A lot to process here.

For the player:
1. Got a bad deal
2. Did not receive needed support
3. Was treated like a number and not a name
4. Was not given an opportunity to TRY the major he wanted

For the school:
1. Transfer if you dont like it. Its a college, not a jail
2. The % of engineering students who actually make it through is small. Just because you WANT to do something, doesnt mean you CAN do something. Still should have been given a chance though.

*so yeah, Purdue screwed up, and the dude should have transferred (his screw up)

This is where the 1 year penalty becomes such an issue when coupled with the fact that a school can cut you from scholarship at any time for any reason. What happens if you transfer to a new school, lose 25% of your eligibility, and then get the same raw deal?

If he told the coaches at Purdue "eff off, I want to do engineering" and they said "well that means you're not committed to the team so you're cut"... then he's screwed. If he transfers, he may get lied to again by the new staff recruiting him.

Bottom line is that the players have zero leverage in these situations because of the way the system is designed. There are a handful of schools that approach things the way ND does, and then everyone else is some varying degree of Purdue. Michigan forcing their players into general studies, Ohio State keeping them eligible but not on track to graduate, UNC's years of institutionalized fake classes, etc. etc. It's a systemic problem. Ironically, ND is the one who forfeits two years worth of wins for being too self-righteous with their academics.

Except that Purdue was most likely telling him that the connections he was making at this school would be there for him once he graduated and that these connections would help him post graduation.

Purdue is a very affordable college too.

Cutting bait from sports, getting a loan like all the other students, and studying whatever you want was an option too.

He basically had the choice to be an athlete or a student, and he chose to be an athlete. Sucks for him, because it sounds like he truly wanted both, but Purdue wouldnt give him that. Shouldnt have stayed a prisoner.

Have to agree here. Purdue should be ashamed. Kid should've either cut bait or left the team. That's a tough thing to put on a kid, but at the end of the day his worst possible outcome is that he is just like any other student on campus with one less semester of debt.

Another big issue is that these kids and their parents need to pay attention to stories like this. If you're in high school and are thinking about choosing Purdue because of their engineering program, don't do it. Stuff like this needs to be spread around so that kids can make better informed decisions about what they are choosing when they choose a school. If it starts to effect Purdue's recruiting (and therefore their bottom line), I bet they'll start doing the right thing.

Welllllll....the kid did have a choice.

HE wanted Purdue and got Purdue. If academics were more important than school he could have played FCS ball and gotten a full ride AND gotten to take the engineering major.

I always read this outtakes with a huge grain of salt. NCAA football is NOT a Gulag system. The kids get treated so much better than every single other kid that attends the university.

If the kid thought he could do and engineering degree and produce on the football field, he absolutely could have put his foot down and said so. If he thought he could get an engineering degree from Purdue for free by attending football practices...then yeah he was given bad advice.

The take away from this is......there is no such thing as a free lunch

This isn't a Purdue problem, it's a nationwide problem at a lot of schools when it comes to student athletes, but the student needs to own this as much as Purdue. It's a very demanding engineering school and Purdue was being honest with him when it came being able to carry the workload and play. The student could have said , "No I want to try engineering" and see how it turned out. If he knew there was no playing after college, he could have said "no thanks" I'll attend class. Receiving a scholarship offer doesn't mean you have to accept it.

https://www.lansingstatejournal.com/story/sports/college/msu/football/2018/07/23/michigan-state-football-big-ten-east-predictions/818603002/?hootPostID=a8c7b27fea56f8c740856a6be99b3110

With the college football season inching closer, that means preseason polls aren't far behind.

On Friday, cleveland.com released a preseason Big Ten poll, voted on by 28 writers from the Big Ten.

Some results will not surprise. Some very well might.

Ohio State was picked to win the Big Ten East, picking up 23.5 first-place votes (191.5 points).

Coming in second? Michigan State.

The Spartans received two first-place votes (142 points), which edged out Penn State (141.5 points, one first-place vote).

Michigan, with 140.5 points and 1.5 votes for first place, came in fourth. Rounding out the East is Maryland, Indiana and Rutgers.

Media members unanimously picked Wisconsin to win the West.

When it came to picking the Big Ten championship game, 14 had Ohio State over Wisconsin. Another nine picked the Badgers over the Buckeyes.

Then there were two who had Michigan falling to Wisconsin. One had Michigan State in the title game, but Wisconsin winning it.

Then there was one lone wolf media member who had Michigan State beating Wisconsin and being the Big Ten's team in the College Football Playoff.

Wonder who it was?

Big Ten media days begin Monday in Chicago.

Still believe the right guy kills it in College Park.

Joe Moorhead might not be in Starksville long...

For some definition of "kills it." Unless the B1G gets smart and shakes up the divisions. It's an uphill battle for the terps vs fichigan/osu/psu/msu.

Absolutely... but PSU is killing in with DMV players and they just came back from the near death penalty experience.

Joe Moorhead turns Maryland into Oregon-East.

IMO of course.

I do agree with that, the idea they can have success there (8 wins on the reg?). But, how far can they go? Competing for a div title? Thaaaat's a tall order. It's the B1G's fault for making such idiotic divisions.

That was my first thought as well, but I wonder if some of the luster has faded for Jack

But he could sell the Granger crib and move to Winnetka. Say what you will, when it comes to conferences, there's the B1G ans then the other guys. That will be evident when superconference armageddon strikes and Texas, UVa, UNC, Duke & Vandy end up in the B1G.

I meant for Jack being an elite candidate.

Michigan Sucks.

We'll see about an upset against OSU today, but they've lost to Penn St, Wisconsin, and would probably be ranked by the conference behind Minnesota whether they win or lose. I don't see why we ever play them. They probably need us to beef up their non-conference schedule.

I have always felt they need us more than we need them.

There will be no fans permitted at Rutgers home games (5). Their home opener scheduled for Oct. 3 against Illinois. Their first game is against Ohio State in Columbus on Sept 26th. Rutgers has four away games.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy issued an executive order on Monday limiting outdoor gatherings to 500 people or fewer. Rutgers quickly announced that they will manage all venues in accordance with this directive.

Season ticket holders will receive information from the Rutgers Ticket Office regarding the next steps and options for their account.

Here’s what no Rutgers fans at home games will mean to the school’s financial fortunes

We have some new clarity on who is responsible for the Big Ten not playing ball.

Politics at play-
