Just for discussion purposes:if the following were true, assumption being that Wimbush was really good, then might not this be part of why Johnson could be sold off of ND by Butch Jones? { for purposes of the discussion, it wouldn't make any difference if I have Wimbush and Kizer reversed}

2015: Zaire//Kizer//Wimbush-redshirt
2016: Zaire//Wimbush//Kizer//Book-redshirt
2017: Wimbush//Kizer//Book// ghost-of-Johnson-redshirt
2018: Wimbush//Book// whomever
2019: Wimbush-5th year//Book// whomever

If the discussion theory above was sort-of true, then Johnson could be told that he wouldn't see the field till he was a junior in 2020 even if he hopped Book. I'd also think that Kelly/Sanford would see this recruiting problem with Johnson as well, and our abnormal honesty with recruits [refusing to promise them things] might have been unable to make headway here. I also bet that we have several back-up plans in the war room.

More ominous to me is that if the above was sort-of true, we REALLY need to have Wimbush take a redshirt this season, stay healthy, and play all his eligibility. If any of those things would not happen, then the "drafting" of a REALLY good prospect both 2017 and 2018 becomes critical.

This is not a good look for BK and ND. Let's rehash for a moment......

- This is the second time in the last few cycles that ND has gone hard and put all of their eggs into a Junior To Be QB, both thought to be the #1 QB. Both times, ND seemed to be in the drivers seat only to watch the target commit elsewhere.vLast time, ND was able to get BW away from PSU, which seems like a tit-for-tat trade for MH, perhaps even better. We shall see. However, this time, ND has already received a commitment from a 3* QB that had less than stellar offers. Will ND continue to work on 2016 QB's?

- This is the second year in a row ND looked like they had the makings of a fantastic class two years out from signing day. Both years, the #1 QB was to be the crown jewel of the class, but there were many other very highly ranked individuals "high" on ND. The 2016 class has, to this point, fizzled compared to those visions (didn't Wilfong pen an article saying how ND could land the #1 class in 2016 about this time last year?). The 2016 class wasn't helped by the performance late last year. So far, we have a great foundation to the 2017 class, but losing out on HJ right now is a major blow from a perception standpoint.

- This makes the 2015 season even more important, perhaps the most important season for BK and his Irish legacy. To be able to recruit at a very high level for the rest of 2016 and the entire 2017 class, I think BK needs 10 wins at a minimum. If that doesn't happen, I think it will be hard to sell the upside of the program when the national perception of MSU, OSU and perhaps even UM with JH would make ND the 4th player in the MW. Tough sledding if you don't have a good year in 2015.

- Finally......Elston looks a bit foolish right now after going out and telling people within the last month or so that ND was going to land the #1 QB for 2017. I think he really believed that, and this is far from over, but you don't make comments like that unless you are certain.

I understand where you are coming from but at the same time we got Wimbush. A very good option. I do agree that it can look bad but we have plenty of time to get another option for 17 or possibly a top guy if available in 16. I am much more concerned about DE then i am QB.

folks have to remember we have had 3 QB coaches in 3 years

This... It is very hard to sign legit Qb's if they don't know who is going to coach them year to year.... I think now that Sanford is here, things will change and wouldn't be surprised us landing a good qb in 2017, and be in on an elite qb in 2018

Signing day for him is over a year and a half away, a lot could happen. I'm more concerned about d-line recruiting for 2016 right now.

Good post OMM.
My only issue is when has our QB succession chart ever went smooth?

not getting the Quantum leap reference

Just the idea that the first QB getting some mention is a 3* with some average offers. Kid could turn out to be Andrew Luck for all we know, but the first impression could draw some negative reactions from those concerned with QB recruiting. Like Sam, Oh Boy is how things starts, but they usually end up okay in the end.

Ok, but who is Sam, who is Al, and who is Gushi?

A couple of things.

1. No need to freak out. It's 2017, not 2016. 2017 is a deep class for quarterbacks and there are a ton of Qb's that fit Notre Dame's system.

2. Keytaon Thompson does not hold an Notre Dame offer as of this post.

3. I talked to a source close to Clifford and they were doubtful he would flip to any school at this stage.

4. Ian Book didnt have any impact on the decision. Sanford and ND were forward with Johnson as far as taking a 2016 commitment for this exact reason.

5. ND was almost forced into recruiting Johnson, while there are some better quarterbacks out there. Not saying Johnson isn't good, because he is, but there are better QB's across the country that are more advanced and project a higher ceiling. It might be a blessing in disguise if ND lands one of them.

6. CalVegas- I dont agree on your statement of "if he stats don't improve it won't be a big loss". His stats werent good last. A lot of factors go into stats. How good is his OL? How good are his WRs? How good in the run game to help open the pass? I mean, there are a ton of QB's in the high school level who dont have good stats, heck a lot of high school players dont have good stats, yet blow up in college when they get around good players. As most know, I haven't been high on Johnson in terms of him being the #1 QB in the class, but he has the tools to be a vey successful college QB regardless of stats.

I think it's a mistake to assume Malik won't be the QB through 2017. He may stay all 5 years. He might just be a great college QB like Tahj Boyd, stay all 5 years and still only be a late round pick.

Honestly never cared for his haircut, he seemed like too much of a golden boy for it to be true. Let's get a DT QB that's at least 6'2" and we'll be fine.

It seems you've learned your lessons since proclaiming Blake Barnett a "Notre Dame Man."

I think it will be tough getting him out of La.

Still plenty of QBs out there to get in the mix for. Hope you guys find the one that fits your needs.

Not sure what you categorize as very good? I'd say better than last year but probably not very good. My benchmark for a very good season is 10+ wins and a competitive bowl game. I think they'll be around the 8-9 win mark. So I'd call it good.

He must of been playing good before I turned it on because he is not looking good now. Two turnovers and a number of bad passes. Game is obviously getting out of hand now so he may not be 100% in it now, but still.
