I get your point but how is ND responsible for the (seemingly) bad choices that Diaco, Elko & Lea made under their own free will? ND didn’t run any of these guys out of town...just the opposite.

Diaco wanted to be a HC and evidently wasn’t willing to wait for a better opportunity.

Elko wanted to get paid. When he called ND’s bluff multiple times, Swarbrick had had enough and wished him well in College Station.

Lea as everyone has mentioned just took his dream job. Him putting together even one winning season is still more likely than ND making a close game w/ Bama on Jan 1. Plus, he’s going in w/ eyes wide open and saying “Damn the torpedoes”. Again...free will.
Again, it was a joke based on the decisions of the DCs after the fact. Not a slight towards BK, nor ND itself. The joke being that Freeman would be better off staying at Cinci than to come here and wind up with a shitty HC position or *gulp* unemployed. And honestly, maybe he would be better off at Cinci than coming here, that remains to be seen, but I don't actually believe that coming here as DC is a career death sentence. Just that the subsequent decisions/fates of said DCs is questionable at best, if not just bad.

Gotcha. Thanks for clarifying.

With so many similar threads it’s hard to keep up with every post.

The 2015 Stanford game is on FS1 right now.... I'm literally getting sick to my stomach at seeing how much NFL talent is on that team especially on defense and realizing how atrociously bad that defense was.

Seriously....BVG is still getting paid to coach a college defense smh

I think we scored with under 30 seconds to go and I felt like we left too much time on the clock. That’s how bad that defense was.

Yeah, that was pathetic. I wanted to strangle that goofy looking midget kicker running around hot dogging after making that kick.

I think we are promoting from within anyway. Maybe not. We'll see.

I’m a little scarred cuz of BVG but I’m cool with internal continuity. The more we see these coordinators move on, the more I think BK has a massive impact on the defense that gets understated.

Not a whole lot in there but Kelly's comment on the front are interesting as I was wondering if Elston became DC, if he would switch back to a 3-4, as that's what he's coached before. However, it seems like Kelly is set on this current 4 man front with a stand up end.

Sources indicated to FootballScoop that Kelly already has been tentatively working to set up potential interviews with one or more Southeastern Conference coaches

Well that is interesting. I don't know how many of those defenses I would really want to steal guys off of though.

Prepare yourself for Muschamp. He is available and well paid already. Lol.

If they are a top 25 recruiter I don’t even care. Just bring in the dudes and figure it out later.

Exactly. You aren't necessarily poaching from the SEC because they have schematic advantages (LOL), but for the dog like approach they'll have to recruiting.

I completely disagree. It’s why Oregon lost to Oregon State and Cal in back to back weeks. Or Michigan is a dumpster fire. No thank you to a sole focus on recruiting. Sometimes it does not get figured out later.

Do you think Don Brown is all recruiting and no coaching??? I might just be misunderstanding cause I completely agree with Oregon’s comparison. However, I also don’t think Muschamp is all recruiter and not a coach. From what I’ve seen he’s a fantastic defensive coach. Whoever it is I hope they are a great recruiter but more importantly that they run a great scheme and I hope it is similar to that 4-2-5 that Clark and Mike Elko ran.

I was responding to the above comment, that I quoted, saying top recruiter and figure it out later. Michigan and Oregon, this year, are good examples why that is not how it works, at all.

Don Brown had been one of the best DC in the country for years.

What an odd example to pick.

Don Brown isn’t the example as much as the program is but either way. A team that historically recruits in the top 10 and was below .500 is a great example of why recruiting isn’t all that matters.

Michigan didn’t recruit worse talent than any team they lost to this season. Not a single one. Great example indeed. Whether it was Brown or Harbaugh’s fault, it doesn’t matter.

I'm honestly with this though. Michigan's defense has been exploited for years, and their fans are all over reddit saying that Don Brown refused to make adjustments. It really doesn't matter how great he was at BC and scUM in 16 and 17 if he hasn't changed his scheme since and hasn't recruited the positions absolutely pivotal to his scheme. Shades of Bob Diaco, just a much more successful one.

Yea, it sounds like a lot of folks around the program thought that Brown went the way of Tenuta and BVG. To engrained in their systems and not enough in personnel and opponents.

But, the example really has nothing to do with ones thoughts on his coaching acumen. If talent is all that is needed and it’s so simple to just, figure it out later, then he’d still have a job.
