He was saying he was lazy while there, not before hand. He was working with Kelly leading up to the event.

Listen. I think this young cat is going to be a stud, but why the hell wasn't he been workin'? You're going to the Elite11, a national competition with the country's best QB's. Why weren't you working your ass off prior?

He was saying he was lazy while there, not before hand. He was working with Kelly leading up to the event.

Sorry. I should have phrased that better. Like lucky said, I'm sure he had been working, but I am also sure it was hampered due to the pandemic. He specifically states that during the competition he was "lazy" and explains it as:
“I was kind of just throwing with my arm. Then when I threw with just my arm and don't use my bottom half, I wasn't really coming through with my hips. I was just cutting with my arm and then my front shoulder starts getting lazy, which is what I was talking about with being lazy. My front shoulder just kind of sprays out from getting lazy. So, it all starts there and it's just keeping my front shoulder in and having a good connection with my upper and lower half."

Either way, it sounds like he's as confident as ever after having a good week of practice with Kelly.

So, I am confused, am I supposed to be freaking out about his work ethic or his QB coach?

Yes.

They should just drop this scrub and find the next Ian Book/Brendon Clark

People crack me up on here.

Is he planning on enrolling early? If so, his next snap may be in an ND uniform as it sounds as if there won’t be High School sports until Jan at the earliest.

Yes. That's why he transferred to Helix. Since all of his classes are online, he should move to SB tomorrow, take his classes and start working out on the down low. Let Tommy rid him of the Kent Tekulve arm motion.

If the High school seasons don't go ahead the powers that be should allow that sort of thing to happen.
Is there anything currently in the rules stopping such a thing?

What about his answer makes you think that?

He essentially said he was out of practice and had become "lazy". He wasn't using his lower body like he should and the result was his odd throwing motion in an attempt to make up for the lost power that would have come from using his lower body.

Looking back on it, he sees this now, and he has been able to get back into the swing of things.

Let the kid play his senior year and get to ND before getting down on him why don't you? He still made the Elite 11.

I wasnt really getting down on him but I have now lowered expectation which is good because they were probably at a stupidly high level. Now I have stupidly high expectations for Drew Pyne.

Was better this weekend in Indy apparently. Still wasn't great though. Not much juice on his ball. Still throwing from the lower arm slot. Wiltfong did not include him in his top 5. Also, he looks shorter then 6'2. Seen a picture of him standing next to Caleb Williams. Much shorter

Yes I know, wait til he puts the pads on....

Good news is my expectations are much lower. I was starting to build him up as the chosen one. May still have a great career, obviously.

So, who we looking at for ‘22? :)

I’m not concerned by his performances as much as I am the response. The denying or ignoring of the issue is concerning. The denying of the glaring changes he’s made to his throwing motion is worrisome. I’d much rather see the prospect be open about making changes, acknowledge they didn’t work, and move on. Instead his camp has seemingly dug in on this new motion but acting as if they haven’t. And are not going to address it. I still think he’s got loads of potential but I do hope this is being addressed by Rees.

They've got a year to figure it out, but it certainly looks like he's getting bad advice. If it's coming from Rees/Kelly then I'm VERY worried. From people who have seen the before-and-after it's not even close.

Well, remember this comment from last years fall camp pressers:

BRIAN KELLY: We don’t touch it. We stay away from it. I’ve always philosophically stayed away from motions. It’s just you’re entering into an area where they’ve had so many reps at it, to get into changing motions, I’ve never had much success with it. Let them be who they are. I think, by and large, most of it is the mental aspect of the game. Get their confidence back, work on their footwork. If you do those things, I think you’re better off. We stay away from trying to make major — any arm angle throws. I just haven’t had a lot of success with it.

So as it relates to Phil, we haven’t been tinkering or tweaking with his motion. We just want him to get back to being confident about who he is, and I’ve seen that. I’ve seen the way he walks around this building now. I think you’re going to see a guy that’s had really good success this year.”

There are other example, I believe with Golson, where BK more or less said that he won't teach mechanics. So, I have my doubts its coming from him. Not sure about Tommy. But either way, I hope that he gets it corrected fast because if he tries to make this work, I don't think the coaches will mess around with him or it once he is here. If it's not working, they will turn their attention elsewhere. I am really concerned with this.

I think it’s very noticeable just from watching the workout film. I envision Taylor Kelly preaching the need for a quicker release and in the process they’ve destroyed what he had. He needs to get back with Hernandez and have him focus on stretching it back out.

Tyler should go get a 1x1 at the Foundry on Eddy Street and be less than a mile from the Gug NOW. Get a 4 month rental and then move into his dorm in January. Get him working out in the South Bend area and around the team while taking his last few classes online. That’d be the best. He’s not doing himself any favors by staying in San Diego right now.

https://notredame.rivals.com/news/qb-coach-discusses-tyler-buchner-s-performance-at-qb-collective

Apparently Tyler was working with his old QB coach at the QB Collective event in Indy this weekend. Hernandez (the QB Coach) noticed the lower arm slot and pushing the ball and corrected it. Even from that one clip we got from the event, Tyler does look like he has more zip on the ball. Also, I'm a lot less worried now than during the Elite 11. Yeah, his throwing motion doesn't look like the classic QB, but then again neither does Mahomes and he just signed a half billion dollar contract. In fact, Tyler kind of looks like Mahomes or Rodgers with his motion.

I'd rather have him on campus with our coaches than in high school playing football where he could get hurt.

I don't see the benefit of staying. His college career will be helped by enrolling early

Personally, I think a lot of it depends on when the college season is, when that determination is made, and what practices look like.

If many of the distancing measures are still in place in the spring, then teams may split up practices so that there is less risk of a whole position group being forced out at the same time. If that is the case, either with a spring season or a normal spring practice schedule, I probably want Tyler to EE because he could get a lot of reps against college defenses.

If the season is played in the spring but practices are normal, I probably want him to play his HS season because he would likely be fourth on the depth chart and would get very few (if any) reps.

If the season is played this fall and then there is a normal spring practice schedule, then I really don't know. At that point some of the other considerations come in. One idea some people had was that if he plans to EE, with his HS classes online he could potentially move out to South Bend and get some work in with the receivers, especially the younger guys who might not get practice reps but will be his targets when he starts. Another benefit would be that he could potentially help show other recruits around campus if the same restrictions are still in place.

So I really don't know what the best option is right now. I think too many things that could effect his decision are still yet to be decided to really say what the best option will be. The best thing to do right now would probably be to put himself in a position where those options all stay open.
