We're in dangerous territory here, as we're working entirely off assumptions. BK allegedly wants more flexibility with admissions, akin to what Holtz enjoyed. That concession doesn't equate to compromising ND's academic integrity.
Do you think ND would be "selling out" if it had made an exception and admitted AQM? He's technically a borderline recruit, since he's lacking a core class, but I have little doubt he would succeed at ND if admitted. That type of inflexibility with admissions puts us at a significant competitive disadvantage, and asking the BoT to change that is not out of line.
I admit that I'm just starting to get into following recruiting so I'm far from qualified to comment, but based on the fact pattern you presented, I would be on board with an exception like that provided the kid had some kind of written plan to cover the deficiency with an extra summer class or something. However, it seems strange to me that this structure isn't already in place. When I applied to Notre Dame (as a regular Joe) I was able to submit an explanation of why my school didn't allow students to schedule both Band and a Foreign Language, creating a "deficiency" on my application. If what you're saying is the true reason for AQM's situation, it would seem like recruits are actually held to a more stringent standard than regular applicants (in some ways).
