I've never been to the opening game before (outside of my student years), but holy crap does it add to the anticipation of the start of the season. Normally I'd be "looking ahead" to Michigan, but I cannot wait for this game.

The last opening game I was at was against Kansas. Temp was like 90 that day. It was miserable in the stands.

So it just hit me, in 4 weeks we play Rice. For some reason I thought the first game was in September. Feels like this past year flew by.

Long story short I ended up buying 5 extra tickets to this game. They are all together, section 118, if anyone has interest PM me.

I predict a not-so-awesome win by around 10-14 points. Team comes out fast but they let off the gas and nothing really notable happens in the second half. People on this site flip the hell out. It's tradition.

i agree completely, but we beat temple by 22 and that never really felt like a blow out by any means. i just really NEED a replay of the 2012 opener. to many time i get my hopes up for a drubbing of a lesser opponent and the wins come but they are a little ugly to say the least.

Anything less than complete domination and a 28+ point victory will be disappointing to me personally. Assuming we figure out a way to contain Christian Covington, we should rush for 200+ yards like we did against Navy in 2012 (293 yards that day) and their young QB will have a hard time deciphering what our defense is throwing at him.

I'm of the belief a win is a win, but a dominating performance will go a long way in this team realizing their potential. Our players understand how much talent is on this team and all that's left for them to do is go out and prove it. A 10-14 point win isn't going to cut it.

Below is an in-depth USA Today preview on the Rice Owls from last month. Great read. SIAP.

An early blowout is extremely important to get our starters off the field and get young players some game experience.

I wonder how vanilla our O and D will be this opener to try and save everything for Michigan.

Rice worries me a tiny bit. Their coach is in his 8th year so they're not the typical C-USA team that learns a new system every couple of years. Their 4 losses last year were against very respectable teams (A&M, Miss State, Houston, and 9-4 North Texas. They beat Marshall by 17 who everyone expects to go undefeated this season. Plus they have a mobile QB which is always dangerous.

They don't have USF talent so I'm not expecting a repeat of that performance, but they could definitely hang with us for a half if we don't start off hot. Hell, we got off to an amazing start against Temple last year and only won 28-6.

A big, convincing win should do wonders for this football team heading into the Michigan game. The start of the Temple game last year looked like it was going to be that way, but Temple was pretty much in striking distance throughout. Stomp on Rice, and these guys will be feeling confident, and hopefully build on it for once against Michigan.

On the surface, your concern with Rice is warranted. They had an amazing season (by their standards) in 2013 and the continuity in the coaching staff/program shouldn't be discounted, but games are won and lost in the trenches and it's hard to believe we will be anything less than dominant in those areas. Rice returns only two starters on the OL (and will be breaking in a new, under-sized former walk-on center) and their front 7 on defense has huge question marks with the exception of an All-American talent in Covington. Elsewhere on the field (secondary, backs, receivers), we have a large advantage in speed and athleticism and even a vanilla O and/or D should still produce dominating results.

The mobile QB is a wildcard. If he plays like Gardner in last year's Michigan game (Fuck Michigan), maybe Rice keeps it close and the result is more Temple 2013 than Navy 2012, but I'm going to have faith and bet significantly on ND -23.5. Fuck Rice

I think the 4-3 will do well against mobile QBs this year, better than the 3-4 anyway. In a 3-4 the NT and DEs are made to be space eaters to allow the LBs to make plays. In the 4-3 it starts with the DTs controlling gaps while the DE's try to keep everything inside them and contain the QB. That should hopefully force the QBs and running game inside for our LBs, as long as our guys can execute.

Not sure it's been said but the countdown clock is off by 3 hours. It looks like it's counting down to 330pm PST, isn't it supposed to be a 330pm EST?

Fuck Michigan! That is all

So I placed a few bets while in Vegas for a 16 hour layover. I got up pretty good at the tables so threw $100 on ND to beat Rice by more than 23.5 and win more than 8.5 games. Still feel good about the 8.5 games but didn't realize Rice was a conference champ with some offense.

Thoughts?

Rice won ten games last year. I hate the idea of a match up with a competent underdog. I don't care how undersized they are, or how they got demolished in their bowl game.

I'm not sure I'd take Notre Dame -23.5.

The good news is I won at absolutely everything I played Sunday and placing those bets was with all good mojo working in my favor. If the line was better than 12/1 I would have placed some dough on a natty to fully cash in my mojo.

DL Derek Brown hasn't been to Fall Camp yet for "personal reasons" and it isn't looking good for him. So outside of Covington, Rice's d-line is unsettled.
