I don't want to make the playoffs this year. I'd rather go 10-2 (or 11-1 on the outside looking in) and play a New Year's Six Bowl against a beatable opponent than sneak in #4 and get trucksticked by Alabama by 4 touchdowns. 11-2 with a big bowl win is better than 11-2 and another embarrassment.

I'm with you. As much improved as we are we ain't there yet. It's a year two kind of thing for me. Next year these guys are monsters to be feared. Good times ahead.

anyojnne find it interesting the coaches poll lists an 0-2 florida st team at #25 and a 3-1 ND team is not in their top 25.
I know they played bama, but they also lost to nc st, have played 2 less games, and our loss was to 8th ranked Georgia team.

WVU beat Delaware state, east carolina and Kansas with a loss to va teach and they are ranked 23rd.

The lunacy behind it reminds of RPI rankings for basketball. Something like this:

"Iowa is currently ranked 8th in the RPI, with a 14-12 record, and their opponent's opponent's opponent's opponents' opponent's opponent's opponent's strength of schedule checks in at #2.

Notre Dame, who has a 20-6 record, checks in at 28th in the RPI. Their 27 point win against Iowa a month ago is hurting their SOS."

I thought it was pretty common knowledge we were drawing dead if OU won, and don't remember anyone saying there was more than the tiniest sliver of hope with a win against Stanford, no matter how convincing.

Luckily it worked itself out, because after another "Fiasco" Bowl, a big game against Bama probably would have been even worse.

Yeah, IIRC, our schedule/results were growing gradually less impressive each week in November of 2015. We dropped out of the top four after barely beating BC and it was pretty clear we'd need a lot of help to climb back in even if we had beaten Stanford. Which we didn't.

I love statistics, but this shit really is getting carried away. I happened to see on espn last night some bullshit nfl ranking they have. Who was number 1? The patriots, of course. Ahead of the Chiefs, the team that handled them in their own stadium. And we're 3 weeks into the season. It's not like there's some huge sample size to analyze. It's tough to give credence to a computer model or algorithm that after 3 weeks says the pats are better than the Chiefs. I mean I watched their game, they weren't.

Patriots also barely beat Houston.
Handled them Saints tho.

ND is one bullshit roughing the passer call away from being top 10. That's annoying.

Our ranking doesn't really matter unless/until we beat USC. But I'm starting to think this could be one of those seasons where our best win is a loss. Though if Miami can get by FSU they could well be undefeated/Top 10 when we play them.

Looking at the ranked one-loss teams, not sure why Florida, Louisville or Va Tech should be ahead of ND

Yes, including about 30% of the AP Pollsters.

Based on games played in '17 to date, they are the #1 team.

Based on last year's results and people who vote on season ending PROJECTIONS to win they not.

Therein lies the fallacy of the polls. A few vote for who's best based on actual games played, others based on past years games, and others on who they think will be the best at the end of the season.

Bama's '17 claim to fame is the win over FSU a team who isn't in the Top 25 in either poll. FSU got their first win of the season in Week 5, taking the lead for the win in the last minute of play against ... Wake Forest.

Alabama’s average margin of victory is 38. Clemson has been good but thinking Alabama doesn’t deserve to be #1 is questionable.

SOS

SOS

With SEC teams dropping out of the top 25 and Week 7's Playoff rankings approaching, Alabama has one team on their schedule that is in the Top 25, Auburn (#12) with the possibility of playing either Georgia (#5) or Florida (#22) to improve their SOS. Florida has some tough games ahead. No teams they have beaten is currently in the top 25.

Clemson has wins over #13 Louisville and #16 Va Tech, and a game against NC State (#24) with the possibility of meeting Miami (#13).

ND has their loss to Ga (#5) and have Miami (#13), USC (#14), NCSt (#24) on their schedule. Navy could well move into the Top 25. Stanford has two losses and has Wash, Wash St, Ore and Utah to play, so you don't bank on them to crack the top 25.

Miami certainly looks like the better team right now. But it's a rivalry game, in Tallahassee, and FSU still has a load of talent. I wouldn't call it a gimme.
My point was except maybe Va Tech, FSU is the only team with any real shot to beat Miami before they play us. So, good chance they'll be undefeated and, probably ranked in at least the top eight or so by then. Which likely makes Miami our best shot for a win that will actually impress voters.

Bama just beat a conf opponent 66-3 , nuff said

And another conf opponent just lost to........Troy. While Bama may be the top team in the country, the SEC is far from what it is talked up to be.

I agree, but Louisville v ND would be a shootout and fun to watch. Not sure we come out on top in that one.

Even if we win out, we might face what I will grandly call the "playoff paradox": you don't want to lose to the best team on your schedule, because they will/may then take your playoff spot. You'd rather lose to a team somewhere in the 7-25 range: a good team but not a team that will take your spot. If UGA wins out and we win out, they get our spot. If we are 11-1 and they are 11-1 with a loss in the SEC title game, then Alabama will get their spot but I doubt we then take somebody else's spot. (I suppose it's possible to take USC's "spot," but that won't get us in with the odds of there being 12-0 or 11-1 teams from the other conferences.)

In that scenario we'll end 11-1 and wish we had lost to MSU rather than UGA. Which would be annoying. Moving to an eight team playoff is hugely important for ND.

I think the body of work shows at this point that Clemson should be #1. They completely owned 2 top 20 teams in their backyard where Alabama hasn't played anyone currently in the top 25.

I think it's Clemson 1 and Alabama a close 2nd. They both somehow again look like the cream of the crop with everyone trying desperately to get to their level.
