A MLB needs to be a bit more than that, but I don't know enough to say more than that.

*The entire defense was literally just ONE step behind in the first half, to be fair.

Bvg and Joe should hav no meeting or conversations related to defense without nyles. He NEEDS to be able to play this year.

What we're mainly talking about are the first six-and-a-half minutes of the game, where Joe, bless his heart, stunk ... BUT SO DID JAYLON. We had absentee linebacking throughout that critical period. We also had some safety whiffing.

When Jaylon began playing like a QB spy [as frankly he has been doing as a midrange center fielder in earlier games,] we got a lot better all over the place.

Yes and no. Human nature being what it is, it is not always the case that the most qualified or talented individual gets promoted. Given Kelly's past comments, the staff seems to really like Schmidt's grasp of the defensive scheme. The only problem I have with this is that I would guess that Garry Kasparov's son could also quickly grasp the defensive scheme, but that doesn't mean that I want him as my starting middle linebacker. Also it wasn't like Morgen was totally lost last year but the only time I remember him seeing him playing defense this year was late in the second half against UMass. I would think getting him some occasional game time experience would be a plus, if not for this year then next.

Agreed Lax, and I've been saying this for a few weeks now. He hasn't graded out well in 3 of 4 games. I love what he means but he isn't a CFB playoff caliber player and I think it's very apparent.

I too am baffled at how BVG hasn't developed anybody behind him. At this stage I don't put anything past him, sadly.

So what's the point? Because everyone played bad, it's ok for him to do so? This whole we love Schmidt is fine but he's not playing good football and it's clear to EVERYONE

Don't think anybody is saying he is. The point is that if the coaches haven't pulled him yet, it speaks to the utter ineptitude of Morgan, et al.

On numerous plays last night Joe was man on man with a WR or the RB split out wide. I don't know what BvG is doing. No clue.

The defense did come back and play better. However, the scheme that he runs truly blows me away sometimes. I honestly believe that situational football has completely passed him by.
