one question:

How in the fvck did Alize pass concussion protocol lol?

Yea that is a good question. I gave him that missed reception later on bc of the egregious foul that should have sidelined him. Can't blame him for trying to cheat that system tho

FWIW (little, I know) I decided to do the 2nd quarter.

First six offensive plays were five BW reads of some sort plus one BW straight run. All of these were blocked competently except one Bars/Eichenberg goof up of a twist, and BW made the wrong read anyway. Box was generally stacked vs run (safety coming closer).

Seventh play was a perfect pocket leading to a pass interference. .
Eighth play was an undercenter roll screen which worked perfectly except Mack illegal shifted. All blocking good.

9th: Eichenberg speed beat, but the guards stuffed M so much that BW can duck up and run.

10th: BW reads DE and goes for a screen in flat. All blocks good. We aren't just gobbling yards because M is full of pursuing athletes.

11th: Another zone read, and BW keep. All line blocks good. Receiver blocks poor (as they have been generally.)

12th: under center with fullback. Bars gets confused, and no receivers block properly.

13th: Hainsey speed beaten. Gary tries to undercut Eichenberg, but BW reads that and runs well.

14th: 4th and inches --- middle three get enough push.

15th: Winovich beats Hainsey for sack. TJones also blows his block. Backs aren't blocking much.

16th: Screen: Eich a little slow but play is a good one.

17th: Winovich speed rush roughs BW, who steps up into clean pocket but overthrows.

(NOTE: Kraemer has been so dominating whoever is in front of him that DC Brown is calling many defenses where that player doesn't even rush. This is like the treatment that ZMart gets in the pros.)

18th: Book in to hand ball off for TD. Great blocks especially by Bars.

19th-21st: three simple reads and runs. All blocks OK but box stacked. Mustipher whiffed once but not relevant to result.

22nd: Screen in flat. Blocks good.

23rd: Solid pocket, read a bit slow by BW, but pass complete. Winovich gets there just late. (wouldn't have with quicker read.)

24th: BW keep. Blocks OK but box stacked.

25th: Screen was bad but blocks of line were OK.

26th: Pass, Hainsey had to hold Winovich.

Summary:
Kraemer, Mustipher, and Bars basically clean. Kraemer also mauling some of M's players in the meathouse brawling.

Eichenberg fewer mistakes, helped by inner three stuffing M's DTs and BW recognizing that it's safe to step up.

Hainsey good except when facing Winovich. Frankly I'm not sure how many people could have blocked him Saturday. WAY better game than any other UofMer, including Gary.

Conclusion: we have a darned good Oline. Michigan has a very good defense and they couldn't dominate us, and to a degree, even when our calls got conservative, some of our guys dominated them. This was a war in the trenches, and we've got some warriors.

He passed the concussion protocol because he wasn't concussed. The real question is how was he not concussed from a hit like that?

This probably sounds crazy, but he was totally fine and asking to get up but the ND trainers instructed him to stay down. The trainers ordered him to stay down because it was a visible shot to his head, and they were following procedure.

He never lost consciousness or had any concussion symptoms, and he passed the evaluation in the tent.

Best thing ever would be JH getting fired, taking some random job like Texas Tech and instantly turning them into a national power....

Will be interesting to see where these two teams go. After the Georgia game last year, I didn't come away thinking those were two of the top 10 teams in the country. Who knows, Michigan may go on to have a very good season.

Really shocked that JH has done so poorly. Guy turned a horrible Stanford program into a top 10 team. Thought he would have Michigan rolling by year 4. This is why coaching changes usually suck. People on here were all over Herman two years ago and he's proving to be extremely overrated. It's tough to find an elite coach. That's why when you have one, you only suspend him for three games when he deserves to be fired.

Isn’t ND using those new “breakaway” helmets? I wonder if the technology is catching up to the violence of the game. Let’s hope so!

Irish had 4 penalties for 40 yards, should have been 3 penalties

PI (Bad Call)

Kick out of Bounds (Really?)
Illegal Formation

Personal Foul

For the first game - I'll take it. Very disciplined taken everything into account.

After Michigan returned the kick we were saying in the stands kicking out of bounds might not be a bad strategy!!

Also hilarious listening to the armchair quarterback fans screaming like idiots for fair catching the ball having no idea of the rule change...then watching the dumbfounded looks on their faces when the new rule was announced over PA!!

Hell yeah I’ll take it. Can’t believe that the O-Line, playing against two potential future rounders, had zero holding penalties and zero false starts. That’s incredible discipline by the players!

Yes the stadium sounded loud at times but also very quiet at times.

I think this is a fair assessment. There are still times where people like me have to seemingly coax an entire section to get off of their asses and get loud, and that results in some not-as-loud times. Some combination of people getting burned out from yelling so much and the "family-friendly" atmosphere that ND is known for (definitely not a bad thing, but does hamper the noise at times).

BUT

All that being said, with about 8 mins left in the fourth and michigan driving (around the 50) they showed clips from the 1988 game where the crowd noise actually delayed the game. This got the place LOUD. Probably the loudest I've ever heard that stadium (been going since the mid-late 90s). The only other time it was close to that loud in my memory was 2012 Stanford in OT.

I rewatched the game this morning and that noise is barely noticeable on the NBC broadcast. They need to do a better job of letting that bleed through, because for 4 plays (turnover on downs) that place was electric, and it absolutely played a factor (on 4th down you can see McCaffrey unsuccessfully try to snap the ball several times before the center can hear him).

I was exhausted and sweating profusely after this, but it was pretty awesome to have the feeling that we had a true "12th man" on that drive.

EDIT: I see this was mentioned earlier. Sorry - still catching up.

Wimbush still throws off his back foot almost every time, but his ability to extend plays is deadly. Would still like to see him improve over the season, but the exciting thing is that Michigan should be the toughest defense we see this year.

I was extremely impressed with the defense, and especially the front 7. We look fast on defense, and swarm to the ball. I haven't said that about a ND defense in a while. Gilman gets my game ball for the defense. What an asset he might be. And speaking of safeties, Elliot didn't make any bad plays or miss tackles. So hopefully he really has improved.

OL has a lot of work to do, but they can hope clean that up over the next couple weeks. RBs are very average, but I knew that going in. Will be nice to get Dexter back.

Lastly, Winbush outperformed my expectations. I was very concerned about him, and I thought he had excellent pocket presence and stepped up and/or escaped like he was calm, cool, and collected. He played great considering how often he was getting smacked.

The injury to MTA sucks. Were out 2 playmakers for the season on defense already. These are huge hits that can deplete the depth quickly. Really hope we can get through the next few without any more major injuries. I wonder if Ewell cross trains back? I doubt it.

Koon, I love ya bro but I have reservations about a couple things here.

1. What did you expect our RB’s to do last night?
- your just not going to get a big yds/carry number versus that defense. What you will get is big chunk plays, which is exactly what we got. Including rushing TD’s from 10’s or so out.

2. Why would Ewell move back if we lose a 3t when he was a NT?
- doesn’t make a lot of sense to me that this would matter for his reps.

I didn't expect much, I mentioned before this game I dont think the RBs will be special, and Michigan was going to be hard to run on. But I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised. My low expectations for them were basically confirmed. But when Dexter gets back hopefully that will change. They're solid, just not going to scare anyone with power runs or break away plays.

When you lose a guy in the 2 deep on the DL, things become fluid. Coaches have already confirmed this will cause Bonner to cross train, and others. Ewell has been a DT all the way up to 2 weeks ago, so it's a fair question. Whoever the 3rd string DTs are are going to play, can he get to 3rd string? Maybe a moot point if he doesn't go back, but just a thought.

1) I am not going to say they played a great game, but our OL played a solid game against 2 very good defenders in Rashan Gary & Devin Bush.
2) Khalid Kareem and Alohi Gilman are going to be very good for ND this year.
3) I cannot wait until Dex comes back, our running game is nothing to be scared about.
4) Good to see Alize Mack come back in the game after the hit.
5) I hope they keep Yoon with kickoffs.
6) For all you that picked Michigan to win.....

Go Irish!

I was not pleased when we brought back the Michigan series, but what a great way to get the monkey off your back.

Outside of 2014, it's been a rough go for us.

Fantastic win, and nothing to nitpick IMO.

Dex coming back will be huge!

So, Michigan’s RB’s must be absolutely terrible if ours are suspect, in your opinion. Because they averaged 1.8yds/carry last night.

I get the narrative, “We need Dex” and all but it seems you’re missing what’s actually in front of you. Clearly. That’s the best defense we’ll play all year. Literally everybody going into the game knew we’d have a low yds/carry number, we just had to hit a few big runs and/or timely runs and we did just that.

Honestly, anybody that thought, before the game, we were going to have big yds/carry number might not understand the game.

Good news is the coaches knew that and had a game plan for it.

Yeah, I dont think their RBs are anything special either. They also wouldn't worry me if I were a DC.

I wasnt expecting big YPC. But expecting and then confirming they were overwhelmed all night doesn't bump me from "I dont think they're special, just solid" to something beyond that.

Again, they must be absolutely terrible, like not even P5 worthy if you are using last night as a barometer, does that make sense?

Point is, you are using a singular game to make a definitive staemtent about our RB’s after we just played a really good defense. You could say the same about Saquon Barkley after he played Rutgers or Indiana, of all teams. Clearly that would’ve been stupid, in hindsight, right?

Michigan's defense allowed 3.49 yards per rush throughout all of last season. Let's wait a few games before we evaluate our running backs.

Just got back from SB a little bit ago.

1. Crowd was as loud as any game I've been too.
2. Our D is legit.
3. Tillery is going to get AA recognition if he keeps his play up.
4. Who was our DC last year? lol
5. Wimbush has improved immensely. His completion rate would have been higher if the line could have given him more time.
6. scUM got a lot of pressure in the second half, but they were bring extra people most every play and it took a while for us to keep some help in to protect.
7. Newsome nailed it when he was on, but still had a couple of bad kicks.
8. Oline did reasonably well against a very good D.

We had two drunk scUM fans sittin next to us. The one next to my wife was pacing in place, sticking his ass in her face and almost hit her with his elbows several times. All of it unintentional, but still irritating. He was so drunk he was oblivious to what he was doing. I told him to stay in his space, then a couple of scUM fans behind us got on the guy for banging into my wife. I stood up to intervene and my wife stands up and says, "I've got this. I can stick up for myself". She lays into the guy and every time I try to say something she tells me to "stay out of it". lol He was better behaved in the second half, but still annoying. As we're walking out, I looked at her and said, "Now you know why I say F@ck Michigan! lol

1. Tailgating was awesome, could hardly walk in the rows in the Joyce lot
2. Winbush floats too many passes, throws off back foot. Could have been picked a couple more times
3. Credit BW for some tough running, but if that is their offensive plan he'll be beaten down 6-7 games into season
4. TEs should be BFF for BW
5. Thought D played well
6. kick off return was so deflating, was he even touched?
7. stadium ambience was best I've seen in 50 years attending games
8. tighten it up next 3 games, and bring on Stanford
9. headed for a showdown in Blacksburg
