Swarbrick has already shown time after time that he will take care of things. I expect him to take care of this.

Anyways, in his post he said that he had people that he trusted completely saying that the BoT were PISSED at BK for everything that went down with the Eagles, and they predicted that they would hold it against Kelly come contract time. A lot of people scoffed at his post at the time, but now, he sounds prophetic.

If this is indeed the case, if they feel the need to smack down Kelly over the Eagles thing, then people on the BoT need to yank the collective stick out of their asses.
Presumably they didn't get where they are in life by being pansies about their own careers and they shouldn't begrudge Kelly for thinking about opportunities that come his way. What, they really think he should just sit back and be happy to be here? If those smug pricks run off the best coach we've had in 20 years over a few meaningless days of considering a great opportunity, well I guess they deserve what they'll get.

All signs point to "Not Up To Swarbrick"

Splendid. So if we lose Kelly, odds are we lose him, too. Because we all know the only important decision a Notre Dame athletic director makes is who he hires as football coach (or at least that's what the diehards will say). And Swarbrick has better things to do than stick around if he knows he can't keep a good one.

Sorry. I know this is all hearsay at this point and could well be happily resolved before the week is out. But the arrogance of Notre Dame's administration really chafes sometimes.

Aren't there 47 members on the board of Trustees?
I wonder what could have possibly gone down with the Eagles that would have so many of them upset. It seems odd that they would be so butt-hurt over BK simply exploring his options. If it is the BoT holding this up then I can't help but think there may be more to the story than we know at this time.

Still fully expect a deal to be reached.

I'm mildly concerned, but the season is too short and too fun to get worked up over it now. I'll be muchore concerned if its December or January and still nothing is done, and that's primarily bc Swarbrick said awhile ago that one was coming. But for now, once camps starts its all about positional battles and players stepping up and leaders stepping up, etc. If GITF closes the thread, it wouldn't even bother me. Everyone said their piece...

Thanks. Any way you slice it, I can't see behavior or motivation accurately portrayed in the supposition.

If it is someone trying to reign football in, they ought to look at Father Hessburgh's two attempts, (post Brennan and post Holtz). But, logically, I cannot see anything more than posturing here.

That's where this whole thing started; with a lot of positives about results within the program. Back to the Fall Camp thread!

Everyone knows that makes a one and three-quarters inch difference, except in the case of someone who commands lightening from their @ss.

THAT ought to be weird enough to firmly derail the thread.

If Notre Dame has another good/big year AND BK leaves right after because the admin wouldn't do what it takes to hold onto him... AFTER the previous four coaches...

well, if that happens, I'd seriously have to re-evaluate love affair/passion in this whole thing...

What would be the point of investing so much if the admin. is that self defeating... just the thought is frustrating.

I was never worried that Kelly was leaving. I think I recall telling people to "Keep calm and carry on" during the Eagles situation. History has shown that this job is a destination job, even in the down times. The last coach to use ND as a stepping stone to a possibly better job (NFL) was Kuharich in '58, and for Joe the writing was kind of on the wall as people were calling for his head. Every other coach has either been fired or retired/stepped down for health reasons.

That said...if Kelly was gone in a hypothetical situation because the school didn't try to retain him...I'd still be a fan regardless. If the school continued down the path of mediocrity on the field, or fell to a perennial doormat like Indiana, I certainly wouldn't be as passionate about the Irish or devote as much time as I do now, but I'd still be a fan. I often wonder how fans of these teams ante up each season and commit 110% to following their team? Just seems like a waste of your time if you're only good for 1-4 wins each year. It's one thing to be competitive every 3-4 years, it's another thing if you haven't had a coach go .500 since the 30s.

Kuharich didn't use the ND HC position as a stepping stone to the NFL. He was the '55 NFL Head Coach of The Year, 5 years before coming to ND.

He was an NFL assistant coach with Pittsburgh in '47.

NFL Chicago Cardinals HC in '52. Served one year in that position and became a free lance NFL scout.

Hired as Washington Redskin HC '54 - '60. Won NFL Coach of The Year in '55 with an 8-4 season.

He stepped down at ND before he got fired and subsequently returned to the NFL as the Head of Officials, hardly a step up.

In '63 he was hired by the Eagles as HC with a 15 year contract. The Eagles new owner in '69 bought out his contract. He had one winning season with the Eagles.

That was my point, not that I'd stop being a Notre Dame guy, just that I'd have to pull back... I think I would view this whole thing as the school not being serious about winning, hard to be so passionate about that.

I'm with ya there, just thought I'd put in my 2 cents. Still don't know if I could be the type of fan that follows a perennial doormat though. Thats got to be hard.

Well, I was really just using Kuharich as an outlier, the exception to the rule among ND coaches where he didn't retire or get fired, but when you put it that way...
but yeah, they were calling for his head like I mentioned. If he didn't step down on his own accord, he would have been ousted.

It's been awhile since I've done the research, but if you throw out Kuharich, who was the last coach to leave ND that wasn't fired or retired/step down for health reasons?
