Not entirely true on Alex. While he was one of the last offered, he committed pretty quick. And were still pushing for McGregor after Alex's commit (pretty sure he visited in the spring), and we offered Collins and Ivey also after Alex's commit.
Without getting too far OT, Alex wasn't one of the last offered. He was offered Nov. of 2018 which is quite early for his respective cycle (that would be before Hamilton in his respective class).
I also wouldn't categorize any of those recruitments as recruiting over him. When they took his commitment, he was the only DE commit until April. So, of course they're going to be sending out other offers and recruit other players. They were going to recruit McGregor, regardless of who committed early, until the end due to the his longstanding relationship with Elston. I believe there was only a single DE OV in the Summer or Fall and that was Mitchel Melton (recruited at Drop) that wasn't an ND commit.
So, Elston travels to Germany to get Alex's commitment, while we don't schedule any other Summer or Fall OV's for another DE. Seems obvious they were happy with that being the class. That is outside of maybe an elite few. And that's just how recruiting works at every position. If you had two Clowney's in a class and a 3rd wanted in, you take the third.
I stand by my statement. They took Alex's commitment and never looked back. He was never recruited over. They sent out some Spring offers that they didn't follow up on and come Fall they stuck with the DL class they had. If ND wanted too, they could've got some guys on campus for OV's if Elston was concerned with Alex.
And, it sounds like the more they've seen of the young man the more impressed they've been. ISD said the staff raved about him when he showed up on campus. Will be interesting to follow.
