How long do we have to wait before seeing the Statue of Liberty play? Or Elmer picking up the ball on the Fumblerooski and getting the first down. Possibilities are endless.

Would be pretty bad-ass to see something like that on then1st play from scrimmage against Texas lol

That Vine is like the living embodiment of your new defensive coordinator. Sharks don't ponder shit.

Haven't heard this before but Lou at BGI is saying that there is some talk on the street that Hounshell will be given a look as a blocking TE. He can't confirm or deny this to be true.

Sampson mentioned a week or so ago that he was working out with the TE group as well.

I know Mike Frank has mentioned that in Power Hour a few times. Do they just need a blocking tight end for spring practice? Or is this a possible 5th year?

Very strange. I assume the staff is giving him a chance to earn his way back for a 5Y, and his odds of doing so as the #2 inline TE are much better than as a DL. Though Hounshell's failure to see the field thus far seems most attributable to his inability to stay healthy; not his talent, motivation or position fit. Moving him to TE isn't going to increase his chances of avoiding injury.

Nor do I think he's likely to make the 2-deep there. He'll have to beat either Smythe or Luatua. Glad the staff is giving him a shot, though.

Kelly said in his signing day presser that he didn't know how we were going to get under 85 this year, but he knew that we might need most of the summer to get there. (The rules don't require the roster actually to be cut down to 85 until August.)

That comment plus this Hounshell news makes me wonder if we are taking provisional 5th years this year ... you can hang around for spring practice and try to earn a spot, but if we don't have some attrition by the time August rolls around, we can't keep you.

Just an educated guess by me.

Yea, glad they're getting him some run time and at least a shot but I don't see him being a big plus over Luatua at that position. Essentially thats what he have to be in order for it to make sense.

Hopefully this points to a plan to run the ball more this year.

Yes tomorrow is the presser at noon.

Maybe I missed it, but has Kelly mentioned the three other new hires in the football program? He mentioned at the press conference announcing the new staff additions that three others would be hired and needed to be cleared by HR. Many have assumed Jeff Quinn is one of them. Perhaps they will be announced tomorrow?

I think it adds up to having him block inline as well and it makes sense. After Smythe and Luatua, we don't really have anymore inline TEs. Heurman just isn't big enough and Jones will be a incoming fresh and I don't see him manhandling anyone from an inline position just yet. If we plan on running the ball more, I agree we need to have more than two blocking TEs. Particularly if either Smythe or Luatua gets hurt.

Also if our DLine takes a hit from the injury bug, he could be depth there as well.

What's interesting about Hounshell is he's a 5Y candidate but actually has two more years of eligibility because he missed two seasons due to injury. I assumed he'd spend those two seasons somewhere else. Can't wait to hear what BK says tomorrow about 5Y players.
