Loy said that Elliot made his CB after talking to Bama's staff, which sounds like a bit of a veiled criticism on his part.

Without looking at any film, I've gone back and really done some in depth study of his rankings, and I have to admit that I really like what I see.

Regarding position rankings, I look for low numbers. Single digit numbers are the best. One of the things that instantly jumped out to me was just how low the number next to his position is: 1. Not a lot of kids get 1's. In my experience breaking down position rankings, it doesn't get much better than 1. Zero is technically better, but that is rarer than a 4.1 40 yd.

I was also impressed by how close to 100 his score was. 98 is way closer than 97, and was better than 88. Impressive.

I was a little disappointed by how he stars, he tend to go about 4. But that can change. The rankings services like some drama. Hopefully, they will see some upside in bumping and he can 5.

Long story short, based on his #1 position ranking, his 98 score, and his high 4-star rating, I predict that not a single film evaluation will call into question his speed--even if you switched out his tape with Drew Tranquill's or Jafar Armstrong's.

I will be much much more happy to land him than some guy with much, much smaller numbers, like CJ Procise or Will Fuller. Whether or not he pans out, his thread will be devoid of whining from my fellow Service Ranking Evaluators. ;)

Long time caller, first time listener. You said you were disappointed that he only stars 4, do you think that weakness will stop him from earning that coveted 5th star? I'll hang up and listen.

Greyhammer,

Thanks for listening. Yes I do think it hurts him. I've never seen a single 4-star prospect on Rivals, who is also ranked a 5-star on Rivals. It just doesn't happen. To become a 5 star he's going to just have to stop being a 4-star altogether. It's as simple as that. So as long as I keep seeing those 4 stars all over his page, I'm just not going to call him a 5-star.

Now, 247 has some 4-stars ranked as 5-stars, based on that "new math" or complex numbers or something. So that might give some listeners some hope. But I'm also hearing the FBI is looking into those calculations based on the Dawkins tapes--so take it for what it's worth.

I'll tell you what, though, Tyrees' chances are a lot better than almost any 3 star I've read about this year. Those kids need 2--that's over 93% of what a 4-star needs. Rankings services hate to give two extra stars to 3 star players that aren't 6-8 OTs that finally choose football, and I've never seen them give two extra stars to a 4-star player ever. PERIOD.

So right now, I'm comfortable arguing that he is 1 better than all the 3-star players we have, but likely 1 worse than the 5 stars we are recruiting. It's just hard to avoid that conclusion.

I'm not saying you're not making sense to others, but I read this twice and I'm so confused. I have no idea what you're saying.

I know no one wants to think about it, including me, but I have no idea what plan b is if Tyree goes elsewhere. Looking at who they've offered, it seems to be a bunch of guys that either A.) we haven't heard their name since they got an offer or B.) things seemed to be going well but we haven't heard anything in a while.

I hope this doesn't turn into a classic Charlie Weis recruitment.

I believe the thorough analysis is that Chris, a 4 star, is at least 1 star better than any three star out there, but is also worse than a 5 star, which is really going to hurt him when the paysites hand our their final star rankings.

Yes. Well said. :)

I was just being stupid.

Sometimes I get the distinct impression that people's entire evaluation of a recruit is looking at their star rankings.

If its high, everything they see on film is good and everything they read is good, and recruiting is obviously going great. If its low, the kid is slow, everything bad is true, and recruiting is a disaster.

But if I said this when we landed some 3-star the coaches really like, with great tape, I look like a homer making excuses.

I had similar thoughts when Dexter ran a 4.58. He's so darn fast, as we all saw a hundred times, but now he is officially slow. If you are a scout, you have to consider game speed. Some pretend to, but most just go with the 40 and then pretend that's what they see in the game.

Well it's certainly not A because we've heard about a few guys. For example, after Tyree's Oklahoma visit we sent Taylor down to VA to visit with him. While that was taking place we sent Long to Ohio to visit Trayanum and McClain. We've visited Edwards twice in the last weeks. They are certainly recruiting other RB's as they are considering taking 2.

Honestly think we lead with Tirek Murphy but we haven’t been pushing hard for him lately if we want him he could be ours I believe

Adam Friedman did as well over on Rivals last week. He covers Virginia recruiting too, that has to hold some weight.

I've missed your posts. Of course, our coaching staff that has been in to see him twice in the last month isn't pushing hard for the #1 APB in the country. Thanks for the info.

**DERP - in fairness to IFJM, he did say Tirek Murphy in Chris Tyree's thread. I assumed he meant Tyree. He's probably right about Tirek.

- Hasn't scheduled a visit to Bama
- Said that he's already decided on where he's going
- Has an ND OV for June
Seems like we should feel pretty good here, lol.

We better negotiate a big salary bump for our RB coach if Tyree signs. He's been here for a few months and he's already big game hunting.

And I want to fast forward and get Tyree on campus.

If there are no commitments between now and then, a commitment from Chris Tyree would put the class at 5th, nationally, with a rating of 208.45

this class is only missing stud secondary talent to be complete imo if we land some of the guys that are already crystal balled to us.
