He is but he is the best of what we have IMO... If Cole Luke can develop into a lock down corner, we can shade coverage to Nick's side and help him out
I wouldn't mind letting Vaughn at least split reps with him.

And you all laughed at me when I was concerned at CB depth when Butler and Watkins were going to miss large amount of time to injury...hahahaha

I never laugh when it comes to defensive depth. Seems like we're always one ACL away from trouble.

You've mentioned this like 4 times since Saturday lol. Who laughed at you?

Most of us were well aware of the fact that our secondary was/is one catastrophic injury away from being in trouble. We were/are a bit better suited to handle losses at corner than we are at safety, but neither is in a great spot.

I feel just as confident with Coleman at CB as I did with Butler. In fact, I'm kind of glad that Butler was out because he DEFINITIVELY would have played over the freshmen. That is how Kelly rolls.

And I am not even sure I think there is going to be a long term drop-off at CB from losing Crawford.

The loss, to me, is at Nickle--even though I like J. Love.

Agreed throughout! Good post!

I am glad Kelly is being forced to play the young guys this year.

And I want to see what love has at nickel. I think he may surprise.

Also, I knew he was a bit behind but I would like to see what Troy Pride, Jr is up to, as well!

None of those people "laughed at you" though haha. Those are just posts about why things might be okay.

In terms of posts directed at you in that thread, I see a bunch of people agreeing with you, or else arguing that things could be okay, considering the depth options weren't great in the first place.

I think we need to give him more than a game before we start calling for Vaughn to be the starter. If he's still struggling against Duke and NC State, then I'll want Vaughn to start too.

Fair, but I'm preparing Coleman/Vaughn as 1a/1b. If we go through the first half against MSU and he isn't playing well or is playing as poorly as he did against Texas, I'd have a short leash on him.

FWIW, I expect he'll start to play better at some point. This just isn't the time to be stubborn with young players. Prepare them all and play who is performing, too much at stake.

If he is still struggling he needs to be pulled before the NC State game as long as Vaughn is remotely competent. Honestly if halfway through the Duje game he is still struggling he probably needs to get pulled.

Agree. I would like to see them split reps at corner this week. You can't fool around and keep throwing him out their if he struggles the first half this week. This is a huge game that the team has to win!

I was told that he never really played defense before college. So he needs time . We need to give him time.

Bogs alluded to him not playing Defense till college.....I'll curb my enthusiasm about his lack of fundamentals and give him more time to develop.

I'm serious, can a scholarship player be cut? He is about as bad of a player as I've ever seen.

I hate to pile on, but his effort and lack of any ability to tackle on the punt before halftime is scary. He should not see the field in any matter the rest of this season. He needs to be taught the basics, so next year he won't be a liability.

I'll pile on, because I don't think the problem is Nick Coleman. The man can't play football at this level.

The problems I see are institutional and stubborn coaching.

Institutional: The 40 Year Commitment pitch has to go. This is not specific to Coleman but I just can't see how this helps motivate 17yr old kids to fight, compete, and struggle to get better. Their lives are set the minute they sign their papers. In a practical sense, I don't see any harm in cutting a few players every year and doing what in fact today's poster suggests. Can't play? No scholarship renewal.

Sutbborn coaching: It's beyond a familiar refrain but all too common under this regime we see guys continuing to see the field who we all agree are not prepared or capable. I have a list of 12 guys in my head. Why are no adjustments ever made?

Nick Coleman should not see the field again.

Absolutely should not be able to pull a young man's scholarship. You should commit to him for 4 years like you expect him to do for the team.

Exactly. If he sucks, bench him. If you don't have anyone else better, that's a "you" problem for bringing in people who can't play at the level necessary to win.

As it's been hashed out in previous posts.....yes, multiple posts, Nick has not played defense until he got to Notre Dame. I don't doubt that he's not had to tackle in practice while in HS, but he's learning, and, by all accounts, he's willing to learn.

Doesn't mean he should be on the field right now. That was a joke attempt on the punt return. Lucky Claypool hustled and ran the guy down from behind.

Put him on the scout team and let him carry the ball in much needed tackling drills. he can't cover, he can't tackle WTF?! i hope he is paying attention in class and has a majkr that isnt the usual "Film & Television". Few of these DBs are going pro so at least ND is doing right by working hard to insure they are set up for real life when they leave.
