Shouldn't this have been expected? We recruited him because he was a physical freak...him proving that during workouts doesn't change the status quo on him as a project. Not intended as a slight, I'm just saying if he was described as a freak after a week of spring practice it would be more noteworthy.

He’s an old freshman, I think that does/will matter here. Make that 20-24/25 seems advantageous here versus 18-22/23.

It absolutely matters and always will. Someone that is 2-4 years older will be more mature physically, but just as important, more mature mentally.

Old coach saying, "Give me good group of seniors over a good group of juniors anyday".

I’ll be interested to see his official height when they release the spring roster. If he’s 6’7” or more I wonder if he grows into a different position. There are OL and TE that play at that height, but not as many DEs that I can recall.

But he's a FREAK and I suppose freaks can play DE!

Willing to bet he's never named a captain. A nickname proclaiming him to be a good leader could take things off the rails quickly.

I will be pleasantly surprised if he ever becomes a regular contributor. There is a lot that goes into being a stud DE other than height.
I base this on watching his film against subpar German HS level players. It was underwhelming. Hopefully he proves my expectations completely wrong and becomes a starter by year 3.

This dude screams rural Minnesota kid that ends up at North Dakota State and ends up in the NFL because he hasn't ever played against good competition or had real coaching until college.

There are a ton of athletes in the world. Give him a shot at least.

What was the kid's name from South Dakota that walked on a few years ago as a DT, who also played running back at his High School. at 300lbs. I thought he would have a chance to eventually play because of his size and athleticism.

6'6"/250lb kid from Germany that shows up as a freshman and draws nothing but rave reviews...

Won't see the field
He'll never be a captain
Sounds like Bruce Heggie (not sure where that comes from)

5'8"/165lb kid from Florida shows up with a little baggage and some underwhelming academic background

We need this kid on the field
If BK wants to take us to the next level, this is the guy to do it
Sounds like a smaller Randy Moss

Recruiting as a college coach is a crapshoot for the most part. Recruiting as a guy sitting in front of his laptop is foolproof.

In Prister's defensive rundown he mentions Alex being 6'6 7/8 247. Unsure if that's the official measurement from ND as his profile on UND.com says 6'6 1/2. Either way, seems like he's actually that tall.

You mean David and Jason, right? Didn't we just offer a few DEs? I thought Turner got an offer in June.

Hope you're right on Botelho. Like I said, I love him, and pretty confident in him.

No, I meant Alex because we offered him and took his commitment, last cycle, early and never looked back. Same goes for Onye this cycle.

The reason for new DE offers this cycle is because Abiara is/was balking on his commitment. They had no plans of it outside of that.

Not entirely true on Alex. While he was one of the last offered, he committed pretty quick. And were still pushing for McGregor after Alex's commit (pretty sure he visited in the spring), and we offered Collins and Ivey also after Alex's commit.

Without getting too far OT, Alex wasn't one of the last offered. He was offered Nov. of 2018 which is quite early for his respective cycle (that would be before Hamilton in his respective class).

I also wouldn't categorize any of those recruitments as recruiting over him. When they took his commitment, he was the only DE commit until April. So, of course they're going to be sending out other offers and recruit other players. They were going to recruit McGregor, regardless of who committed early, until the end due to the his longstanding relationship with Elston. I believe there was only a single DE OV in the Summer or Fall and that was Mitchel Melton (recruited at Drop) that wasn't an ND commit.

So, Elston travels to Germany to get Alex's commitment, while we don't schedule any other Summer or Fall OV's for another DE. Seems obvious they were happy with that being the class. That is outside of maybe an elite few. And that's just how recruiting works at every position. If you had two Clowney's in a class and a 3rd wanted in, you take the third.

I stand by my statement. They took Alex's commitment and never looked back. He was never recruited over. They sent out some Spring offers that they didn't follow up on and come Fall they stuck with the DL class they had. If ND wanted too, they could've got some guys on campus for OV's if Elston was concerned with Alex.

And, it sounds like the more they've seen of the young man the more impressed they've been. ISD said the staff raved about him when he showed up on campus. Will be interesting to follow.

Any idea on if he stayed in the US this summer? Curious on if he is able to make it back to SB for some sort of fall camp given the travel limitations that the Euro is imposing.
