Wiltfong made this comment today It's time for Max Redfield to be coachable, stop acting like he knows everything and play sound football. ...i was surprised i must say for him to come right out with this as he is usually not so forward...makes some sense now why he has been what he has been...ben koyack potential

What's Wiltfong's background before becoming a Talking Head? Anyone know?

Never been so excited to land a player to only to be disappointed. Might not be a more talented player on this team. Blows my mind he hasn't put it all together and should have been a 1st rounder this year. Most athletic safety ND has had since I'll been alive.

I still remember his almost INT against Stanford a few years ago and was like did he really almost make that play?

has always been...worked as a beat writer for tribune, then irish sports daily and then current

I was talking about before the SBT, I remember him there late 90's maybe, into the 00's. I was more wondering where he's from, what school did he attend, was he a football player or even an athlete of any kind beforehand. I'll ask Google.

False. You were alive when Jeff Burris wore the gold helmets.

Which game? I'm curious to find that play, don't remember it at all.

Golson to Koyack game? The year before?

It was the Koyack game, it was on a pass break up where he basically did a front flip. It's gif somewhere in this thread but couldn't find it online.

He can be in right place 24/7, if he doesn't have the heart to tackle like a real football player it doesn't matter.

Is Redfield more athletic than Zibby or Harrison? Or Bruton? They were all pretty damn athletic. I know Redfield was ranked high but athletically, I'd think the three I mentioned would at least be on the same level if not a step ahead since they actually play(ed) in the NFL.

I agree. Harrison and Zibby were both very good recruits coming out of high school. I don't think either were 5 stars like Redfield, but I remember ESPN following Zibby and he did a recruiting diary during that time. Zibby probably could have played QB too, at least at Navy which is where he almost wound up. 2 punt returns for TDs, and 4 of his 8 INTs were pick 6s. He was deceptively fast, and tough to bring down. Harrison certainly is no slouch either. He didn't benefit much under Weis, but he certainly made the most of his time at the end and parlayed that into a pretty successful NFL career so far.

Just saw a recent piece on Zibby:

I agree. I haven't seen much from Redfield that makes me think he's so incredibly athletic. Which is kind of scary given his struggles mentally.

Biggest bust of the Kelly era after Ishaq Williams.

From a football perspective it's really starting to look like it. He's at least in the conversation. Wish it weren't true but this certainly doesn't help.

Seems like we see a good share of talented players struggle early in their career, and very rarely some of these big talents that struggle will have a Jonas Gray breakout moment Senior year. Seems like more often than not the ones that don't have the right mindset from the beginning find it's hard to change though.

The funny thing about Max: He didn't really struggle that much early in his career. I mean, he didn't come in and blow the place up, but he contributed as a freshman. Also never been any sign of academic trouble with him (if anything he prioritized academic pursuits over mastery of the playbook), or the sort of cultural adjustment struggles that some of our other five-star flameouts have had. He could be a poster boy for the program, if only he had his head on straight.

As for his future with the team: I guess it depends on what, exactly, his role was here (If the gun was his, that's a problem. If he was just in the car, it would seem like a two-game suspension might be more in order). And on what his teammates feel about him. I know he's not popular on the message boards, but less clear on how he's thought of within the program. He may be a leader in ways we don't see. Or not.

I might be overacting, but I think at best Max gets a minor suspension then spends the rest of his career in Kelly's doghouse; never seeing the field again. In the practical sense, he's done on the field.

Oh, I think if he's on the team, he'll see the field. He's too talented and safety depth too light for him not to. Also, word from the staff is the light has come on lately. Which makes this whole episode even more stupid. Guy could have played his way into a solid draft pick. Now he'll be a red flag for sure.

Yeah but the word from some of the staff, and a whole bunch of other sources, reporters, and individuals that have been at practices, is that he has slacked off quite a bit over the last week or so.
