Be careful when criticizing the cop, LAX.

Some might think that all of the credible evidence that's been gathered in support of Butler's defense is just a result of homerism, or biased accounts from friends, fans, and significant others.

Also, Butler admitted to being drunk and emotional, which completely excuses anything that happened, and clearly means the cops were within their bounds, whether or not they acted out of turn and lied on their reports after refusing to take witness statements.

SOUTH BEND -- Tom Stevens' lawyer says the local golfer never tried to hit a South Bend police officer during an arrest that left Stevens hospitalized last week.

Stevens, 55, was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and battery to a police officer late on the night of March 25 after the officer stopped him for a traffic violation in the 1500 block of Sunnymede Avenue, just east of Twyckenham Drive.

Attorney Jeff Kimmell, who is representing Stevens and his mother, Suzanne Stevens, said he could not discuss details about what led to the altercation, but he said his client never struck the officer, Aaron Knepper.

"He never struck the police officer at all during this entire altercation, but he himself was struck repeatedly," Kimmell said this afternoon.

Suzanne Stevens, 76, who also was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and battery to an officer, has said Knepper beat her son excessively, punching him in the jaw, neck, chest and ribs.

Police, however, have cautioned against jumping to conclusions about Knepper's actions and said all the facts will come to light when an investigation into the incident is finished.

"Once the officer's version of the story is made known, it will be a lot clearer what happened," police Capt. Phil Trent said last week.

Knepper was accused of misconduct in two previous cases, including an August 2012 incident in which a local 7-Eleven clerk said Knepper and two other officers challenged him to swallow a tablespoon of cinnamon and videotaped the stunt, sometimes known as the "cinnamon challenge."

Then-police chief Chuck Hurley suspended Knepper without pay for two days. Knepper had stopped in the store to meet other officers for coffee when they challenged the employee to perform the cinnamon stunt, according to personnel records obtained by The Tribune through a public records request. The officers then challenged him to eat 10 crackers in one minute, which he started to do but did not finish, records show.

Knepper apologized for taking part in the stunt.

"I would like to apologize for my actions," Knepper wrote in a report to Hurley. "I never intended to act unprofessionally or attract any unwanted media attention to the department."

Knepper and two other officers -- Eric Mentz and Michael Stuk -- were named in a lawsuit in which the clerk claimed they humiliated him and violated his civil rights.

The same three officers were also named in a lawsuit by a family who claimed the officers burst into their home without a warrant and beat DeSawn Franklin, then 17, and falsely arrested him. Both lawsuits are still pending.

The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit is investigating the Stevens case, which is the standard procedure when a person is seriously injured during an arrest or while in police custody. Prosecutors have not filed charges against Stevens or his mother, saying they are awaiting the results of the investigation.

Stevens has been released from the hospital and is staying with a friend, his family said.

Stevens has spoken openly in the past about his struggles with cocaine addiciton, which resulted in jail stints after convictions in 2001 and 2006.

So this would be this cops's 4th accusation of police brutality?

I'm sure it's all a coincidence.

My two cents - sounds like excessive force. It's a freaking bar brawl, if the cops can't defuse this without their Taser then there should be corroborating witness reports of some wild drunken antics. This guy sounds like a piece of work who can't stop once he starts. All PDs have a few of these Johnny Machos running around and that is exactly how the body of "evidence" looks to me at this point. Four cops on the scene working to detain one man - and they light him up with the Taser. F that.

That GF sounds like a piece of work though.

^clown show. Like we've been saying for a week, you cannot trust jack shit about that cop's account. Breaking into houses without a warrant and tasering the wrong guy... beating a guy into a coma and filing a battery charge against him... abusing vulnerable minorities for his entertainment... how does he have a job?

Hope Butler goes to trial and sues.

Exactly. This cop sounds like a goddamn psychopath.

As funny as I find the 7-11 incident - it also makes the guy look like a juvenile prick. Probably had McLovin in the back of his cop car.

Like we've been saying for awhile... the cops story just doesn't even pass the sniff test:

-They say everyone left the scene and that's why they didn't collect statements or do their job. This is an obvious lie, and it's not even debatable.

-Says he "ripped the belt off" someone... how does one even do that? They all buckle or clip.

-Picked him up and threw him... on a broken foot.

There are dozens of eye witnesses that will all testify to roughly the order of events that was described in the SBT article. I've yet to hear a single one back up what the liar cop put in his police report.

The truth of this story is somewhere in the middle of Bell's account of what happened and the cops.

Looks a lot like McLovin himself! Maybe a cross b/w McLovin and Farva from Super Troopers.

Sounds like that might be a pretty accurate description of this guy:

Right, but it seems a lot closer to Bell's than the cop's. What's left out of Bell's is all the other nonsense that was going on, and the situation being much more aggravated than she described.

Normally, I think of you as a really smart guy.

So, who said Devin admitted that he was drunk? Who said Devin admitted to being emotional?

Nope. Not Devin. I will give you a hint, the initials AN, and company.

Devin Butler never made a mirandized statement about anything.

Now, please show me what Devin blew that night. It is legal to drink, as there is no driving involved. But I want to see how pussy cops explain their way out of getting their ass kicked by a drunken one legged man!

They better watch their stories, it may add to the inconsistencies their narrative provides as ND2 pointed out, that Kneppers injuries don't match his sworn affidavit of where Butler struck him.

I know, I know, Knepper isn't a racist, he just likes to share cinnamon with people at 7-11's!

Walked out of court in a walking boot......

Takes a brave man to wear a walking boot to the Backer. The thing would get so nasty on that floor. Stray Long Islands sloshing around inside. Yuck.

I might have missed the facetious intent of the Lion, but I never would call all cops pussies.

If I did call all cops pussies, you would know it because I would have said something like "all cops are pussies," which I didn't. And if I did, you would also see me get the shit kicked out of me by several family members, and a couple of buddies, oh yeah, and a neighbor.

But I did clearly go on record saying that all of the cops involved in this incident were pussies. And especially if the witnesses are corroborated, you can add that Chief of Police, and the prosecutor to the list.

If this is the fourth occurrence of this officer violating a citizens civil rights, (ostensibly), and command and the prosecutor backed his line of subterfuge without ample investigation, they are all actually worse than that.

And if it is true that Knepper screwed up, they all deserve to go to jail, if they chose to prosecute an innocent man, to cover up a screw-ups lie.

I disagree. The DA only goes by what evidence is presented to him. He wasn't there. And the Chief wasn't there either, and has zero reasons to believe kids over his officers in a bar fight situation.

I'm assuming both will re-examine the evidence if new stuff presents itself.

Also, we don't know what the other officer is saying. And we also have no idea if Butler's girlfriend is being truthful. She has her own bias.

I understand calling the Knepper cop a pussy.

This is why I'm not a big fan of her, or Hunter's fiance, doing interviews. Them talking doesn't help the situation.
