Chargers 90-in-90: LB Drue Tranquill

Should he not make their 53 man roster, I'd pick him up. He's listed as third string on the Chargers just released depth chart - but then so is Tillery.

I mean, this was the 2nd from last paragraph in the article you linked...

Odds of making the roster/What to expect in 2019

Tranquill is set to be a shoe-in to make the final 53-man roster as a back-up across all linebacker positions. He has played a little at each Will, Mike, and Sam linebacker and should replace Nick Dzubnar as the team’s back-up Mike linebacker going forward.

Happy for Drew and hope he makes the roster. Now don't kill me. Drew was in good position, but that INT was all QB. Where the heck did that form come from? Dude is starting to go fetal position before he throws the ball.

he'll make the 53. He's the primary backup at Weak and Strongside LB

Awesome to see for Drue. Also, those white helmets for the Chargers are sweet.

Chargers sites continue to project Drue in the final 53, taking the final LB spot. If they take eight LBs, then they'll include Nick Dzubnar. Uchenna Nwosu, starting OLB, left the last game with an apparent injury. No word on the extent yet.

Isaac Rochell and Jerry Tillery are currently listed as second string.

He’s getting it done on D too. Saved a first down with a pummeling tackle. He looks smaller in those unis

Finished second on the team in tackles.

Tranquill’s 75 tackles ranked second on the entire team, behind only Thomas Davis. That’s not too shabby for a guy who was on the field just over one-third of the time. But the Chargers also like to switch things up at the linebacker position.

Tranquill actually ended up having more total defensive snaps than Uchenna Nwosu, Denzel Perryman, Kyzir White and Jatavis Brown. One has to wonder what kind of impact Tranquill might have if he is on the field more often.

That is a decision the Chargers will have to weigh this offseason, but it’s also likely they are happy with him in the same role as well.

Who's in an IDP fantasy football league, an avid ND football fan, and got outbid for Tranquill on the waiver wires? This guy right here. D'oh!

The Chargers found some real value in Tranquill, who was drafted in the fourth round with the 130th pick.

Contract details from Spotrac:

In 2020, Tranquill will earn a base salary of $585,000, while carrying a cap hit of $749,702 and a dead cap value of $494,106.
The signing bonus is spread out over the four years and the annual salary escalates from $495k last year to $765k in 2022.

In comparison, Jerry Tillery, drafted in the first round with pick 28 per Spotrac:

Tranquill got a nice write-up by writeup as the "most underrated player" on the Chargers https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-most-underrated-player-on-all-32-nfl-teams-ahead-of-the-2020-nfl-season

Athleticism like Tranquill displayed at the 2019 NFL Combine (4.57 second 40-yard dash, 6.94 second three-cone and a 37.5-inch vertical jump) married with strong coverage results coming out of college (80-plus coverage grades in each of his last two seasons) is a recipe for success in the pros. As a fourth-round pick, Tranquill had a limited role in his first season as a member of the Chargers’ defense, but he did some promising things during his time on the field, earning a 66.6 overall grade for the year. Even with the Chargers trading back up into the first round to take Kenneth Murray, there is plenty of reason to expect the second-year player out of Notre Dame to take another step forward in 2020.

I feel so bad for Drue...due to breakout this year...Despite this unfortunate setback, there is no other player that I have full confidence in coming back stronger than ever...prayers out to him

Didn’t flip to the channel until he was on the cart but seen some pics on Twitter.. It looked pretty gruesome. His foot was not going the right way...
