De'Anthony Thomas was the comparison that came to mind for me.

I'm not sure I see that. In Thomas' HS highlights he was jumping and darting all over the field with insane short area + lateral quickness, but actually lacked elite straight line speed.

Tyree does not make the same kind of moves and decelerates significantly when he changes direction. Tyree runs north/south with way more toughness than DAT and has better speed in the open field.

Didn't want to seem down on the kid, because I'm very excited to have him, but I had the same thought. He's definitely a homerun threat, but I'm a little concerned about the workload given his size. He definitely doesn't remind me of Riddick, because I felt like Riddick was shifty over everything else. He seems more like a one cut and go back a la Adams (without being absolutely huge like Adams).

Yeah, Riddick is almost a polar opposite. Riddick was shifty and quick but very slow (by RB standards) when it came to straight line speed. He did not have the ability to run away from people in the open field.

I'm not seeing Tyree break ankles in those highlights. I am seeing him finish 10+ yards away from the closest defender when he gets a crease. We'll have to see how he develops, but honestly the best comp might end up being someone like Bryce Love.

Bryce Love was thicker and a little slower, but was the same height and had his value by attacking creases north-south at full speed and looking for home runs.

I couldn't disagree more with the comparisons to GAIII.

Tyree is more elusive than some are giving him credit for. He can stop and go within a split second, and he's very likely the fastest back ND has had in a very long time.

He's also a much tougher runner and far more versatile than GAIII was. I do think he relies a bit more on being a one-cut type of back, but he is also very deadly in the slot and is a willing pass blocker.

There's a reason he is a top of the list offensive recruit for several top tier programs.

Seems like a reasonable comp and both will be coached by the same guy. So, that probably helps with Tyree's development.

I do agree that he has some stiffness in his hips which is fairly common for elite sprinters. It also seems to make him a really nice pairing with Kyren Williams from last cycle. Who, by all accounts (timed shuttles), has elite quickness but lacks the elite top end speed.

GAIII is a weird comparison to try and make with any player because he had such an odd physical skillset.

He was a good one-cut runner with elite straight-line speed, but he had no vision, he had to gear-down and the gear back up after a cut, and he had the most stiff hips I've ever seen on a skill player at the college level.

Josh Adams and Jonas Gray were tremendous one-cut runners. GAIII was a tremendous "get him to the sideline and don't even count on him for a cut, if possible" runner.

I'm loving what the staff is doing with recruiting if we want any change at beating a bama or this clemson team they need to keep adding speed. Lenzy, Keys, and hopefully Tyree is a start.

Reminds me of Armando Allen, as far as an ND RB's high school film.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNR84Cz55Bk

For those who remember, Allen was small and very fast, but played very tough and was somewhat of a bruiser until he inevitably injured himself. He was the compliment to Robert Hughes, a massive 230 lb. back who tried to run like a nimble scat back until mid-way through his senior year. (of course all is forgiven for RH, who was clearly saving his entire career to sneak attack SC, in that one glorious game).

Ahhhhh, the Weis years!

Good lord that's a good comp. At his weight it probably won't be good to make him a bell cow out of the backfield but use him as a general offensive weapon at RB/Slot, especially with a stable of good TE's and defensive coordinators will have fits.

GAIII never carried the ball enough to be considered a RB IMO.

All of these comparisons, but not the obvious. Are you guys too young to remember Rocket?

Atkinson was our second-leading rusher (both in yards and carries) in 2013. Though that may say more about our weak RB stable that year than it does about Atkinson.

Since you brought up Rocket, a fun fact: He and GAIII had almost the exact same number of plays from scrimmage in their junior years (both left ND after three seasons). Rocket had twice as many yards.

I would have never guessed that. Was it many?

GAIII ran very hesitant IMO. The Rocket had no fear and just launched once he had the ball. Head north immediately.

93 carries, 555 yards (McDaniel led with ~150 carries. Folston was a little behind GAIII with about 85.

Agree he wasn’t a natural RB though, more of a kick returner pressed into action as a tailback. And give me a north-south runner every damn day. If Tyree plays like Bryce Love I’d be thrilled.

Here's a link to an open letter Love wrote to NFL GMs ... as well as clips of his running, frequently through or off tackle and breaking to the outside.

There is one clip of Love in a San Diego v Stanford game stepping up in Pass Protection, picking up a blitzing MLB 2 yds deep in his own backfield burrowing into the MLB and DRIVING him BACKWARDS for 5 yds.

Impressive. Even more impressive this is a 5-9, 201 back not the 6-2, 235 Bus. Love was 5-9, 180 as a HS Senior. Tyree's 5-9, 178, 3 months before his Senior season begins. Comparable size.

Interesting comments by Love on Pass Pro considering the frequency of game day comments here when a poster's favorite ND back du jour was riding the bench because he threw chicken wing blocks with no where near the intensity or contact of the average KMart shopper on Black Friday.

Dear NFL GMs,

My name is Bryce Love, and I’m the best running back in this draft.

...

I can tell you straight up that I’ve grown by leaps and bounds over the past year in terms of being a complete, do-it-all running back.

Actually, strike that. I can show you.

I can tell you straight up that I’ve grown by leaps and bounds over the past year in terms of being a complete, do-it-all running back.

Those videos up above, don’t get me wrong … they’re exciting. It’s great to run fast, hurdle defenders, break tackles and stiff-arm dudes on your way to the end zone.

But here’s what I’m talking about right now. Keep an eye on the middle linebacker coming in hot.

Pass protection, man. It’s so important — crucial really. And I’m all about it at this point.

It may not be sexy. And it doesn’t end up with a cool celebration in the end zone, but if you want to be considered a top-flight back in the league you better know how to protect your franchise quarterback. You better be able to pick up blitzes, and stand up linebackers, and pretty much have eyes in the back of your head.

I honestly believe that pass protection has now become one of the things I’m best at. And I take immense pride in that — in keeping my quarterback clean.

Whereas before I was a guy who could take it to the house and be a threat on first and second down, now I’m someone who has worked hard to become a legitimate three-down back. I’m a guy who can help your team make big plays, and win games, even when I don’t have the ball. And that’s huge.

Watch his highlights from the recent camps. They're doing LB-RB drills and guys can't even get a hand on him.

He has plenty of shake/wiggle but he doesn't really need it in high school. He's so fast he just hits any opening and presses the gas.

I honestly think he'll be used just like Theo and like we hope Jafar is used this fall. Just most of these guys can't touch Tyree's 55 time.

The De'Anthony Thomas comparison is one I like but I would add that he's De'Anthony Thomas with natural football instinct which IMO De'Anthony Thomas didn't have.

This is DAT's HS film:<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zL7NGfXErEE" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I don't really get the comparison, their styles are completely different. DAT was all about lateral explosion and "make you miss" there is none of that in Tyree's film.

Bryce Love is the best comp in terms of size/running style/breakaway speed.

It is by no means a perfect comparison. You're right in the sense that De'Anthony Thomas was more about twitchy speed and more so quickness and using it laterally. What I ment by the comparison is that he has that same raw ability to De'Anthony Thomas but with natural RB/WR instincts and football IQ. Whereas De'Anthony Thomas IMO was more of athlete playing football rather than Tyree with the same level of athlete but one who is a natural football player.

I see more McCaffrey than Love though.

I would feel much better in Tony Alford was running this recruitment. Just feels like one that Alford would win. Man do we miss his recruiting and just the man he is. I know he isn't coming back to ND, I'm just saying this is a recruitment Alford would be all over. Not saying Denson isn't. I think him and Jordan Johnson are the top two targets on the board on the offensive side of the football for us.

Johnson
Tyree
And a franchise LT are must gets in this class

Just saw this request. Looking good so far.
